Book Synopsis The Glasgow Boys by : Roger Billcliffe
Download or read book The Glasgow Boys written by Roger Billcliffe and published by Frances Lincoln. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the 19th century, a group of young Glasgow-based painters established an international reputation for realism and plein-air landscape painting. Led by James Guthrie, John Lavery, Arthur Melville, George Henry, and E. A. Hornel, the Glasgow Boys, as they came to be known, shared an enthusiasm for strong, fresh colors, naturalistic subject matter, and a willingness to travel outside Scotland for subjects and settings. Their enthusiasm for naturalism was equaled only by their dislike of the Scottish arts establishment. In this widely acclaimed book, Roger Billcliffe describes not only the work of the individual artists but also their rejection by local collectors and officialdom before European success caused their work to become much in demand. First published 20 years ago, the book rekindled interest in the group and their work. Now redesigned with more than 200 illustrations in color, it introduces the collective to a new generation of readers and collectors.

Book Synopsis Turner's Water-Colours at Farnley Hall (Classic Reprint) by : Alexander Joseph Finberg
Download or read book Turner's Water-Colours at Farnley Hall (Classic Reprint) written by Alexander Joseph Finberg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Turner's Water-Colours at Farnley Hall Lister Parker. Mr. Parker was a neighbour of Mr. Fawkes, and that he was also an intimate friend is proved by the inscription on the back of a fine miniature of Napoleon Bonaparte, which is still pre served at Farnley Hall. This inscription states that the miniature was bought in Paris in I 802, and pre sented to Mr. Fawkes in the same year by his sincere friend Mr. Lister Parker. So it is probable that Mr. Fawkes may have heard Turner's work talked about by his Yorkshire friends some time before he bought any of the artist's drawings, and it is quite possible that he may have made Turner's personal acquaint ance through the intermediacy of those friends. Download or read book Samuel Prout, 1783-1852 written by Richard Lockett and published by B.T. Batsford. This book was released on 1985 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Prout was one of the first artists to specialize in continental views. In the early 1820s he popularized the scenery of the grand tour- Normandy, the Rhine, the Low Countries, Switzerland and Italy, particularly Venice- with a wider public, through the print trade and his books of engravings and lithographs. George IV appointed him 'Painter in Water-Colours in Ordinary' in 1829, and Prout continued to enjoy royal patronage. His especial skill in depicting architectural subjects won him the admiration of Ruskin, who was to become a personal friend. Yet since the end of the nineteenth century Prout's work has received relatively little attention from art historians."--Publisher description.
