Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Almaguin Highlands, an extensive territory covering a 90 kilometre corridor from Huntsville, north to Callander, west to Dunchurch, and east to the Algonquin Park border, is a land rich with lakes, rivers, and a lively history. Once considered as a site for a First Nations Reserve in the early 1800s, Almaguin became a centre for lumbering and ultimately a year-round mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. This 2-book bundle is Astrid Taim's definitive guide to the region and its heritage. Almaguin: A Highland History offers a wide range of stories from the opening of the area by colonization roads to the first vessels on the Magnetawan River and the courage of the early pioneers. Included are community histories of the many towns, villages, and ghost towns of today; profiles of colourful personalities; as well as interesting and amusing tales of these rugged early times. Almaguin Chronicles explores the relationship between lumbering and settlement throughout the Parry Sound District — the last frontier of this part of Ontario. Throughout, rare archival photographs and excerpts from unpublished memoirs augment the text.

But that’s only the beginning. Over the course of twelve interwoven novels, Rice crafts a richly imagined, magnificently transporting epic around her chilling, charismatic antihero, Lestat. [Rice’s] undead characters are utterly alive.”—The New York Times Book Review “If you surrender and go with her . . . you have surrendered to enchantment, as in a voluptuous dream.”—The Boston Globe “Frightening, sensual . . . Anne Rice will live on through the ages of literature. . . . To read her is to become giddy as if spinning through the mind of time, to become lightheaded as if our blood is slowly being drained away.”—San Francisco Chronicle “Unrelentingly erotic . . . sometimes beautiful, and always unforgettable.”—The Washington Post “Rice has created universes within universes, traveling back in time as far as ancient, pre-pyramidic Egypt and journeying from the frozen mountain peaks of Nepal to the crowded, sweating streets of southern Florida.”—Los Angeles Times “Fiercely ambitious, nothing less than a complete unnatural history of vampires.”—The Village Voice

Book excerpt: Mega book bundle. Over 1700 pages (6000,000 words) of Epic Fantasy, adventure, love, some historical fantasy and a light sprinkling of humour. All set in ancient times and exotic locations. The story begins with Hakeem, a mercenary from the desert city of Karsh (in what is now Syria). Growing up in a monastery, all he ever wanted was to become a religious monk. He can’t understand why he was refused by the Grand Abbot, whom he loved like a father. The old man told him he was destined to become something called a 'paladin'. Broken hearted and penniless, he runs away making a long journey to join the desert mercenaries fighting in the Greek colonies on the western coast of Turkey. Paladins were very rare , and the Shayvist monks believed they were sent by their God, each with a great task. The old Abbot didn't know that a second child had already been 'sent' but what possible task would require two paladins? After fighting in a war in Greek Turkey, Hakeem rises to the level of a senior commander and is summoned home by the new Grand Abbot of his people. Little does he realise, then, that he will soon be caught up in events that were prophesied two thousands years before. The once mighty Elves are fading. They have lost almost all their magic. Their numbers are shrinking. They no longer live longer than humans and each year they have fewer and fewer children. Their final destruction has been foretold and now the time is all but upon them. They are destined to face barbarian hordes greater than the time of the Aryans accompanied by an ancient sorcerer who can command a demon army. There seems little hope that it wont overwhelm them completely and destroy them without a trace. Only through an ancient prophecy can they be saved. Hakeem, an Elvish Princess and their adopted daughter join to flee assassins and begin the search for a way to save the Elves. Readers Favorites Reviews: “Historical fantasy really doesn't get better than this” “first-rate … truly memorable” "A brilliant job of writing ... merges elves into Greek mythology and creates strong and fascinating characters. Rating: 5.0 stars

Book excerpt: Theodora Tuxedo wasn’t the only feline to arrive and stay with Eugene’s family at Block 223. Firstborn, a son Satu (also a tuxedo but in white mess dress), would plop out with a mewl into Stepdad’s pyjama pants one early Sunday morning, with tortoiseshell Dua and calico Tiga to follow. There’s a lot to learn if you’re a kitten: how to use your whiskers, how to know when a rat is a rat (and when it isn’t) and how to accept the tail you’ve been born with. Loving her life now as an indoor cat, shunning her past life as a stray, Theodora can’t understand the kittens’ eagerness to venture back “outdoors” into the community. Along with Theodora’s (and Zigzag’s) unexpected offspring, The Community Cat Chronicles 2 – New Kittens on the Block delightfully shares imagined stories of real residents, both two legged and four, around the housing estates of Avenue 1.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following tales recorded by Mrs. Claus in her Book of Days Journal are stories about Santa's adventures that are not restricted to only the holiday in December. They tell about his part in spreading the Christmas spirit, but they also reveal that he's known to other timelines and places where he performs simple acts of kindness and resolves a surprising assortment of dilemmas. Customarily, Santa's headquarters are in the North Pole, and his mate is Mrs. Claus. His helpers are craftspeople and artisans commonly referred to as "Elves." But Santa doesn't describe such a group of talented, skilled, and willing staff as elves, although they do seem to be magical in meeting the launch deadline every Christmas Eve. In addition, the stories you'll explore make it known that Santa has the best of technical equipment, resources, communications, and support devices available for the sole purpose of keeping his annual operations "spot on." Mrs. Claus obviously recorded much of Santa's narrations, but these few accounts are all that could be restored of her journal. If she kept other such books, they have yet to be found. It is indeed a blessing that what you'll read are just some of the untouched records of Santa's life and good works that have never, ever been disclosed before. You can check your computer for more information about the father of Christmas. Research his origins, history, and folklore; some notably under that of Saint Nicholas, and possibly even relative to the Magi of biblical times. Santa crosses over so many cultures and traditions, so his names include: Claawwss from the animal kingdom, St. Nick, Kris Kringle, Pelznickel, Papa Noel, Sunty Clus, No Ojisan, Grandfather Frost, Kerstman, Sinterklaas, Christkindl, Father Frost, Babbo Natale, Pere Noel, The Wonder Worker, and countless others worldwide. For the inner child in all of us, happy journeys! G.F.

Book excerpt: A vibrant, revealing memoir about the cultural and familial pressures that shaped George Elliott Clarke’s early life in the Black Canadian community that he calls Africadia, centred in Halifax, Nova Scotia. As a boy, George Elliott Clarke knew that a great deal was expected from him and his two brothers. The descendant of a highly accomplished lineage on his paternal side—great-grandson to William Andrew White, the first Black officer (non-commissioned) in the British army—George felt called to live up to the family name. In contrast, his mother's relatives were warm, down-to-earth country folk. Such contradictions underlay much of his life and upbringing—Black and White, country and city, outstanding and ordinary, high and low. With vulnerability and humour, George shows us how these dualities shaped him as a poet and thinker. At the book’s heart is George’s turbulent relationship with his father, an autodidact who valued art, music and books but worked an unfulfilling railway job. Bill could be loving and patient, but he also acted out destructive frustrations, assaulting George’s mother and sometimes George and his brothers, too. Where Beauty Survived is the story of a complicated family, of the emotional stress that white racism exerts on Black households, of the unique cultural geography of Africadia, of a child who became a poet, and of long-kept secrets.
