Book Synopsis Sasanian Seals and Sealings in the A. Saeedi Collection by : Rika Gyselen
Download or read book Sasanian Seals and Sealings in the A. Saeedi Collection written by Rika Gyselen and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the Sasanian seals published in this catalogue have been in the Saeedi family collection for several decades. The collection, however, has continued to grow since this publication was conceived, with more seals being added to it as the opportunity arose. The 131 seals included here are only a small part of the collection, and the sample applies to the clay sealings covered in this work. Where more than one sealing bears the same impression, we have contented ourselves with reproducing one well-preserved specimen, or, where necessary, two less well-preserved ones. This work, therefore, does not include all the sealings cited in my previous work on administrative seals. A concordance between those cited in that work and those published here is instead provided. Comprising as it does some 463 clay sealings, at least half of which bear the seals of administrative bodies or high-ranking dignitaries, this collection is the richest ever to have been published.

Download or read book Persia written by Jeffrey Spier and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2022-05-17 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating study of Persia’s interactions and exchanges of influence with ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. The founding of the first Persian Empire by the Achaemenid king Cyrus the Great in the sixth century BCE established one of the greatest world powers of antiquity. Extending from the borders of Greece to northern India, Persia was seen by the Greeks as a vastly wealthy and powerful rival and often as an existential threat. When the Macedonian king Alexander the Great finally conquered the Achaemenid Empire in 330 BCE, Greek culture spread throughout the Near East, but local dynasties—first the Parthian (247 BCE–224 CE) and then the Sasanian (224–651 CE)—reestablished themselves. The rise of the Roman Empire as a world power quickly brought it, too, into conflict with Persia, despite the common trade that flowed through their territories. Persia addresses the political, intellectual, religious, and artistic relations between Persia, Greece, and Rome from the seventh century BCE to the Arab conquest of 651 CE. Essays by international scholars trace interactions and exchanges of influence. With more than three hundred images, this richly illustrated volume features sculpture, jewelry, silver luxury vessels, coins, gems, and inscriptions that reflect the Persian ideology of empire and its impact throughout Persia’s own diverse lands and the Greek and Roman spheres. This volume is published to accompany a major international exhibition presented at the Getty Villa from April 6 to August 8, 2022.

Book Synopsis Prophets, Viziers and Philosophers by : Emily J. Cottrell
Download or read book Prophets, Viziers and Philosophers written by Emily J. Cottrell and published by Barkhuis. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prophets, viziers, and philosophers stand at the crossroads of civilizations. In world literature, they came to represent Judeo-Christian, Persian and Greek influences. As literary figures, they convey a sense of supranatural authority, elicited from their intimate experience of the divine, the mundane and the physical. Stemming from both orally transmitted material and some of the earliest foreign works to be translated into Arabic (the Bible; the Pañchatantra; the Alexander Romance), the three types of authoritative wisdom reveal a pivotal, civilizational moment in the development of Arabic literature from an oral tradition to a written one. By the middle of the eighth century CE, the unique fusion of Graeco-Roman political theology with Persian and Indian political traditions led to the renewal of questions already associated with authority in the Biblical and Byzantine traditions. The development of Arabic prose literature during the 8th-11th century CE captured, in a multiplicity of literary genres (legendary biographies, philosophical doxographies, mirrors for princes, collections of wise sayings and theological essays), a protean wisdom embedded in divine knowledge, practical discipline, scientific achievements and moral teachings. The collection of essays assembled in this volume addresses the models of divine and practical wisdom in some of the earlier Arabic prose texts passed down to us. All essays were initially presented and discussed at an international conference held at the Freie Universität Berlin in October 2014. More than isolated case studies, the contributions offer ground-breaking new research on essential works and figures of the early translation movement (from Greek, Syriac and Middle-Persian into Arabic). They also address, from the viewpoints of intertextuality and philology, the dissemination process of innovative syntheses elaborated by original medieval thinkers.

This book was released on 2018-02-21 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although by its title, this book seems to be about a specialized topic, the spread of Mithraic societies and its avatars, in time and geographical expanse, much enhances its relevancy. From Roman legionaries to chivalry orders, from dervish circles to guild organizations, and from Freemasons to French revolutionaries, the hierarchy of Mithraic societies, their initiation rites, and their oaths of secrecy, provided a model for brotherhood organization that was efficient, but also flexible; they could adapt their philosophy to the prevailing politico-religion conditions of the day, because they did not worship any particular god, but could also be comrades in arms with nascent religious movements, such as with Christianity. Mithra was the initial guarantor of their oath, and if need be it could be replaced by Jesus, Allah or any other divinity. Their ÒreligionÓ was their brotherhood, and as such they usually provided a counter-balance to the power elite, and had the potential to become politically active.
