Book excerpt: The main sources of NOx are diesel engines, automotives, electric utilities, other industrial, commercial, and residential sources that burn fuels at high temperature. The control and abatement of NOx emissions are important because of their harmful effects on the human body and the environment. The strict regulations of NOx emissions and the growing demand for power compel new design of catalytic materials for pollution removal. The most common method for car exhaust NOx treatment involves wet impregnation of noble metals on ceramic substrates. In this work, catalytic nanoparticles doped on nanofiber enhanced ceramic fibrous filter medium structure are developed as an alternative method. The noble metals, palladium, platinum and rhodium doped ceramic nanofibers, are synthesized using electrospinning and are incorporated into the micro-fibrous filter. We have discovered ceramic nanofiber containing noble metals also work in liquid phase catalysis by converting styrene to ethylbenzene at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The reaction temperature is varied and the filters are tested for decomposition of nitric oxide and carbon monoxide using nanofiber based fibrous filter. Carbon dioxide, nitrogen and nitrous oxide gases were produced. Produced nitrous oxide gas was consumed by reacting with carbon monoxide. The efficiency of the catalytic fibrous filter was similar to commercial catalytic converter by adding of smaller amount of catalyst doped on alumina microfibers. As the amount of catalyst in the fibrous filter media increases the temperature at which all NO disappears decreases. As the inlet concentration of NO gas decreases, all NO disappears from the outlet at a lower temperature. As the face velocity through the fibrous filter media increases, efficiency becomes lower as the residence time of gases through the media decreases. We also tested a catalytic fibrous filter media containing Pd, Pt and Rh, and the performance is similar to that of catalytic convertor. Analytical models are developed to study the performance of filters for isothermal nitric oxide and carbon monoxide gas reaction. The kinetic parameters for the model were determined using the Genetic Algorithm (GA) computer program to determine species concentrations as a function of position. Model and experimental results showed that the decomposition temperature of nitric oxide gas decreases by lowering the inlet gas concentration and increasing of catalyst concentration in the nanofibers. Also a non-isothermal model was developed for direct nitric oxide decomposition to predict temperature and concentration profiles along the filter length.

Book excerpt: Nitrogen Oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO) are major pollutants in the exhaust streams of automobiles, power plants, and other combustion processes. The growing concerns for the environment have resulted in increasingly restrictive emission standards. The removal of NO and CO from exhaust gases is a challenging task. One method for harmful gas removal is using a catalyst for dissociation. This work explored an alternative method for catalytic reduction of NO. Polymer solutions with palladium catalyst and ceramic precursors were electrospun to form polymer nanofibers. These nanofibers were heated to form ceramic nanofibers with catalyst nanoparticles and were mixed with microfibers to form a nonwoven fibrous catalyst support structure. The concentration of the polymer was varied to create nanofibers with diameters ranging from 100 to 700 nm with a constant mass of catalyst particles per mass of fiber. The effect of the fiber diameter on the corresponding catalyst structure performance was tested. A surface area comparison test was completed to determine whether the reactions occur strictly on the surface of the catalyst or if diffusion occurs. An aging comparison was also completed which tested 1 week old catalytic filters compared to 6 months old. A conventional catalytic converter was tested to verify the performance was similar to the catalytic fibrous filter media containing only palladium. Experiments were carried out using a lab reactor to expose the media to a mixture of gases simulating an exhaust stream at room temperature to a maximum of 450°C. The reactor exhaust concentrations are measured using gas chromatography (GC) to determine the catalyst performance. Results indicated that the catalytic reaction performance was about the same for fiber sizes ranging from 100 to 700 nm on a mass basis with a reduction temperature of 325-350°C. The surface area comparison filter reduced at 275°C which showed that both surface catalyst particles and particles within the fibers are available for reaction. Furthermore, a conventional catalytic converter reduced at approximately 325°C which exhibits comparable catalytic performance with the catalytic filters. Model theory and equations were also developed for decomposition reactions of NO and CO using elementary reactions.

Book excerpt: NOx and CO are two most hazardous gases among the exhaust gases stream from automotive vehicles, power plants, coal and mine industries, reactors, smelters etc. These gases cause severe damage to vegetation, plant and aquatic life by photochemical reaction resulting smog and acid rain. Particulate matter less than 2:5[micrometers] is another substance to be removed from these sources. Serious health hazards are also likely to happen such as cardiovascular and respiratory problem even at the lower concentration of these noxious gases. Conventional method of eradicating NOx and CO is catalytic converter with ceramic substrate which is wash-coated by noble metal. Platinum, Palladium and Rhodium are three common active catalyst impregnated in Al2O3 based substrate although being expensive. According to US EPA total NOx emission in the world per year is 165 million tons of which 70-80% comes from automotive vehicles. To meet the requirement of EPA and preventing air pollution, highly cost effective and reliable functional material is in need. Ceramic nanofiber is a unique substitute as it is thermally stable, light weight and has high aspect ratio of diameter to volume compared to traditional one. In this work, Pd incorporated TiO2 ceramic nanofiber has been fabricated through electrospinning process followed by calcination at 600°C. Catalytic nanofiber was characterized using SEM, TEM, BET, XRD, XEDS to analyze fiber diameter, morphology, specific surface area, crystallization phase of TiO2 and PdO, atomic percentage of elements in fiber respectively. 0:5%, 1:7% and 2:7% Pd on TiO2 surface were loaded during electrospinning process. Proper optimization of electrospinning process parameters was done and elimination of beads on fiber was ensured observing the solution properties such as viscosity, surface tension and electrical conductivity with change of polymeric concentration. Among 8%, 10%, 12% and 13% PVP (W/W), 12% PVP offered beadless catalytic fiber for three different catalyst loading. Average fiber diameter is 180-280nm. Catalytic nanofiber was incorporated into a micro fibrous media and placed inside a reactor to see the NO ad CO conversion at different temperature from 25°C, 100°C, 200°C, 250°C, 300°C, 350°C, 400°C and 450°C. 2:7% Pd loaded catalytic filter showed complete conversion of gases at 300°C. As the amount of catalyst loading increased, the decomposition temperature decreased. Filter media was also tested in a TSI automated filter tester to see NaCl aerosol particle loading efficiency and then retested in the reactor to observe its effect on reactivity. A moderate change in decomposition temperature was observed after loading. TiO2 and PdO/TiO2 nanofiber was calcined at different temperature such as 200°C, 300°C, 400°C, 500°C and 600°C to find out anatase phase content and filter media was prepared out of these samples. To test the Photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanofiber based filter media UV light was irradiated on the filter surface but no significant reaction was seen.

