Book excerpt: Child sexual abuse (CSA) is prevalent in South Africa and, along with the stigma often endured following the abuse, can have lasting effects on sense of self. There have been few studies into how survivors of CSA construct identity or, specifically, how music therapy may afford such construction. Using a multiple case study design, this research investigated how three adolescent survivors of CSA, who took part in individual music therapy processes, constructed their identities through the techniques afforded them in sessions. All three participants had experienced multiple trauma, most notably abandonment/orphanhood, and this appeared to impact on their exploration of identity in sessions. Findings showed that the main affordances of music therapy for participants were the mastery experienced in relation to certain techniques (which appeared to support confidence and further exploration), and the use of symbolism (promoting the exploration of difficult experiences, as well as affording participants experimentation with preferred identities).

Book excerpt: Domestic violence or intimate partner violence refers to physical, sexual, or emotional harm committed by a current or former intimate partner. Intimate partner violence has varied and serious repercussions in the lives of its victims. The direct consequences of violence combined with the physical aftermath of emotional distress, fear, and anxiety can lead to a variety of ailments. Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and suicide are both major concerns for female victims of IPV. Considering that the issues faced by many victims of DV are pervasive and complex, treatment for survivors needs to be comprehensive and multifaceted. Music therapy is an evidence-based form of treatment that is well-suited for addressing the issues faced by victims of this type of abuse. This study focused on the use of music therapy in decreasing the distress levels of victims of intimate partner violence as well as comparing expressive and receptive music therapy techniques. The researcher hypothesized that expressive music therapy would be more effective in decreasing distress than receptive music therapy. In this study, a board-certified music therapist (MT-BC) facilitated four music therapy sessions at domestic violence shelters. The group participants were women who were actively fleeing a threat of harm from a former or current intimate partner. Two of the sessions focused on expressive music therapy interventions and two sessions focused on receptive music therapy sessions. The participants (N = 13) were asked to rate their distress with an adapted form of the K6 distress scale before and after music therapy sessions. It was found that there were no significant differences in participants' distress levels whether they participated in expressive or receptive music therapy. Regardless of the questions or the type of therapy, distress scores significantly decreased from the pretest (M = 2.50, SE = 1.5) to the posttest (M = 1.80, SE = 1.6), Wilk's Lambda = .37, F(1, 11) =18.80, p = .001, eta2 = .63.

Book excerpt: Sexual abuse is a traumatic event, which leaves survivors with mental, physical and emotional needs. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore whether closed group music therapy sessions could enhance self-compassion, as reported and expressed by sexual abuse survivors. The music therapy process that was conducted was designed to facilitate the three core constructs of self-compassion as researched by Kirsten Neff (2003a), namely self-kindness, common humanity and mindfulness. The study explored the experiences of six sexual abuse survivors residing at a community centre in Lavender Hill, Cape Town, South Africa. Music therapy sessions took place once a week for a period of six weeks and the main musical components of the sessions included song-writing, group singing, drumming, vocal and instrumental improvisations and relaxation. The findings emerged from the interpretive phenomenological analysis of the individual semi-structured interview transcripts and thick descriptions of excerpts of the audio recordings. From the findings of this study it was concluded that the group music therapy sessions offered sexual abuse survivors opportunities for: self-exploration, self-confidence, interpersonal connections, the experience of being supported, encouragement, enjoyment and vitality, stress relief, emotional exploration and expression, and transformation of perspectives. These findings were represented by the following three main themes; characteristics of their lifeworlds, the affordances of music therapy for the group, and the groupaÌ22́Ơ4́Øs experience of transformation, which are then discussed in relation to self-compassion.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of a volunteer music therapy program on the self-esteem and locus of control of children survivors of domestic violence residing in a shelter for domestic violence. An experimental group which received music therapy and a no-contact control group were used in this study. The Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory Scale was used to measure the subjects' selfesteem while the Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control scale was used to measure the subjects' locus of control in both groups. These tests were administered before and after treatment for the experimental group. The control group was pre-tested during their first week in the shelter, and post-tested during their last week. No significant difference between groups was found for the subjects' self esteem while significant differences were found between groups for the subjects' locus of control. It appeared that some individual subjects in the experimental group benefited from their involvement in the music therapy sessions.
