Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With more than 130 illustrations, The Photographed Cat: Picturing Close Human-Feline Ties, 1900–1940 is both an archive and an analytical exploration of the close relationships between Americans and their cats during a period that is significant for photography and for modern understandings of animals as pets. This volume examines the cultural implications of feline companions while also celebrating the intimacy and joys of pets and family photographs. In seven thematic sections, Arluke and Rolfe engage with the collection of antique images as representations of real relationships and of ideal relationships, noting the cultural trends and tropes that occur throughout this increasingly popular practice. Whether as surrogate children, mascots, or companions to women, cats are part of modern American life and visual culture. Entertaining, smart, and filled with a collector’s trove of wonderful images, The Photographed Cat pays homage to the surprising range of relationships we have with cats and offers thoughtful consideration of the ways in which we represent them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All for the Love of Cats is a collection of stories, poems and interesting facts about America’s most popular pet the house cat. It was written in the 87th year of my life. I am a retired person who never really retired. My life began in April of the year 1935. A time when America suffered from a great depression. I was born in Mount Vernon, New York into a family that was poor. My mother and father married very soon after graduating from high school with no skills to qualify them for good jobs. So, my farther made a merger salary and my mother stayed home with me. His jobs came and went. Before I was five, we moved from Mount Vernon to Cos Cob Connecticut to Riverside, to Roatan, to Old Greenwich. I spent the war years there and at my age ten we moved to a small town in upstate New York named Sempronius where we ran a chicken farm. It was there that I met my first cat and I have loved cats ever since. I left there in 1953, tried a semester of college, flunked out and joined the Navy in Key West, Florida and I didn’t have contact with another cat until I married my wife Kay in 1962 and we bought a copper-eyed Persian cat named Buzzy. Buzzy lived with us for nineteen years and after he died, we didn’t have another cat until the nineteen eighties when a white short-hair cat named Marco Polo came to our summer home in Cashiers, North Carolina. Marco soon had a small Maine Coon female for a friend and soon the stray started coming to our door and by the time we retired in 1993 we had anywhere from six to ten cats sharing our home. But it wasn’t until 1995 when we moved from Clearwater, Florida to Cashiers, North Carolina and found that that town and all the other towns around us had a serious problem with stray and abandoned cats and we began helping to save as many of them as we could and any other plans we had for our retirement were gone with the wind and we spent all of our years of retirement operating a no-kill shelter and adoption center and we worked harder than I did a college professor and Kay as a school social worker harder than we had ever worked before. When you operate a cat shelter you don’t work nine to five, you work seven-twenty-four- three sixty-five because cats work those same hours and they may need assistance at any time of the day or night. This book tells the story of our life since we though we retired in 1993. All the stories are true, I wrote the poems and put together the facts about cats and how they became pets and companions that enriched our lives. The idea for a cat museum had been in our minds since we learned that there were none in America and we began buying items for a museum. But it wasn’t until 2017 that we were able to open a small cat museum in one room of a local antique mall and we learned that cat people did, indeed, want to visit a cat museum and people from all over the world have come to visit. I hope I live forever, but my wife died at age 87 so it is unlikely I will live forever and when I do I hope all the people who love cats will come together and help the museum live on after me with donations to the cause. Information of how you can help can be found on the last few pages on this book. Please buy a copy, learn more about your cats and help the museum to live on into the future to educate and entertain cat lovers in the near and far future.

