Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Robertson Smith Case: Recorded Reasons and Imputed Motives of the Free Church Leaders The Free Church has many trials to the fidelity of her people. Her principles - now that the generation which saw them fought out in the conflict which preceded the Disruption is passing away - require some application of the intellect to grasp, and much is being said and done to make them appear infinitesimal, and those who steadily maintain them unreasonable. It is a thing quite to be expected that when such a question as that of Mr. Robertson Smith comes up it should be an element to loosen the attachment to the Church of many of those who are dissatisfied with the course she has seen fit to take. And it was inevitable that such a question should arise. But, while we cannot be surprised that it should operate to the estrangement of some who are a little extreme on the one side or the other, we are entitled to expect that the ground on which the dissentients justify the attitude they take should be only the legitimate ground that the action of the Church is, in their opinion, unwise, and constitutionally incompetent, and - if they will - unjust. If they add to this that it was taken by the leaders of the Church from motives other than those avowed, they are bound to accompany the charge with the proof. They are not entitled, from any feelings of disappointment, to carry invectives beyond the subject-matter on which they are dissenting, except on proof. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Communications on the Case of Professor Robertson Smith: In the General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland, Held at Glasgow in 1878 It has been thought desirable to publish in a more accessible form the following Communications which have appeared in the columns of the London Weekly Review. Taken together, they have a bearing upon three questions of vital importance: - (1) The historical truth of the Book of Deuteronomy; (2) The true doctrine of Inspiration; (3) The duty of the Church to prevent such teaching in her theological halls as she considers to be dangerous and unsettling. On each one of these three questions the Church must give forth no uncertain sound when it may come before her for judgment in a competent shape. One of the Communications, now reprinted, deals in a popular manner with the second and third of these questions, and calls attention to what the author regards as Professor Smith's Theory of Inspiration. The other writers have confined their statements to the first question, so far as Professor Smith's writings are concerned, because they regard it as the only one which, in the process now depending in the Church Courts, has ceased to be "sub judice." They wrote for the purpose of explaining and defending a decision of the General Assembly which had been assailed in the columns of the public Press, and which they regarded as a final judgment of the Supreme Court of the Free Church. Book excerpt: William Robertson Smith (1846-1894) was successively the embattled champion of the emergent higher criticism as applied to the Old Testament, chief editor of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, and Professor of Arabic at Cambridge University. Today he is acknowledged to have been a pioneering figure in both social anthropology and the study of comparative religion, deeply influencing the thinking of J. G. Frazer, Emile Durkheim and Sigmund Freud. The first full-length biography of Robertson Smith to be published for almost a hundred years, this text makes use of hitherto unknown material preserved by the Smith family and draws upon the extensive range of correspondence between Smith and such scholars as Albrecht Ritschl, Paul de Lagarde, Julius Wellhausen, Abraham Kuenen and Theodor Noldeke. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the biography locates and defines the place of this remarkable polymath within the context of Free Church Calvinism, the Scottish Enlightenment and 19th century German Protestant theology. It highlights Smith's interest in physics and philosophy, his friendship with contemporary artists, his Oriental travels, and his involvement in the social life of Edinburgh and Aberdeen. In recent years, the image of Smith as a comparative religionist has come to dominate all other perspectives and indeed tends now to overshadow his fame as an Old Testament scholar. This book seeks to redress the balance, aiming to discover the theological drive behind Smith's manifold activities.
