Download or read book Nineteenth- and Twentieth-century Paintings written by Richard R. Brettell and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2009 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Lehman (1891-1969), one of the foremost art collectors of his generation, embraced the work of both traditional and modern masters. This volume catalogues 130 nineteenth- and twentieth-century paintings that are now part of the Robert Lehman Collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The majority of the works are by artists based in France, but there are also examples from the United States, Latin America, and India, reflecting Lehman's global interests. The catalogue opens with outstanding paintings by Ingres, Théodore Rousseau, and Corot, among other early nineteenth-century artists. They are joined by an exemplary selection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works by Degas, Renoir, Sisley, Pissarro, Seurat, Signac, Van Gogh, Cézanne, and Gauguin. Twentieth-century masters represented here include Bonnard, Matisse, Rouault, Dalí, and Balthus. There are also newly researched modern works by Vicente do Rego Monteiro, Kees van Dongen, Dietz Edzard, and D.G. Kulkarni (dizi). Robert Lehman's cultivated taste for nineteenth-century French academic practitioners and his intuitive eye for emerging young artists of his own time are documented and discussed. Three hundred comparative illustrations supplement the catalogue entries, as do extensively researched provenance information, exhibition histories, and references. The volume also includes a bibliography and indexes.

Download or read book Degas written by Götz Adriani and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines Degas' use of line in his drawings and paintings, looks at his portrayal of dancers, jockeys, nudes, and landscapes, and assesses his influence on modern art. Edgar Degas was a cool diagnostician. Beyond the pretty ballet dancers frequentlyreproduced, he was a keen observer of modern city life, its fragmented existence, bustle, loneliness and freedom. His subject matter was restrictedthe opera, horseraces, the dance, cafes, the bathyet his method was almost clinical. In drawing a nude at her toilet, he treated the female form as an object devoid of sensual connections, which allowed him to focus on light and color. Degas, a master of line, executed hundreds of drawings, oil sketches and pastels that were the bedrock of his art and the underpinnings of his major oil paintings. The catalogue of a 1984 exhibition in Berlin and Tubingen, this is one of the most revealing, intimate and superbly printed volumes on Degas. Sixty color reproductions of the highest quality leave the reader awestruckit's almost like seeing Degas for the first time. Two-hundred-and-forty halftones include equine and figure studies and sober portraits. Adriani's definitive study brings a new perspective to this artist who believed that one must be born a draughtsman, while one can develop into a painter.
Download or read book Painted Love written by Hollis Clayson and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2003-10-30 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this engrossing book, Hollis Clayson provides the first description and analysis of French artistic interest in women prostitutes, examining how the subject was treated in the art of the 1870s and 1880s by such avant-garde painters as Cézanne, Degas, Manet, and Renoir, as well as by the academic and low-brow painters who were their contemporaries. Clayson not only illuminates the imagery of prostitution-with its contradictory connotations of disgust and fascination-but also tackles the issues and problems relevant to women and men in a patriarchal society. She discusses the conspicuous sexual commerce during this era and the resulting public panic about the deterioration of social life and civilized mores. She describes the system that evolved out of regulating prostitutes and the subsequent rise of clandestine prostitutes who escaped police regulation and who were condemned both for blurring social boundaries and for spreading sexual licentiousness among their moral and social superiors. Clayson argues that the subject of covert prostitution was especially attractive to vanguard painters because it exemplified the commercialization and the ambiguity of modern life.

Book Synopsis Degas and the Nude by : George T. M. Shackelford
Download or read book Degas and the Nude written by George T. M. Shackelford and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nude figure was critical to the art of Edgar Degas throughout his life, and yet his expansive body of work on this subject has been overshadowed by his celebrated portraits and dancers. Degas and the Nude is the first book in a generation to explore the artist's treatment of the nude from his early years in the 1850s and 1860s, through his triumphs in the 1880s and 1890s, all the way to his last decades, when the theme dominated his artistic production in all media. With essays by leading critics, the book aims to provide a new interpretation of Degas's evolving conception of the nude and to situate it in the subject's broader context among his peers in 19th-century France. Among the scores of reproductions is one of the most important of Degas's early paintings, Scene of War in the Middle Ages, which exerted a lifelong influence on the artist's treatment of the female nude and includes poses poses repeated throughout his career. Also included are monotypes of the late 1870s, which illustrate Degas's most explicitly sexual depictions of women in Parisian brothels, and pictures portraying the daily life of women wherever they resided. Together these iterations range over more than a half-century of virtuoso achievement and manifest a groundbreaking look at the evolution of this master artist.
Book Synopsis Landscape with Smokestacks by : Howard J. Trienens
Download or read book Landscape with Smokestacks written by Howard J. Trienens and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against a background of controversy over the possibility that works of art owned by American collectors may have originally been stolen by the Nazis from Jews later killed in the holocaust, the story of one work of art Landscape with Smokestacks by Degas captured the headlines. As told by the media, the story is straightforward. The landscape, owned by Jewish banker in the Netherlands, was sent to Paris in 1939. The Nazis occupied France and stole the Landscape. The Jewish banker and his wife were killed in the Holocaust. Their heirs searched for the landscape but did not locate it until, half a century later, it was found in the possession of an art collector in Chicago. The heirs sued to recover the work.