This is a book for everyone who really cares about cats. Vividly written, sometimes serious, sometimes light-hearted, anyone who has fallen for a cat, however much against their better judgement, is bound to find it uplifting. While cat people are nice (Hitler couldn't stand them!), the real heroes in this book are naturally the cats themselves. A rich portfolio of feline characters - including the author's own cats - step off the page, or perhaps lie curled in seductive curves on it, so vividly that you can feel their fur and hear their purr! Rich in entertaining anecdotes and asides, For the Love of a Cat will enhance every cat owner's understanding of their feline friend and remind them again and again just how lucky they are to share their lives with this most fascinating of creatures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luddy, short for Ludwig van Beethoven, is a pure white, blue-eyed cat. And like his famous namesake, he is deaf. Aimed at children in grades three to six, Luddy teaches kids that his deafness is genetic. He tells about his adventures with his adopted family, takes us with him on a Stay-cation, and introduces his foster-brother, Billy Bingo, a cat with problems to whom Luddy gives unconditional love. Finally, Luddy introduces us to some very good friends who are special needs animals. Kids can learn a lot from Luddy! This is the author’s first children’s book and the first of a series. In subsequent books, Luddy talks about cursive writing, Braille and ASL, plus teaches a little Latin. (A dead language? Luddy doesn't think so.) Luddy loves to travel, and you may find Luddy has visited the city where you live.

This book was released on 2008-03-19 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christiane Brems, an experienced clinician, supervisor, and educator, presents a metatheoretical yet practical guide to working with children ages 3 to 12 years. She draws heavily on developmental, interpersonal, family systems, and self-psychological schools of thought and integrates the core components of all of these approaches in a clear and concise manner. She stresses the need for intensive assessment to precede conceptualization and treatment planning so that treatment techniques are dictated by the needs of each child and family. Brems has contoured the third edition to meet the practical needs and expectations of students and practitioners. Divided among four sections, the chapters follow the logical development of clinicians, mirroring the natural flow of work with childrenfrom the practitioners self-exploration, to learning about special aspects of children (such as diversity and development), to awareness about the special needs and demands of children as related to environmental, legal, and ethical issues. Brems prepares clinicians to discover their own personal traits that may facilitate or hinder their work with children. She walks child therapists and counselors through the initial stages of intake, assessment, and conceptualization. The material on assessment instruments is thoroughly updated; discussions refer to the latest versions of instruments, and if new instruments emerged that meet one of the purposes deemed essential to child treatment, they are included. The text contains case examples, each illustrating a specific therapeutic technique.

This is the first volume in a trilogy describing in particular the S.M.A.R.T. Circle project, which was founded in Edmonton, Canada in 1981. The acronym S.M.A.R.T. stands for Saturday Mathematical Activities, Recreations & Tutorials. This book, Volume I, offers a sampling of many aspects, including projects and mini-courses. Volume II, which consists of student projects, addresses the purpose of the Circle, and Volume III, consisting of mini-courses, explains what actually takes place in the Circle. All three volumes provide a wealth of resources (mathematical problems, quizzes and games, together with their solutions). The books will be of interest to self-motivated students who want to conduct independent research, teachers who work with these students, and teachers who are currently running or planning to run Mathematical Circles of their own.

Book excerpt: Quickly acquire the knowledge and skills you need to confidently administer, score, and interpret a variety of storytelling techniques Storytelling techniques are a popular projective approach for assessing many aspects of a person's personality, such as cognitive processes, emotional functioning, and self-regulation. The broad spectrum of techniques includes the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT—the most widely embraced), Roberts-2, and TEMAS (Tell-Me-A-Story). To use these tests properly, professionals need an authoritative source of advice and guidance on how to administer, score, and interpret them. Written by Hedwig Teglasi, a leading researcher of the TAT and other storytelling techniques, Essentials of TAT and Other Storytelling Assessments, Second Edition is that source. Like all the volumes in the Essentials of Psychological Assessment series, this book is designed to help busy mental health professionals, and those in training, quickly acquire the knowledge and skills they need to make optimal use of major psychological assessment instruments. Each concise chapter features numerous callout boxes highlighting key concepts, bulleted points, and extensive illustrative material, as well as test questions that help you gauge and reinforce your grasp of the information covered. Fully revised and updated to reflect the current research supporting storytelling techniques, Essentials of TAT and Other Storytelling Assessments, Second Edition reflects the latest data and theory on scoring stories and includes new material on interpreting stories in reference to a person's abilities in cognition, emotion, relationships, motivation, and self-regulation. As well, the author provides expert assessment of the methods' relative strengths and weaknesses, valuable advice on their clinical applications, and several case studies to illustrate best practices for implementing the storytelling approach to personality assessment.
