When Arin and her husband invested in a gym to keep up their self defense lessons, Jacob came highly recommended through a mutual friend. Looking to retire from MMA, Jake jumped at the chance to go off-grid. Having lived his life in the limelight, he loves the peace he finds in Alaska. A peace that ends the moment he meets outgoing, exuberant Cassandra. When Cass’ past closes in, will she blow out of town just as quickly as she blew in? Can Jake convince her he’s strong enough to protect them both?

Book excerpt: Religion is a particularly useful field within which to study Roman self-definition, for the Romans considered themselves to be the most religious of all peoples and ascribed their imperial success to their religiosity. This study builds on the observation that the Romans were remarkably open to outside influences to explore how installing foreign religious elements as part of their own religious system affected their notions of what it meant to be Roman. The inclusion of so many foreign elements posed difficulties for defining a sense of Romanness at the very moment when a territorial definition was becoming obsolete. Using models drawn from anthropology, this book demonstrates that Roman religious activity beginning in the middle Republic (early third century B.C.E.) contributed to redrawing the boundaries of Romanness. The methods by which the Romans absorbed cults and priests and their development of practices in regard to expiations and the celebration of ludi allowed them to recreate a clear sense of identity, one that could include the peoples they had conquered. While this identity faced further challenges during the civil wars of the Late Republic, the book suggests that Roman openness remained a vital part of their religious behavior during this time. Foreign Cults in Rome concludes with a brief look at the reforms of the first emperor Augustus, whose activity can be understood in light of Republican activity, and whose actions laid the foundation for further adaptation under the Empire.

Troilus and Cressida is a tragedy often labelled a "problem" play because of its apparent blend of genres and its difficult themes. Set in the Trojan Wars it tells a story of doomed love and honour, offering a debased view of human nature in war-time and a stage peopled by generally unsympathetic characters. The revised edition makes an ideal text for study at undergraduate level and above.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Imperial Women of Rome explores the constraints and activities of the women who were part of Rome's imperial families from 35 BCE to 235 CE, the Roman principate. Boatwright uses coins, inscriptions, papyri, material culture, and archaeology, as well as the more familiar but biased ancient authors, to depict change and continuity in imperial women's pursuits and representations over time. Focused vignettes open each thematic chapter, emphasizing imperial women as individuals and their central yet marginalized position in the principate. Evaluating historical contingency and personal agency, the book assesses its subjects in relation to distinct Roman structures rather than as a series of biographies. Rome's imperial women allow us to probe the meanings of the emperor's authority and power; Roman law; the Roman family; Roman religion and imperial cult; imperial presence in the city of Rome; statues and exemplarity; and the military and communications. The book is richly illustrated and offers detailed information in tables and appendices, including one for the life events of the imperial women discussed in the text. Considered over time and as a whole, Livia, the Agrippinas and Faustinas, Julia Domna, and others closely connected to Rome's emperors enrich our understanding of Roman history and offer glimpses of fascinating and demanding lives.

Book excerpt: Much like his knight-lord father, Edwin cares little for pretty words of poetry and song. Duty, loyalty, discipline: these are the only words that truly matter to him as a knight in service of the Brotherhood . . . that is, until he meets Evelina. Beautiful beyond measure, she’s also a Gravewalker, a witch able to make use of the emotional residues left behind in cemeteries and burial grounds to power her magics. Displeased with this alliance, Edwin’s father declares all-out war against her kind, resulting in Evelina’s death, Edwin’s imprisonment, and the disappearance of Mela, their precocious young daughter. Years later, Mela, now the most powerful Gravewalker in her clan, marshals her sisters to abandon their peaceful ways as caretakers of the dead and instead raise an army of undead warriors against the knight-lord and his men, threatening utter ruin for all. Freed by an irascible bard with her own dubious intentions, Edwin is now the only one who can put a stop to his daughter’s quest for vengeance. To save everything he knows, he must become more than just a knight . . . He must become the Knight Proper.
