Book excerpt: Into the Deep traces one woman's spiritual odyssey from birthright evangelicalism through postmodern feminism and, ultimately, into the Roman Catholic Church. As a college student, Abigail Favale experienced a feminist awakening that reshaped her life and faith. A decade later, on the verge of atheism, she found herself entering the oldest male-helmed institution on the planet--the last place she expected to be. With humor and insight, Favale describes her gradual exodus from Christian orthodoxy and surprising swerve into Catholicism. She writes candidly about grappling with wounds from her past, Catholic sexual morality, the male priesthood, and an interfaith marriage. Her vivid prose brings to life the wrenching tumult of conversion--a conversion that began after she entered the Church and began to pry open its mysteries. There she discovered the startling beauty of a sacramental cosmos, a vision of reality that upended her notions of gender, sexuality, identity, and authority. This is a thoroughly 21st century conversion, a compelling account of recovering an ancient faith after a decade of doubt.

Book excerpt: This is a commentary on Pope Pius XI"s Encyclical Casti Conubii. During the past centuries of Christianity the attacks of the enemies of the Church have largely been leveled against the truths of faith. In other words, articles of the creed were denied. Today, as not a few Catholic writers are observing, their attacks are increasingly centered on moral truths. That is, the commandments of the decalogue are questioned and rejected. As the heresies of the past led to a high development of the Church's dogmatic teaching so those of the present will unquestionably lead to a more intensive development of ethical truth. As in the past, heresy in the field of faith led the Church authentically to define dogmas of faith, so today, heresy in the field of morals will undoubtedly lead her more definitely to state her position with regard to ethics or moral doctrine. The encyclical on Christian Marriage is an important pronouncement in the field of morals. And it is a pronouncement that was entirely to be expected, since attacks on the moral code are today centering so largely on the family. An example in its pages of an almost dramatic expression of a moral doctrine is found in the words in which the Supreme Pontiff sets forth the Church's view regarding the artificial limitation of the family. "Since therefore," the encyclical reads, "openly departing from the uninterrupted Christian tradition some recently have judged it possible solemnly to declare another doctrine regarding this question, the Catholic Church, to whom God has entrusted the defense of the integrity and purity of morals, standing erect in the midst of the moral ruin which surrounds her, in order that she may preserve the chastity of the nuptial union from being defiled by this foul stain, raises her voice in token of her divine ambassadorship and through Our mouth proclaims anew: any use whatsoever of matrimony exercised in such a way that the act is deliberately frustrated in its natural power to generate life is an offense against the law of God and of nature, and those who indulge in such are branded with the guilt of a grave sin." In his encyclical Pius XI urges a correct knowledge of matrimony and a Catholic Action that will work toward a universal and permanent restoration of true Christian marriage. It was in the hope of contributing something toward the furtherance of these aims that the present brochure was prepared. Granted that the ideal would be for all to read and study the encyclical itself, the fact is that many complain that the text makes difficult reading, and have asked that its content be stated in a somewhat simplified form. This brochure is an attempt to supply such a simplified version. While practically the entire English text is quoted, it is nevertheless broken down into many parts. Furthermore it is interspersed with short analyses, brief comments, and occasional additional explanations and facts. The encyclical on Christian Marriage was given to the world on the last day of the year 1930 and is known under the Latin title Casti Connubii (Of Chaste Wedlock). An encyclical on the same subject, promulgated by Pope Leo XIII on February 10, 1880, carries the Latin title, Arcanum Divinae Sapientiae. Casti Connubii falls logically into three major parts. The first sets forth in a positive way the Catholic position regarding marriage, the second deals with the errors and vices contrary to true marriage and the third with remedies or ways and means of restoring wedlock to its pristine dignity and purity. There is a short preface or exordium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vatican. The Inquisition. Contraception. Celibacy. Apparitions and miracles. Plots and scandals. The Catholic Church is seldom out of the news. But what do its one billion adherents really believe, and how do they put their beliefs into practice in worship, the family, and society? This down-to-earth account goes back to the early Christian creeds to uncover the roots of modern Catholic thinking. It avoids getting bogged down in theological technicalities, and throws light on aspects of the Church's institutional structure and liturgical practice that even Catholics can find baffling: why go to confession? How are people made saints? What is 'infallible' about the Pope? Topics addressed include: • scripture and tradition • sacraments and prayer • popular piety • personal and social morality • reform, mission, and interreligious dialogue Lawrence Cunningham, a theologian, prize-winning writer and university teacher, provides an overview of Catholicism today which will be indispensable for undergraduates and lay study groups.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive history of the Vatican’s agenda to defeat the forces of secular liberalism and communism through international law, cultural diplomacy, and a marriage of convenience with authoritarian and right-wing rulers. After the United States entered World War I and the Russian Revolution exploded, the Vatican felt threatened by forces eager to reorganize the European international order and cast the Church out of the public sphere. In response, the papacy partnered with fascist and right-wing states as part of a broader crusade that made use of international law and cultural diplomacy to protect European countries from both liberal and socialist taint. A Twentieth-Century Crusade reveals that papal officials opposed Woodrow Wilson’s international liberal agenda by pressing governments to sign concordats assuring state protection of the Church in exchange for support from the masses of Catholic citizens. These agreements were implemented in Mussolini’s Italy and Hitler’s Germany, as well as in countries like Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland. In tandem, the papacy forged a Catholic International—a political and diplomatic foil to the Communist International—which spread a militant anticommunist message through grassroots organizations and new media outlets. It also suppressed Catholic antifascist tendencies, even within the Holy See itself. Following World War II, the Church attempted to mute its role in strengthening fascist states, as it worked to advance its agenda in partnership with Christian Democratic parties and a generation of Cold War warriors. The papal mission came under fire after Vatican II, as Church-state ties weakened and antiliberalism and anticommunism lost their appeal. But—as Giuliana Chamedes shows in her groundbreaking exploration—by this point, the Vatican had already made a lasting mark on Eastern and Western European law, culture, and society.
