Book excerpt: This catalog contains a brief description of 152 military simulations and models which are in general use throughout the Department of Defense. The models and simulations are categorized as to application. Thus, there are 46 Strategic Forces models, 22 General Purpose Land Forces models, 14 General Purpose Air Forces models, 19 General Purpose Naval Forces models, 11 General Purpose Combined Arms models, 32 Logistics models, 3 Personnel models, 3 Communications-Electronics models and 2 Politico-Military simulations. All models are listed alphabetically, and are indexed by short and long title and model type. The model descriptions were submitted by 38 proponents and reflect the efforts of 47 separate developers. The description for each model includes: proponent, developer, purpose, general description, input, output, limitations, hardware, software, time requirements, security classification, frequency of use, users, and point of contact for additional information. The inclusion of a specific model in the catalog was at the discretion of its proponent, and thus does not in any way constitute indorsement of the model by the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Book excerpt: The 11th Edition of the catalog contains descriptions of 347 simulations, war games, exercises, and models in general use throughout the Department of Defense and in the defense establishments of Australia, Canada, England, and West Germany. The individual models are listed alphabetically in Appendix D by acronym (if one exists) or by long title. Each catalog entry includes the date of implementation; the proponent, point of contact, purpose, description, construction, sidedness, and limitations of the model; the improvements and modifications that are planned for the model; the input to and output of the model; the hardware, software, security classification, frequency of use, and users of the model; and general data pertaining to the time requirements of the model. The matrix of models by category, which incorporates a new system of model classification called SIMTAX, itemizes specific characteristics of each model. Consequently, the matrix enables the user of the catalog to readily find models that will fulfill particular needs. The catalog draws upon inputs from analysis agencies in the various defense establishments, independent contractors and research organizations, and similar catalogs of games and simulations. Keywords: War games; Computerized simulation indexes; Military strategy; United States military forces; Theater level operations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the potential synergies between computer simulation and wargaming Based on the insights of experts in both domains, Simulation and Wargaming comprehensively explores the intersection between computer simulation and wargaming. This book shows how the practice of wargaming can be augmented and provide more detail-oriented insights using computer simulation, particularly as the complexity of military operations and the need for computational decision aids increases. The distinguished authors have hit upon two practical areas that have tremendous applications to share with one another but do not seem to be aware of that fact. The book includes insights into: The application of the data-driven speed inherent to computer simulation to wargames The application of the insight and analysis gained from wargames to computer simulation The areas of concern raised by the combination of these two disparate yet related fields New research and application opportunities emerging from the intersection Addressing professionals in the wargaming, modeling, and simulation industries, as well as decision makers and organizational leaders involved with wargaming and simulation, Simulation and Wargaming offers a multifaceted and insightful read and provides the foundation for future interdisciplinary progress in both domains.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this catalog is to provide the Army staff, Army Commands, and the war gaming community with a source document which lists and briefly describes all available Army sponsored war games and war gaming models, as well as those that are currently being gamed or developed or are programed for future gaming or development. It is not intended to provide a detailed or exhaustive treatment of each game or model, but rather to provide the basic data to assist the war game or study action officer in his preliminary research. A secondary purpose of the catalog is to encourage and enhance the exchange of information and to promote increased coordination within the war gaming and study community. Additionally it is hoped that this catalog will assist in eliminating duplication of effort in the expensive field of model development and studies by providing a list of existing models and completed studies that may be used to meet current requirements. Book excerpt: This book is a fascinating examination of a subject that has enormous consequences but few initiates--the system of military combat simulations and their advocates in defense establishments. The scope and importance of this field may be hinted at each spring during budget debates, but until now no one has made a full public inquiry into the military studies, the analysis system, and the people behind these obscure enterprises. How did war games come into vogue? Who designs the models that test and measure weapons capabilities--tests whose outcomes their supporters want to use to determine the allocation of millions of dollars, not to mention the deployment of U.S. armaments, around the globe? How are the potential uses of weapons studied when empirical testing is prohibitive or impossible? And what is the state of the war-gaming art and profession? These are but a few of the crucial questions addressed and answered in this work. The authors interviewed and observed war-gaming professionals in depth, exploring the extent and status of gaming in the defense community and examining these in terms of purpose, means of production, operations, uses, benefits, and costs. Consequently, their book is not simply an analysis but a portrait of the profession. As such, it will serve not only as a blueprint for necessary improvements in the military area but also as the catalyst for future work in diverse areas, since the problems of largescale models examined in a war-game context are now being experienced in such newer fields as energy policy and urban planning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Combat Modeling" is a systematic learning resource and reference text for the quantitative analysis of combat. After a brief overview, authors Washburn and Kress present individual chapters on shooting without feedback; shooting with feedback; target defense; attrition models; game theory and wargames; search; unmanned aerial vehicles; and terror and insurgency. Three appendices provide a review of basic probability concepts, probability distributions, and Markov models; an introduction to optimization models; and a discussion of Monte-Carlo simulations. Drawing on their many years of experience at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, Washburn and Kress have created a reference that will provide the tools and techniques for analysts involved in the underpinnings of combat decisions. This is a book that can be used as a military manual, reference book, and textbook for military courses on this vital subject.

Book excerpt: A look at wargaming’s past, present, and future—from digital games to tabletop games—and its use in entertainment, education, and military planning. With examples from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Harpoon, Warhammer 40,000, and more! Games with military themes date back to antiquity, and yet they are curiously neglected in much of the academic and trade literature on games and game history. This volume fills that gap, providing a diverse set of perspectives on wargaming’s past, present, and future. In Zones of Control, contributors consider wargames played for entertainment, education, and military planning, in terms of design, critical analysis, and historical contexts. They consider both digital and especially tabletop games, most of which cover specific historical conflicts or are grounded in recognizable real-world geopolitics. Game designers and players will find the historical and critical contexts often missing from design and hobby literature; military analysts will find connections to game design and the humanities; and academics will find documentation and critique of a sophisticated body of cultural work in which the complexity of military conflict is represented in ludic systems and procedures. Each section begins with a long anchoring chapter by an established authority, which is followed by a variety of shorter pieces both analytic and anecdotal. Topics include the history of playing at war; operations research and systems design; wargaming and military history; wargaming’s ethics and politics; gaming irregular and non-kinetic warfare; and wargames as artistic practice.
