Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to assist ophthalmologists in providing the best possible care for children with congenital cataracts. The entire patient pathway is covered, from preoperative assessment through application of the various surgical techniques to postoperative care and management of complications. Among the topics discussed are new developments in molecular genetics relevant to patient evaluation, intraocular lens power formulas, and the findings of the Infant Aphakia Treatment Study. The surgical section describes anterior capsulotomy, lensectomy, selection of intraocular lens (IOL) power, IOL implantation in the capsular bag, posterior capsulotomy techniques, the use of secondary IOLs and iris-fixated IOLs in children, and surgical management in developing countries. Visual outcomes after surgery are also fully addressed, with chapters on the occurrence of strabismus, nystagmus, and poor stereopsis.

Book excerpt: Numerous drugs administered either generally or locally have shown a cata ractogenic action. From a pathogenic point of view a di, stinction must be made between drugs which modify the transparency of the lens due to accumulation (mer curic, 'silver, gold salts, etc.) from those influencing its metabolism. Among the latter, Triparanol, antimitotic drugs, various phenothiazinic derivates, corticosteroids and certain miotics cause the most significatn dam age. It is necessary to indicate the most frequent reports which evidence a relationship between a prolonged oestroprogestinic therapy and alterations of the lens transparency. The authors also indicate pathogenic mechanisms which probably cause iatrogenic cataracts. REFERENCES Apponi G., Rinaldi E. & De Simone S. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses why specific diseases are being targeted for cell-based retinal therapy, what evidence exists that justifies optimism for this approach, and what challenges must be managed in order to bring this technology from the laboratory into routine clinical practice. There are a number of unanswered questions (e.g., surgical approach to cell delivery, management of immune response, optimum cell type to transplant) that very likely are not going to be answered until human trials are undertaken, but there is a certain amount of “de-risking” that can be done with preclinical experimentation. This book is essential reading for scientists, clinicians, and advanced students in stem cell research, cell biology, and ophthalmology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed for the neurologist who (in this day of unusually strict accountability) needs to have at hand an authoritative guide to the diagnostic criteria for all conditions that he or she may be faced with in clinical practice. While originally conceived as a compendium of diagnostic criteria, the author has felt the need to expand the work to include definitions of practically all terms that are used in neurology today. Historical elements are also provided--including entries of important neurologists and neurosurgeons who have impacted the field. The result is an effective representation of the tools of the trade for the neurologist in training and a concise and precise source for the practicing neurologist. The second edition was published in 2003. Since then, advances in the definition of many neurological conditions have been made, all of which have been incorporated in the third edition. There has also been a fine tuning of the definitions and diagnostic criteria of many other conditions. The author has collated over 1300 articles since the last edition in order to update many of the entries. As such, the entries will have the most up-to-date definition of diseases, symptoms, diagnostic tests, and pearls of wisdom. The third edition remains an invaluable guide to the spectrum of neurological practice and with nearly 7,000 references this truly is the bible of neurological terms and conditions.
