Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Paintings, Statuary, Casts, Bronzes, &C of the Corcoran Gallery of Art The corcoran gallery OF art, including ground, building, its con tents, and endowment fund, is the free gift of Mr. Wm. W. Corcoran to the public. In his own words to the Trustees to Whom the property was deeded May 10, 1869, it was designed for the encouragement of the Fine Arts; and in the deed the Object Of the institution is stated as the perpetual establishment and encouragement Of Painting, Sculp ture, and the Fine Arts generally, with the condition that it Should be Open to visitors without charge two days in the week, and on other days at moderate and reasonable charges, to be applied to the current expenses Of procuring, and keeping in order the building and its con tents. With these liberal purposes, the institution was chartered by act of Congress, May 24, 1870. By that act the building was declared exempt from all taxation, and authority given to settle the claim for rent during its occupancy by the Government. The building, planned by Mr. James Renwick, of New York, was begun in 1859. The civil war arrested the work, and early in 1861 the Government took it for the use Of the quartermaster-general's Depart ment, retaining it until four years after the close of the war. On the 10th of May, 1869, it was restored to its owner, who at once placed it in the hands of a board of nine Trustees, as already stated. After the Institution was incorporated by Congress, in 1870, the general work of reconstruction and adaptation of the building to its original purpose was begun, and after much delay and labor finished in 1871. Book Synopsis Legacies of Ancient Greece in Contemporary Perspectives by : Thomas M. F. Gerry
Download or read book Legacies of Ancient Greece in Contemporary Perspectives written by Thomas M. F. Gerry and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2022-04-20 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Legacies of Ancient Greece in Contemporary Perspectives' provides readers with opportunities to reconnect with the origins of thought in an astonishingly wide variety of areas: politics, economics, art, spirituality, gender relations, medicine, literature, philosophy, music, and so on. As the chapters in the book show, Classical Greek thought still informs much of contemporary culture. There are countless books and articles that deal with ancient Greece historically, and a similar number that focus on Greece as a contemporary travel destination. There is both a lot of interest in Greece as a place now, and in Greece’s history and culture, which formed the early origins of much of Western civilisation. The distinctive attraction of 'Legacies of Ancient Greece in Contemporary Perspectives' is that it brings together, by means of fascinating examples, the two areas of interest: Greece’s past in relation to its, and our, present. In addition to the general interest factor, the book suggests questions for re-examination: the individual chapters provide abundant original research on their subjects, and in most cases offer critiques on the assumptions about, and the interpretations of, Greece’s ancient and contemporary cultural practices. These challenges themselves stimulate far-reaching thought and discussion, a feature highly attractive to readers (and students) wishing to develop a more in-depth understanding of the legacies of ancient Greece.

Book Synopsis Mummy Portraits of Roman Egypt by : Marie Svoboda
Download or read book Mummy Portraits of Roman Egypt written by Marie Svoboda and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication presents fascinating new findings on ancient Romano-Egyptian funerary portraits preserved in international collections. Once interred with mummified remains, nearly a thousand funerary portraits from Roman Egypt survive today in museums around the world, bringing viewers face-to-face with people who lived two thousand years ago. Until recently, few of these paintings had undergone in-depth study to determine by whom they were made and how. An international collaboration known as APPEAR (Ancient Panel Paintings: Examination, Analysis, and Research) was launched in 2013 to promote the study of these objects and to gather scientific and historical findings into a shared database. The first phase of the project was marked with a two-day conference at the Getty Villa. Conservators, scientists, and curators presented new research on topics such as provenance and collecting, comparisons of works across institutions, and scientific studies of pigments, binders, and supports. The papers and posters from the conference are collected in this publication, which offers the most up-to-date information available about these fascinating remnants of the ancient world. The free online edition of this open-access publication is available at www.getty.edu/publications/mummyportraits/ and includes zoomable illustrations and graphs. Also available are free PDF, EPUB, and Kindle/MOBI downloads of the book.
