Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catalytic reactions on metals are still nowadays involved in more than half of the chemical industrial processes. The winter school held at "I 'Ecole de in March 1996, 13 years after the first one, accounts Physique des Houches" for an evolution of the field in several directions. First, the emulation between theoretical chemistry and solid state physics has emerged on heuristic concepts, leading not only to explanations of the observed phenomena but, for the first time, to predictions of the reactivity of catalytic systems and of the reaction pathways. The second domain which during these years has become of primary importance is the abatement of the pollution. It concerns not only the conversion of polluting effluents but more and more major modifications of the processes to avoid the production of undesired products. Two striking examples are the necessary catalytic conversion of the 100 000 cubic meter of hydrogen that would be produced in a major incident of a nuclear power plant and the replacement of the CFC. The valorization of agricultural supplies can already be considered as one of the major achievement of catalysis. Indeed, the carbon of biosustainable raw materials represents more than 2 orders of magnitude the amount extracted from fossil fuels each year. Moreover, the molecules are already highly functionalised in contrast with hydrocarbons which require costly steps to be converted to the same products. They are now of current use in the elaboration of cosmetics, vitamins, polymers, etc.

Book excerpt: b”Supported Metal Single Atom CatalysisCovers all key aspects of supported metal single atom catalysts, an invaluable resource for academic researchers and industry professionals alike Single atom catalysis is one of the most innovative and dynamic research areas in catalysis science. Supported metal catalysts are used extensively across the chemical industry, ranging from fine and bulk chemical production to petrochemicals. Single atom catalysts (SACs) combine the advantages of both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts such as catalyst stability, activity, and high dispersion of the active phase. Supported Metal Single Atom Catalysis provides an authoritative and up-to-date overview of the emerging field, covering the synthesis, preparation, characterization, modeling, and applications of SACs. This comprehensive volume introduces the basic principles of single atom catalysis, describes metal oxide and carbon support materials for SAC preparation, presents characterization techniques and theoretical calculations, and discusses SACs in areas including selective hydrogenation, oxidation reactions, activation of small molecules, C-C bond formation, and biomedical applications. Highlights the activity, selectivity, and stability advantages of supported metal SACs compared to other heterogeneous catalysts Covers applications of SACs in thermal catalysis, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis Includes chapters on single atom alloys and supported double and triple metal atom catalysts Discusses the prospects, challenges, and potential industrial applications of SACs Supported Metal Single Atom Catalysis is an indispensable reference for all those working in the fields of catalysis, solid-state chemistry, materials science, and spectroscopy, including catalytic chemists, organic chemists, electrochemists, theoretical chemists, and industrial chemists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: to the Fundamental and Applied Catalysis Series Catalysis is important academically and industrially. It plays an essential role in the manufacture of a wide range of products, from gasoline and plastics to fertilizers and herbicides, which would otherwise be unobtainable or prohibitive ly expensive. There are few chemical-or oil-based material items in modern society that do not depend in some way on a catalytic stage in their manufacture. Apart from manufacturing processes, catalysis is finding other important and over-increasing uses; for example, successful applications of catalysis in the control ofpollution and its use in environmental control are certain to in crease in the future. The commercial import an ce of catalysis and the diverse intellectual challenges of catalytic phenomena have stimulated study by a broad spectrum of scientists including chemists, physicists, chemical engineers, and material scientists. Increasing research activity over the years has brought deeper levels of understanding, and these have been associated with a continually growing amount of published material. As recentlyas sixty years ago, Rideal and Taylor could still treat the subject comprehensively in a single volume, but by the 19 50s Emmett required six volumes, and no conventional multivolume text could now cover the whole of catalysis in any depth.

Book excerpt: With contributions from experts in supported metal catalysis from both the industry and academia, this book presents the latest developments in characterization and application of supported metals in heterogeneous catalysis. In addition to thorough and updated coverage of the traditional aspects of heterogeneous catalysis such as preparation, characterization and use in well-established technologies such as vehicle emission control, the book also includes emerging areas where supported metal catalysis will make significant contributions to future developments, such as fuel cells and fine chemicals synthesis. The second edition of Supported Metals in Catalysis comes complete with new and updated chapters containing important summaries of research in a rapidly evolving field. Very few other books deal with this highly pertinent subject matter and, as such, it is a must-have for anyone working in the field of heterogeneous catalysis.

It is targeted toward the catalyst scientist who needs to understand the characterization techniques as they apply to catalysts, and toward the instrumentalists who must recognize the characterization requirements of the catalyst scientist. It is the first volume to demonstrate the integrative approach for developing new catalysts, improving processes, and understanding catalysis science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catalysis in Confined Frameworks Understanding the synthesis and applications of porous solid catalysts Heterogeneous catalysis is a catalytic process in which catalysts and reactants exist in different phases. Heterogeneous catalysis with solid catalysts proceeds through the absorption of substrates and reagents which are liquid or gas, and this is largely dependent on the accessible surface area of the solid which can generate active reaction sites. The synthesis of porous solids is an increasingly productive approach to generating solid catalysts with larger accessible surface area, allowing more efficient catalysis. Catalysis in Confined Frameworks: Synthesis, Characterization, and Applications provides a comprehensive overview of synthesis and use of porous solids as heterogeneous catalysts. It provides detailed analysis of pore engineering, a thorough characterization of the advantages and disadvantages of porous solids as heterogeneous catalysts, and an extensive discussion of applications. The result is a foundational introduction to a cutting-edge field. Catalysis in Confined Frameworks: Synthesis, Characterization, and Applications readers will also find: An editorial team comprised of international experts with extensive experience Detailed discussion of catalyst classes including zeolites, mesoporous aluminosilicates, and more A special focus on size selective catalysis Catalysis in Confined Frameworks: Synthesis, Characterization, and Applications is an essential reference for catalytic chemists, organic chemists, materials scientists, physical chemists, and any researchers or industry professionals working with heterogeneous catalysis.
