Book Synopsis The Catalogue Raisonné of the Prints of Charles Meryon by : Richard Steven Schneiderman
Download or read book The Catalogue Raisonné of the Prints of Charles Meryon written by Richard Steven Schneiderman and published by Garton (Robin) Limited. This book was released on 1990 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book began as an updated version of the 1924 Delteil and Wright catalogue to incorporate Wright's extensive annotations made after publication. Schneiderman's research drew him to the conclusion that a chronological ordering rather than the hitherto accepted subject ordering, was the only viable way to follow the workings of Meryon's mind. While respecting the scholarship of Harold Wright, both in his errata and manuscript notes, examination of the actual proofs referred to has required substantial alterations, and it is in this perspective that this new catalogue has been written. Dr Schneiderman's extensive research covered all the major institutions and several private collections containing Meryon's work. The 103 etchings are listed chronologically, with each entry detailing its title and all known derivations, references to earlier catalogues, medium, size, and fate of the plate. Institutional holdings of each state are listed. There then follows a brief discussion of the subject of the print and any controversies s surrounding it. The author cites relevant comments from Burty's catalogue and any response by Meryon taken from Mes Observations and his letters. The various states, including previously uncatalogued ones, are numbered and listed noting their points of difference, any inscriptions and where the states may be found. Many of Meryon's prints were copied by later artists and where such copies may be deceptive notable differences are listed.

Book excerpt: First published in 1997. For this second edition of Art Books: A Basic Bibliography of Monographs on Artists, the vast number of new books published since 1985 was surveyed and evaluated. This has resulted in the selection of 3,395 additional titles. These selections, reflective of the increase in the monographic literature on artists during the last ten years, are evidence of the activities of a larger number of art historians in more countries worldwide, of the increasingly diverse and ambitious exhibition programs of museums whose number has also increased dramatically, and also of a lively international art market and the attendant gallery activities. The selections of the first edition have been reviewed, errors have been corrected and important new editions and reprints have been noted. The second edition contains 278 names of artists not represented in the first edition.

Download or read book Noir written by Lee Hendrix and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the technological advances of the nineteenth century, an abundance of black drawing media exploded onto the market. Charcoal, conte crayon, and fabricated black chalks and crayons; fixatives; various papers; and many lifting devices gave rise to an unprecedented amount of experimentation. Indeed, innovation became the rule, as artists developed their own unique—and often experimental—processes. The exploration of black media in drawing is inextricably bound up with the exploration of black in prints, and this volume presents an integrated study that rises above specialization in one over the other. Noir brings together such diverse artists as Francisco de Goya, Maxime Lalanne, Gustave Courbet, Odilon Redon, and Georges Seurat and explores their inventive works on paper. Sidelining labels like “conservative” or “avant-garde,” the essays in this book employ all the tools that art history and modern conservation have given us, inviting the reader to look more broadly at the artists’ methods and materials. This volume accompanies an eponymous exhibition on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum from February 9 to May 15, 2016.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Paris in the Cinema' offers a new approach to the representation of Paris on screen. Bringing together a wide range of renowned French and Anglophone specialists in film, television, history, architecture and literature, the volume introduces, challenges and extends ideas about the city as the locus of screen modernity. Through a range of concrete and historically-specific case studies, ranging from particular districts such as Saint-Germain-des-Pres and les banlieues (the suburbs) in French cinema, to iconic figures such as the detective Maigret and the lovers, and from locations such as the hotel, the building site and the Eiffel Tower to filmmakers such as Agnes Varda and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, this unique text demonstrates how the cinematic city of Paris now constitutes a major archive of French cultural history and memory.