Book excerpt: For environmental protection, the suppression of automotive exhausts such as nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide is very important. These gases are potential health hazards and green house gases. Hence this concern triggered the need for stringent environmental regulations which resulted in the introduction of catalytic devices in automobiles. In this book, a novel approach has been developed wherein the noble metal nanocatalysts have been incorporated on ceramic nanofibers by the electrospinning process. The catalysts on ceramic nanofibers increase the overall exposed catalyst area and simultaneously immobilize the catalyst to minimize catalyst loss. A small amount of the catalyst incorporated into ceramic nanofibers was mixed with microfibers to fabricate a filter disk by vacuum molding. This filter disk termed as 'catalytic filter'is a combination of catalytic elements and filter. The catalyzed ceramic nanofiber augmented microfiber filter media can be used for two applications: reduction of NOx and oxidation of CO and for enhanced particulate removal.

Book excerpt: For environmental protection, the suppression of automotive exhausts such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon monoxide (CO) is very important. These gases are potential health hazards and green house gases. Burning of hydrocarbon (HC) ideally leads to the formation of water and carbon dioxide; however, due to incomplete combustion and temperatures fluctuations reached in the combustion chamber, the exhaust contains significant amounts of pollutants which need to be transformed into harmless compounds. Hence this concern triggered the need for stringent environmental regulations which resulted in the introduction of catalytic devices in automobiles. Traditionally, the catalyst is impregnated onto a porous substrate. The limitation of this method is the difficulty involved in controlling the catalyst particle size during the sintering or reduction steps that result in high temperature agglomeration effects. In the present work, a novel approach has been developed wherein the noble metal nanocatalysts have been incorporated on ceramic nanofibers by the electrospinning process. The catalysts on ceramic nanofibers increase the overall exposed catalyst area and simultaneously immobilize the catalyst to minimize catalyst loss. A small amount of the catalyst incorporated into ceramic nanofibers was mixed with microfibers to fabricate a filter disk by vacuum molding technique. This filter disk termed as 'catalytic filter' is a combination of catalytic elements and filter. The catalyzed ceramic nanofiber augmented microfiber filter media can be used for two applications: reduction of NOx and oxidation of CO and for enhanced particulate removal. This filter would include advantages such as light weight structure, optimization of precious metals, high capture efficiency, high surface area, highly interconnected network of pores and high permeability. The key aspects in this dissertation can be divided into six parts: fabrication of catalytic filters and their optimization, fabrication of three-way catalysts and oxygen storage catalysts, crosslinking of nanofibers as an intermediate step to ceramic nanofiber manufacture, comparison of catalytic filter with the traditional methods and conventional catalytic converter, particle size reduction and studying the deactivation using water and H2S. All the types of catalytic filter which were fabricated were successful in reducing NO and oxidizing CO completely. The degradation temperature of NO and CO depended on the type, amount and loading of the catalyst nanoparticles on the alumina nanofiber.

Book excerpt: A multifaceted investigation of the reduction of nitric oxide by carbon monoxide using a ruthenium (102) single crystal catalyst in the pressure range 10/sup -3/ to 10 Torr and temperature range of 300 to 475/sup 0/C has been undertaken. Kinetic and isotopic results indicate that the reaction products CO/sub 2/ and N/sub 2/ were produced via two reaction mechanisms. Using a reducing gas mixture (low P/sub NO//P/sub CO/ ratio) a two site mechanism was operative involving NO dissociation. The carbon monoxide kinetic order varied from +1 to -3 and the nitric oxide order varied from +1 to 0. The catalyst under these conditions was determined to be metallic ruthenium with oxygen bonded within the first surface layer. The oxygen was unreactive and formed a (1 x 3)-0 LEED pattern. Under oxidizing conditions (high P/sub NO//P/sub CO/ ratio) the catalyst was ruthenium dioxide and the functional mechanism under these reaction conditions yielded a nitric oxide order of +2 to -4. Inclusion of a site poisoning mechanism under reducing conditions and an RuO/sub 2/ growth mechanism involving ruthenium cation transfer under oxidizing conditions into the kinetic rate laws led to an overall rate law which could be fit to the carbon monoxide and nitric oxide order plots. Using isotopically oxygen labelled reactants, it was observed that the three possible isotopes of carbon dioxide were produced. A .gamma.-CO surface species is postulated as an intermediate in the exchange process. The reaction was observed to be initially surface structure insensitive and the reaction kinetics were derived using a Langmuir-Hinshelwood formalism.
