Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Carrier Frequency Offset Estimation for Multicarrier Communications Submitted by Li Cheng For the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in Feb., 2004 Multicarrier (MC) transmission is a promising technology in broadband wireless access involving high-throughput data transmission. MC communications are advantageous over single-carrier transmission in dealing with inter-symbol interference (ISI) due to the channel delay spread. However, MC communications also have certain drawbacks, including the vulnerability to carrier frequency offset (CFO) arising from the difference of oscillator frequencies between the transmitter and the receiver or from the Doppler shift. The performance of MC systems degrades severely even if the CFO is a small fraction of the subcarrier spacing. Therefore, correction of CFO is very important for MC communications. This thesis considers two variants of MC technologies, OFDM and MC-CDMA, and investigates CFO estimation for both systems. For OFDM systems, a semi-blind CFO estimation algorithm utilizing the embedded pilot tones, which are primarily used for channel estimation, is proposed for slowly-varying multipath channels. The algorithm is bandwidth efficient because it requires no training symbols. It is also demonstrated that the proposed algorithm can be regarded as the general form of the virtual-carrier-based CFO estimation algorithm previously proposed in the literature. For the purpose of practical implementation, a reduced-complexity estimator is also developed. It offers a tradeoff between estimation accuracy and implementation complexity. It is shown by simulation results that the proposed algorithm outperforms the cyclic-prefix-based algorithm in terms of the estimated CFO mean-square error performance. For MC- CDMA systems, a blind CFO estimator is proposed for the downlink transmission, where all users' signals are synchronously transmitted. The estimation scheme consists of two stages: feed-forward acquisition and error-feedback data-directed tracking. The acquisition stage is implemented utilizing the orthogonality among spreading codes and it is capable of bringing the CFO as large as the signal bandwidth to a small value. The residual CFO is refined by the tracking stage, which estimates the CFO and users' data simultaneously based on the maximum likelihood criterion. A reduced-complexity estimator based on the zero-padding FFT technique is also developed to reduce the implementation complexity. The performance of the proposed algorithm is investigated by extensive computer simulations. Book excerpt: A Multicarrier Communication (MCM) system such as an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing OFDM or Discrete Multi Tone (DMT) system has been shown to be an effective technique to combat multipath fading in wireless communications. OFDM is a modulation scheme that allows digital data to be efficiently and reliably transmitted over a radio channel, even in multipath environments. OFDM transmits data by using a large number of narrow bandwidth carriers. These carriers are regularly spaced in frequency, forming a block of spectrum. The frequency spacing and time synchronization of the carriers is chosen in such a way that the carriers are orthogonal, meaning that they do not cause interference to each other. In spite of the success and effectiveness of the OFDM systems, it suffers from two well known draw backs: large Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) and high sensitivity to Carrier Frequency Offset (CFO). The presence of the CFO in the received carrier will lose orthogonality among the carriers and because the CFO causes a reduction of desired signal amplitude in the output decision variable and introduces Inter Carrier Interference (ICI). It then brings up an increase of Bit Error Rate (BER). This makes the problem of estimating the CFO an attractive and necessary research problem. In this dissertation blind estimation techniques will be proposed to estimate the offset parameter.

Book excerpt: The data rate and spectrum efficiency of wireless mobile communications have been significantly improved over the last decade or so. Recently, the advanced systems such as 3GPP LTE and terrestrial digital TV broadcasting have been sophisticatedly developed using OFDM and CDMA technology. In general, most mobile communication systems transmit bits of information in the radio space to the receiver. The radio channels in mobile radio systems are usually multipath fading channels, which cause inter-symbol interference (ISI) in the received signal. To remove ISI from the signal, there is a need of strong equalizer which requires knowledge on the channel impulse response (CIR). This is primarily provided by a separate channel estimator. Usually the channel estimation is based on the known sequence of bits, which is unique for a certain transmitter and which is repeated in every transmission burst. Thus, the channel estimator is able to estimate CIR for each burst separately by exploiting the known transmitted bits and the corresponding received samples. In this thesis we investigate and compare various efficient channel estimation schemes for OFDM systems which can also be extended to MC DS-CDMA systems. The channel estimation can be performed by either inserting pilot tones into all subcarriers of OFDM symbols with a specific period or inserting pilot tones into each OFDM symbol. Two major types of pilot arrangement such as block type and comb type pilot have been focused employing Least Square Error (LSE) and Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) channel estimators. Block type pilot sub-carriers is especially suitable for slow-fading radio channels whereas comb type pilots provide better resistance to fast fading channels. Also comb type pilot arrangement is sensitive to frequency selectivity when comparing to block type arrangement. However, there is another supervised technique called Implicit Training (IT) based channel estimation which exploits the first order statistics i.

