Book excerpt: Excerpt from Carrigmore or Light and Shade, in West Kerry The golden sun was just setting behind Tower Hill. Its glorious radiance tinted the hills and fields and clustering hamlets of St. Brendan's valley with rich hues of crimson and purple. The mackerel fishers were busy at the little landing place called Duneen, launching their trim canoes, putting their oars and nets to rights, jesting iwith the young colleens who have come to see that their fathers and brothers would be duly provided with food while searching for the scaly treasures out there in the ocean during the long watches of the night. Book excerpt: A wealth of information on the wildlife, stories and history of the islands. For those wishing to visit in small boats or kayaks there are details of:? Landings? Camping? Drinking water? Tidal informationOileain is a detailed guide to almost every Irish offshore island. The guide is comprehensive, describing over 300 islands, big and small, far out to sea and close in by the shore, inhabited and uninhabited. Oileain tells it as it is, rock by rock, good and bad, pleasant and otherwise. It concentrates on landings and access generally, then adds information on camping, drinking water, tides, history, climbing, birds, whales, dolphins, legends or anything else of interest.Oileain will, I hope, appeal to all who go to sea in small boats, divers and yachtsmen as well as kayakers. The sheer level of detail contained in Oileain must surely throw new light on places they thought they knew well. It is not a book about kayaking. It so happens that a practical way of getting to islands is by kayak, and that is how the author gets about. Scuba divers and RIBs get in close too. Yachtsmen get about better than most, and they too enjoy exploring intensively from a dinghy. With the increasing availability of ferries, boatless people will also enjoy Oileain. Offshore islands are the last wilderness in Ireland. Hillwaking is now so popular that there are few untrampled mainland hills. Ninety per cent of offshore islands are uninhabited outside of the first fortnight in August, and eighty per cent even then. You won't meet many other people, if any at all, out beyond an Irish surf line. It is a time of change though, and holiday homes are very much the coming thing in some offshore areas. Sea going will never stop being a great adventure. Therefore, offshore islands are still the preserve of the very few. Now is a golden era for exploration.

This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is often considered a companion volume of O'Hart's, "Irish Pedigrees: the Orgin and Stem of the Irish Nation," 2 Volumes, the Third Edition of which was published in 1881, and provided the genealogies of the families which branched from that ancient stem; together with the genealogies of Anglo-Irish and Anglo-Norman families which settled in Ireland from time to time since the English invasion. In this Volume the author documents some 257 additional genealogies which were collected, most of them in the MSS. Library of Trinity College, or in the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin, since the Third Edition of Irish Pedigrees was compiled, with a few of the original genealogies contained in that Edition, corrected or enlarged. Also included within "The Irish and Anglo-Irish Landed Gentry" is an extensive Appendix, which provides transcriptions of primary sources destroyed by fire in 1922. The author has also included numerous lists of Forfeiting Proprietors, names included on "Transplanters' Certificates," lists relating to the seventeenth-century land settlements, lists of the Irish Brigades, and much, much more. Approximately 22,000 surname references. Paperback, (1884), repr. Appendices, Index, 792 pp.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why would countries without nuclear weapons even think about fighting nuclear-armed opponents? A simple answer is that no one believes nuclear weapons will be used. But that answer fails to consider why nonnuclear state leaders would believe that in the first place. In this superb unpacking of the dynamics of conflict under conditions of nuclear monopoly, Paul C. Avey argues that the costs and benefits of using nuclear weapons create openings that weak nonnuclear actors can exploit. Tempting Fate uses four case studies to show the key strategies available to nonnuclear states: Iraqi decision-making under Saddam Hussein in confrontations with the United States; Egyptian leaders' thinking about the Israeli nuclear arsenal during wars in 1969–70 and 1973; Chinese confrontations with the United States in 1950, 1954, and 1958; and a dispute that never escalated to war, the Soviet-United States tensions between 1946 and 1948 that culminated in the Berlin Blockade. Those strategies include limiting the scope of the conflict, holding chemical and biological weapons in reserve, seeking outside support, and leveraging international non-use norms. Counterintuitively, conventionally weak nonnuclear states are better positioned to pursue these strategies than strong ones, so that wars are unlikely when the nonnuclear state is powerful relative to its nuclear opponent. Avey demonstrates clearly that nuclear weapons cast a definite but limited shadow, and while the world continues to face various nuclear challenges, understanding conflict in nuclear monopoly will remain a pressing concern for analysts and policymakers.
