Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Casket of Reminiscences The author of the Reminiscences contained in this volume has little to say in regard to them by way of proem. They were written to amuse a few hours of the summer and autumn of the present year, and appeared almost daily in the columns of the Washington Chronicle precisely as they were originally thrown off from his pen. Though very sensible of their deficiencies in point of literary finish, he has not judged it expedient to modify them in any essential particular; and he will, indeed, be highly gratified if they shall now he read by those into whose hands they may chance to fall with as much interest as they seemed originally to awaken. He has no apology to make for certain rather unkind strictures indulged in regard to several individuals upon whose character and conduct he has undertaken to remark. He has chosen to speak the unvarnished truth, both as to men and things; and he is quite well satisfied that, sooner or later, all considerate and impartial men will come to the conclusion that in doing so he is not justly subject to censure. Should there he those who shall choose to join issue with him as to facts herein narrated they will now have it in their power to do so under circumstances altogether convenient to them. Memory for reminiscences of the past. My memory has become a wonder to many people, and it is'the impression it has made that prompts the request of many for me to write a biog raphy. In regard to memory, it is but just to say that it is not universal in its capacity; things in which I am interested, things that are striking, things that touch and arouse sympathy, sorrow, joy, anger, disgust, ha tred, hope, and fear; things that arouse, excite, or deeply impress; things that inspire, exalt, and refine, etc., require no effort on my part to remember; will ing or unwilling they fix themselves upon my memory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Leaden Casket: A Novel Harley Street, was driving home one fine May evening, and had all but reached his destination, when he received a considerable mental shock. He had been running his daily stage of duty since seven o'clock that morning, and now, worn out by this long strain on his clinical sagacity, was lying back in his brougham, when it stopped abruptly, checked by a little crowd collected outside his own door. Perceiving where he was, he got out of his carriage with medical celerity, rapped vigorously at the knocker, and then, to beguile the time, turned to see what was going on in the street. His vantage-ground of five or six steps of elevation above the roadway enabled him to see an Italian organ-grinder, who was at one mo ment gesticulating wildly, and calling upon heaven, earth, and all around to witness that he had a right either to make music, or be paid to leave ofi'; the next playing a few frantic snatches of the street melody of the day; then stopping to gesticulate once more, and again dashing at the implement of music and whirling around L'ne Emma. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Family Reminiscences I always in my own mind connected my grand father's death with a little scene of which I was Witness during his stay with us and which impressed me greatly. He and I had been to Visit my mother's grave together. We were coming away, when before we reached the little churchyard gate, he turned round and looking towards the grave we had just left, but as it seemed beyond it, over the budding meadows to the clear spring horizon, he took off his hat and smiled the most beautiful smile I have ever seen on any human face. It was exactly as. Though someone he loved had called him. I was too much awed and impressed to speak to him, and after a minute or two he turned back again and we left the churchyard together. But I never forgot that moment or the unearthly expression of his face. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Keziah Coffin Trumpet in a fog; a fog blown in during the night by the wind from the wide Atlantic. So wet and heavy that one might taste the salt in it. So thick that houses along the main road were but dim shapes behind its gray drapery, and only the gates and fences of the front yards were plainly in evidence to the passers by. The beach plum and bayberry bushes on the dunes were spangled with heady drops. The pole on Cannon Hill, where the beacon was hoisted when the packet from Boston dropped anchor in the bay, was shiny and slippery. The new weathervane, a gilded whale, presented to the "Regular" church by Captain Zebedee Mayo, retired whaler, swam in a sea of cloud. The lichened eaves of the little "Come-Outer" chapel dripped at sedate intervals. The brick walk leading to the door of Captain Elkanah Daniels's fine residence held undignified puddles in its hollows. And, through the damp stillness, the muttered growl of the surf, three miles away at the foot of the sandy bluffs by the lighthouse, sounded ominously. Book excerpt: Even before shots were fired at Fort Sumter, slaves recognized that their bondage was at the root of the war, and they began running to the Union army. By the war's end, nearly half a million had taken refuge behind Union lines in improvised "contraband camps". These were crowded and dangerous places, with conditions approaching those of a humanitarian crisis, yet families and individuals took unimaginable risks to reach them, and they became the first places where many Northerners would come to know former slaves en masse. Drawing on records of the Union and Confederate armies, the letters and diaries of soldiers, transcribed testimonies of former slaves, and more, Manning sweeps us along, from the contraband camps, sharing insight and stories of individuals and armies on the move, to debates in the halls of Congress. The alliances between former slaves and Union soldiers which were warily begun in the contraband camps would forge a dramatically new but highly imperfect alliance between the government and the African Americans. That alliance would outlast the war, and help destroy slavery and ward off the very acute and surprisingly tenacious danger of re-enslavement. It also raised, for the first time, humanitarian questions about refugees in wartime and legal questions about civil and military authority with which we still wrestle, as well as redefined American citizenship, to the benefit but also to the lasting cost of African Americans. --

Coffin, Her Reminiscences, Addresses, Papers and Ancestry "There be of them that have left a name behind them, that their praises might be reported." - Ecclesiaticus, XLIV., 8. The life of Mrs. Coffin portrays to some extent the early record of many philanthropies, and is closely connected with movements which occupied her active years during the last half of the last century. Christian activity was the strong element in her nature. She turned to her Bible and her inner ear caught the words of Jesus when he took the ancient scroll, opened it and read: "The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He hath anointed me to preach the Gospel to the poor; He hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised."
