Book excerpt: The objective of this thesis, which was to develop a high activity catalyst with 95% selectivity to acrolein at 350oC, was successfully achieved by Mo12Bi1.5Fe0.8Co3.5W0.6K0.04Si1.4P0.7Ox catalyst. The screening tests even when using propylene feed-stocks straight from the refinery by-product without prior purification have proven the consistency in catalytic performance, thereby confirming the reliability of the preparation technique. In trying to make the catalyst more robust, it was physically modified to spheres and pellets and was used successfully in a fixed bed reactor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reduction-reoxidation of bismuth molybdate is controlled by the diffusion of oxygen ions in the lattice, because the reduction sites do not have to be adjacent to the oxidation sites. The oxygen diffusion rate is in turn controlled by how mobile the lattice oxygen ions are. Hence, the mobile oxygen ions discussed earlier control the catalyst activity in catalysing the reaction of propylene partial oxidation. The examination of several reaction mechanism models has given further evidence that the propylene partial oxidation to acrolein occurs via the redox mechanism. In this mechanism, the rate of acrolein formation depends on the degree of fully oxidised sites in the bismuth molybdate. The oxidised sites affect the apparent reaction orders in propylene and oxygen and thus control the kinetics of partial oxidation of propylene to acrolein. The more easily the reduced catalysts are reoxidised, the more active the catalysts in converting propylene to acrolein. A set of reaction steps has been proposed, which adequately reassembles the reaction mechanism. Side product reactions are also identified and included in the mechanisms. The present thesis has revealed a much detailed insight into the role of lattice oxygen in the catalytic partial oxidation of propylene to acrolein over bismuth molybdates and established the relationship between structure and activity and selectivity of the catalyst. This work has laid a foundation for future catalyst design to be based on structural knowledge of the catalysts.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acrolein, which has wide industrial applications, can be produced by catalytic partial oxidation of propylene. The Centre for Fuels and Energy has been undertaking an R&D program to develop an Australian technology to produce acrolein. The overall aim of this work is to develop computerised models to satisfactorily describe the kinetics of the propylene catalytic oxidation and the whole acrolein production process. For this purpose, the commercial software, ASPEN Plus\U+2122\, has been employed in the present study. Two kinetic models using ASPEN Plus, Models A and B, have been developed to compute the production rates of acrolein and other by-products during propylene partial oxidation over both (Mo-Pr-Bi) and (Bi-Mo) catalysts, respectively, based on the kinetics reported in the literature. Both models successfully describe the propylene oxidation reactions supported by a good agreement between the simulation results and experimental data. Model A suggests that the reaction scheme of catalytic oxidation of propylene over the (Mo-Pr-Bi) catalyst consists of six reactions, namely, the formation of acrolein, acetaldehyde, acetone and carbon dioxide from parallel oxidation of propylene, and secondary oxidation of acrolein and acetaldehyde to carbon dioxide. Model B, developed for the (Bi-Mo) catalyst, shows that the reaction scheme only includes three parallel propylene oxidation reactions with acrolein, acetaldehyde and carbon dioxide being the products. By analysing the predicted reaction schemes and the selectivities of various products, two mechanisms of the propylene catalytic oxidation reaction are hypothesised for the two catalysts, respectively, further revealing the different performances of the corresponding catalysts.

Book excerpt: Bismuth (Bi) is a post-transition metal element with the atomic number of 83, which belongs to the pnictogen group elements in Period 6 in the elemental periodic table. As a heavy metal, the hazard of Bi is unusually low in contrast to its neighbors Pb and Sb. This property, along with other typical characteristics like strong diamagnetism and low thermal conductivity, makes Bi attractive in industrial applications. There are more than 100 commercial bismuth products, from pharmaceutical to industrial catalysts. Based on the wide applications of Bi materials, this book goes further and mainly focuses on the potential uses of Bi-based materials, which consist of nine chapters. In addition, a special chapter concerning the defect in bismuth is also presented.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The selective oxidation of propylene to acrolein was found to exhibit the following reaction kinetics r = k[C3H6]1 [O2]1/2[*]02, in which [*]0 represents the total number of catalytic surface VO4 active sites/g of catalyst and k is an apparent rate constant that is a function of krds and Kads. The second order dependence on [*]0 suggests that two surface VO4 sites are involved in the rds of propylene oxidation. Although the reaction rate increases as [*]02 with surface vanadia coverage, the most pronounced effect on the reaction kinetics was observed by changing the specific oxide support (ZrO2 & sim; TiO2> Nb2O 5> Al2O3> SiO2). This almost 10 2 variation in Turnover Frequency (TOF) is related to the electron density on the bridging V-O-Support bond that is controlled by the electronegativity of the support cation. Consequently, the lower the support cation electronegativity, the greater the residual electron density on the bridging V-O-support bond for accelerating the redox kinetics.
