Book Synopsis A Catalogue of Various Clocks, Watches, Automata by : Simon Harcourt-Smith
Download or read book A Catalogue of Various Clocks, Watches, Automata written by Simon Harcourt-Smith and published by . This book was released on 1933 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taste for clocks and other mechanical curiosities of the West seems to have invaded the court of China at an early date ; already at the beginning of the fourteenth century a French ironsmith, Guillaume Boucher, probably a prisoner brought back from some Mongol raid into Hungary, had constructed for the first Yuan Emperor of China an elaborate clock with fountains ; and when, in 1599, the great Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci arrived in Peking he secured Imperial favour and an entry to the Court largely by a gift of clocks. It was, however, only at the end of the seventeenth century, in the reign of K'ang Hsi, that clocks in great numbers began to invade the Palace. This enlightened monarch, who was filled with an admiration, rare in his dynasty, for the arts and sciences of Europe, welcomed learned Jesuit mathematicians and philosophers to his Court, and formed a collection of scientific instruments and time-pieces of all descriptions. -- Introduction.
Book Synopsis Going for Gold by : Tessa Violet Murdoch
Download or read book Going for Gold written by Tessa Violet Murdoch and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the art of the gold box in 18th and 19th century Europe. Distinguished international scholars explore the contributions made by individual workshops in major European centres of production in the context of contemporary patronage and the international market for such boxes. Consideration is given to the design of gold boxes with reference to the V&A's important collection of design drawings. Leading experts explore the ways in which different techniques of gold box decoration -- portrait miniatures, gems, enamels, mosaics and hard-stones -- were developed. Contributors to the volume include experts from Amsterdam, Berlin, Dresden, London, Munich, New York, Paris, Rome, and St Petersburg. Senior museum curators, auction house specialists and independent scholars illustrate and discuss examples from private and public collections in their cities and elsewhere. The result is a unique record of the state of knowledge on the European production of gold boxes and of the history of collecting. This book will appeal to international collectors, scholars, dealers, museum curators and museum visitors, and all those interested in gold and silver fine art.

Book Synopsis Enamels of the World, 1700-2000 by : Haydn Williams
Download or read book Enamels of the World, 1700-2000 written by Haydn Williams and published by Khalili Collections. This book was released on 2009 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Enamels of the World 1700-2000', consisting of some twelve hundred works, is the largest and most comprehensive private collection known. It provides an unparalleled opportunity to appreciate the richness and diversity of the art of enamelling during the past three centuries, ranging from the imposing work of Qing dynasty China and Meiji Japan, to the magnificent creations of Romanov Russia and the royal courts of Europe and the East. Formed with the innovative criterion of considering the subject in a globally, it covers work from all major centres of production, allowing the enamelwork of a specific country to be viewed within its own context and as part of a wider history. This volume presents over three hundred pieces from the collection. The survey starts with an account of the evolution and refinement of the different enamelling techniques. Thereafter it studies the subject thematically, considering the impact of patronage and travel, as well as the role of nationalism in the development of historical revivalism. The enamelwork of China, Japan, the Islamic Lands and Europe are examined both in terms of local development and the assimilation of foreign influence. The history of three firms is reviewed in greater focus - Jean George Rémond, Fabergé and Cartier. Representing different periods within three hundred years covered by the collection, the character of these firms, though largely shaped by the genius of their directors, was also formed by the era in which they flourished. Whether looking at the subject in general or in detail, the reader is presented with an illuminating display of the great technical skill and creative ingenuity of the enamellers of the world. The volume is accompanied by a CD that presents the Khalili Collection of 'Enamels of the World 1700-2000' in its entirety.
