Book Synopsis The Emperor's Private Paradise by : Nancy Zeng Berliner
Download or read book The Emperor's Private Paradise written by Nancy Zeng Berliner and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exhibition catalogue offers a magnificent, thorough study of 90 objects from the Qianlong Garden in Beijing's Forbidden City. Objects include wall paintings, furniture, architectural fittings, ceramics, and stone. They have been on public view infrequently and only in the Qianlong Garden, which is now undergoing a 20-year restoration under the lead of the World Monuments Fund and Beijing's Palace Museum. The garden is a two-acre tract consisting of 27 buildings, their contents, and a mature landscape--the whole complex is characterized as a "multi-layered artwork." Following an introduction by Elliott (Harvard), Berliner (Peabody Essex Museum) presents the general characteristics of scholar and emperor gardens, and the early gardens of Emperor Qianlong, along with a minute analysis of the Qianlong Garden. Yuan Hongqi (Palace Museum), Liu Chang (Tsinghua Univ., Beijing), and Henry Tzu Ng (World Monuments Fund) treat the garden's subsequent history. Interlaced throughout are superb illustrations of the objects and the garden, followed by a catalogue with small illustrations of objects, and their curatorial data; a chronology; a comparative, annotated time line; maps; glossary; and Chinese pronunciation guide. This must-buy publication is a model of sensitive scholarship that places the garden and its objects in an understandable, universal context. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above; general readers. General Readers; Lower-division Undergraduates; Upper-division Undergraduates; Graduate Students; Researchers/Faculty; Professionals/Practitioners. Reviewed by D. K. Haworth.

Book excerpt: Beginning in the mid-thirteenth century, the kilns of Dehua, capital of the Fujian Province in southeast China, began producing brilliant white porcelain pieces, the likes of which had never been seen before. Today, blanc de Chine pieces are some of the most sought-after collectibles in the world of Chinese art, their aesthetic appeal lying in their stark shapes and color, and their impossibly delicate, glasslike glaze. "Blanc De Chine" weaves together the most engaging, authoritative story of this precious art ever told. For the connoisseur, author Robert Blumenfield presents dazzling photographs and important research findings from around the world. For the novice collector, he details the differences between true blanc de Chine and other, less distinguished white wares. For the Asian art enthusiast, he provides a rich historical account of the evolution of the form, and the character and technical mastery that distinguish its finest pieces. Book excerpt: Starting as a noob and having a dream to become pro………………………. So from the title of my blog you all can guess that this is my first blog and I'm have no experience in writing blogs but I do want to share something with all of you that when I was in 9th standard there was a teacher of English and he was very expert in failing students most of the time 90% of the students were failed in his subject . It's not just that the children don't have skills or they write everything wrong in the answer book but the teacher used to point out silly mistakes and just mark failure . Sometimes we used to get only 1/2 marks in 5 marks questions .It was new for all of us because we used to get 90% at-least till 8th grade . suddenly the declination in marks makes all of our classmates very upset some of us started skipping his class .Most of us started making fun of him like we use to copy his walking style some time we use to still his books that he carries with him always also some of our teacher don't like him and they said he is nothing without his bag . Although we all were very frustrated because of his gesture that he used to have . His teaching technique was very unique and he never used white board during my whole period of study. He never used any marker to explain anything on board . He was the first teacher I ever knew who never used markers . He used to dictate when he wanted us to write something .Sometimes we asked for a word again but Never repeated the word . In the whole period of time he never told us how to do problems , we have to do things on our own and then we got wrong most of the time and he just put a cross and left the solution to do it again on our own. This was ridiculous that time we somehow by practicing we got that question correct. We also have to read the fiction and tell its meaning to class from 4/5 students he use to choose the correct explanation of the stanza it was quite fun because the student whose explanation is wrong was not allowed to sit till the class end but rule for girls were different he allow them to sit after a while. After all his cruelty we somehow started liking him because the gap between the toppers and backbenchers was no more, everyone
