Book excerpt: The purpose of this multiple case study was to investigate the factors contributing to the persistence of successful foreign language learners who chose to continue studying a foreign language beyond the high school graduation requirement. The theories guiding this study are Gardner and Lambert’s 1972 Socio-Educational Model (SEM) of motivation (as cited by Gardner, 2010), Deci and Ryan’s (2002) Self Determination Theory (SDT), and Dörnyei’s (2005) L2 Motivational Self System. The participants were 14 high school students who were enrolled in a level four or Advanced Placement foreign language class. Interviews, classroom observations, and the Attitudes/Motivation Test and Battery (Gardner, 1985) were utilized for data collection. The data were then analyzed by an interpretational analysis process. Students described their foreign language learning experiences as positive yet difficult. The factors that contributed to student persistence were early exposure to the language, teachers, positive class environments, effort expended on the part of the student, and language opportunities outside of the class. All students exhibited instrumental and integrative motivational orientations. Finally, students were motivated to continue studying their foreign language by experiencing language breakthroughs, desire to become fluent, familiarity with the language, and being presented with authentic ways to apply the language. An investigation that examines why students do not continue in foreign language programs, a longitudinal study that looks at student journeys for the duration of their foreign language career, and a replication study that utilizes a larger sample taken from a larger geographical area are recommendations for further research.

After graduating, students will be exposed to different languages and cultures in the workforce, and they must be prepared. Students often leave their language of choice after the one or two semester course requirement; it takes more than those one or two courses for students to gain the cultural and linguistic skills needed to succeed. Institutions must start to convey the importance of those skills in order produce culturally aware and global students. Student placement, student motivation, and classroom pedagogy all contribute to student persistence. The research shows students persist in their language learning when they are taught the using Second Language Learning Theory, specifically the Interaction Hypothesis, and Sociolinguistics. The research also shows the importance of increasing students' Intercultural Knowledge through Intercultural Development in world language programs. This instrumental case study found students who are self-motivated persist in their chosen language of study. The participants in the study were all students enrolled in, or faculty teaching at Island Life Community College, a tri-campus community college in the northeastern part of the United States.

Book excerpt: The present inquiry is a qualitative case study of conversations and attitudes of students participating in a non-required, second-year conversation section offered as a voluntary adjunct to required second year courses in Italian. The findings in this dissertation support calls by policy makers in foreign language education who advocate for a more integrated and holistic approach to foreign language education. Through this empirical qualitative case study, I have used the construct of Third Space (Gutiérrez, 2008) to examine students' development of multiple literacies (Swaffar & Arens, 2005) in a foreign language conversation-based classroom. The theory of Third Space is seen as a kind of authentic intersubjective space, where students' ways of knowing and learning are accepted and expanded in the learning environment. The study describes the results from the implementation of a language pedagogy based on the model of multiple literacies in an Italian conversation class. Students in the class read and viewed a wide variety of authentic materials, around which they anchored their class discussions. Through activities involving multiple readings of the given text, the students co-constructed their interpretations based on personal experiences and on the socio-cultural background of the text. Students also engaged in self-reflective exercises documenting their own learning processes. Through interpretive analysis of student work produced in the class, the ecology of learner developments and the corresponding classroom talk are assessed. I have identified three major themes that are evident as essential elements to the students' developing trans-linguistic proficiency in conjunction with their evolving cultural literacy. In particular, self-reflection and identity, expanded practices of knowing and learning, and the influence of semiotic mediation on classroom interactions are the three elements that define how these students articulated their Third Space in conjunction with this particular language learning context.
