Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Pictures in the Collection of the Earl of Radnor, Vol. 1 OR a considerable length of time previous to the death of the fourth Earl of Radnor, it was generally supposed that there was no record of when, or where, or by whom the pictures at Longford and elsewhere, belonging to the Earls of Radnor, had been collected. About 1889, when my father succeeded to the property, my mother, Helen Countess of Radnor, began to make a systematic search in the hope 'of finding among the family papers in the Muniment Room some records which might throw light on the hitherto obscure origin of the collection. Her labour was rewarded by finding amongst these papers, catalogues, lists, and ms. Notes referring to the pictures, etc., from about 1760 to 1835, and also several account-books, which had been carefully kept by the first Viscount Folkestone and by the first and second Earls of Radnor. A searching perusal of these (and they cover a period of over 100 years) resulted in the discovery, not only of the dates of the different sales where the purchases were effected, but also of the prices given for nearly all the more important pictures bought between the years 1720 and 1823.