Book excerpt: Khaled Fazel Stefan Kaiser Digital Microwave Systems German Aerospace Center (DLR) Bosch Telecom GmbH Institute for Communications Technology D-71522 Backnang, Germany D-82234 Wessling, Germany In this last decade of this millennium the technique of multi-carrier transmission for wireless broadband multimedia applications has been receiving wide interests. Its first great success was in 1990 as it was selected in the European Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) standard. Its further prominent successes were in 1995 and 1998 as it was selected as modulation scheme in the European Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB-T) and in three broadband wireless indoor standards, namely ETSI-Hiperlan-II, American IEEE-802. 11 and Japanese MMAC, respectively. The benefits and success of multi-carrier (MC) modulation in one side and the flexibility offered by spread spectrum (SS) technique in other hand motivated many researchers to investigate the combination of both techniques, known as multi-carrier spread-spectrum (MC-SS). This combination benefits from the main advantages of both systems and offers high flexibility, high spectral efficiency, simple detection strategies, narrow band interference rejection capability, etc. . The basic principle of this combination is straightforward: The spreading is performed as direct SS (DS-SS) but instead of transmitting the chips over a single sequence carrier, several sub-carriers could be employed. As depicted in Figure 1, after spreading with assigned user specific code of processing gain G the frequency mapping and multi-carrier modulation is applied. In the receiver side after multi-carrier demodulation and frequency de-mapping, the corresponding detection algorithm will be performed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is discussed as a special form of multi-carrier modulation (MCM). One major problem of the OFDM system is the sensitivity to an unknown frequency offset at the receiver. To improve the performance of the OFDM system, correction of the frequency offset is required before decision making. An adaptive method of frequency offset correction is presented. The adaptation algorithm used here is based on the LMS and the estimation is proven unbiased. A multiuser communications system having similar signal structure to the OFDM system, termed as multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA), is discussed. The MC-CDMA system is susceptible to multiuser interference. Although orthogonal multiuser codes are used, the frequency selective fading might destroy the orthogonality between different codes and result in multiuser interference. The conventional decorrelator can be used to cancel such interference completely but has the disadvantage of enhancing noise power. An adaptive decorrelation algorithm, known as the Bootstrap algorithm, is implemented to separate interference from the desired user's signal. Such algorithm is shown to perform better than the conventional decorrelator particularly in the low interference region.

Being a frequency-domain approach to communications, OFDM has important advantages in dealing with the frequency-selective nature of high data rate wireless communication channels. As the needs for operating with higher data rates become more pressing, OFDM systems have emerged as an effective physical-layer solution. This short monograph is intended as a tutorial which highlights the deleterious aspects of the wireless channel and presents why OFDM is a good choice as a modulation that can transmit at high data rates. The system-level approach we shall pursue will also point out the disadvantages of OFDM systems especially in the context of peak to average ratio, and carrier frequency synchronization. Finally, simulation of OFDM systems will be given due prominence. Simple MATLAB programs are provided for bit error rate simulation using a discrete-time OFDM representation. Software is also provided to simulate the effects of inter-block-interference, inter-carrier-interference and signal clipping on the error rate performance. Different components of the OFDM system are described, and detailed implementation notes are provided for the programs. The program can be downloaded here.
