Book Synopsis The University Library by : John Huston Finley
Download or read book The University Library written by John Huston Finley and published by . This book was released on 1926 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genesis of the University Library lies in a compilation of "Little Masterpieces," the first of which were published more than twenty-five years ago. The material included in these volumes was selected by able editors and writers whose experience was great and whose taste was excellent. Out of the "Little Masterpieces" grew a course in liberal education which was known as the Pocket University, and out of the Pocket University grew, finally, the University Library. The publishers most gratefully acknowledge their debt to the editors who compiled the original volumes: Bliss Perry, Henry van Dyke, Hardin Craig, Thomas L. Masson, Asa Don Dickinson, the late Hamilton W. Mabie, George Iles, the late Dr. Lyman Abbott, and others. Some of the most important material contained in the Pocket University is, of course, included in the University Library but the sequence has been entirely changed and the scope of the work greatly broadened. Fully two thirds of the material is new and the literature of the world has been ransacked to find appropriate text to fit the basic educational needs of the modern public. - Publisher' s note
Book Synopsis The Golden Age of Persian Art 1501-1722 by : Sheila Canby
Download or read book The Golden Age of Persian Art 1501-1722 written by Sheila Canby and published by . This book was released on 2000-04 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The golden age of Persian art was the era of the Safavid dynasty. In this time of dynamic religious and political developments, painting and textiles achieved new heights of brilliance and opulence, and architecture flourished with the growth of cities. This resplendent volume provides a chronological history of the reign of each successive Safavid shah, including that of Shah 'Abbas I, who came to the throne in 1588. He not only built grand mosques and palaces, but also welcomed foreign travelers -- and their artistic influences -- to his court. The superb illustrations complement a much-needed text by a leading scholar in the field. This volume is sure to become a standard reference on this sublime period in Persian painting, architecture, illuminated manuscripts, ceramics, metalwork, and other decorative arts.
Book Synopsis Tracing Archaeology's Past by : Andrew L. Christenson
Download or read book Tracing Archaeology's Past written by Andrew L. Christenson and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 17 critical essays, the first book to address the historiography of archaeology evaluates how and why the history of archaeology is written. The emphasis in the first section is on how archaeologists use historical knowledge of their discipline. For example, it can help them to understand the origin of current archaeological ideas, to learn from past errors, and to apply past research to current questions. It can even be integrated into the new liberal arts curricula in an attempt to instruct students in critical thinking. The second section considers the sociopolitical context within which past archaeologists lived and worked and the contexts within which historians of archaeology write. The topics treated include the rise of capitalism and colonialism and the rise of "modern archaeology," the political contexts and changing form of the history of Mesoamerican archaeology, the decline to obscurity of once prominent archaeologists, and the institutional and ideological "fossilization" of American classical archaeology. The final section focuses on researching and presenting the history of archaeology. The authors discuss past archaeologists in light of their institutional affiliations, the use of historic methods to interpret past archaeological notes and collections, and the means of presenting the history of archaeology on videotape. The final paper offers a plan for documenting the many records (diaries, fieldnotes, correspondence, unpublished reports) in public and private hands that contain the history of archaeology.

Entries are arranged alphabetically, with each entry giving biographical data, information on the type of ceramics produced, the location of the pottery and dates indicating when marks have changed, as well as images of the different marks used. Three useful indexes enable the reader to search by mark rather than maker, in various categories such as creatures, monograms and signs. Revised by expert collector James Hazlewood, British Studio Potters' Marks, third edition, is the essential reference guide for collectors of British studio pottery.

Book Synopsis Global Convergence Cultures by : Matthew Freeman
Download or read book Global Convergence Cultures written by Matthew Freeman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s convergent media industries readily produce stories that span multiple media, telling the tales of superheroes across comics, film and television, inviting audiences to participate in the popular universes across cinema, novels, the Web, and more. This transmedia phenomenon may be a common strategy in Hollywood’s blockbuster fiction factory, tied up with digital marketing and fictional world-building, but transmediality is so much more than global movie franchises. Different cultures around the world are now making new and often far less commercial uses of transmediality, applying this phenomenon to the needs and structures of a nation and re-thinking it in the form of cultural, political and heritage projects. This book offers an exploration of these national and cultural systems of transmediality around the world, showing how national cultures – including politics, people, heritage, traditions, leisure and so on – are informing transmediality in different countries. The book spans four continents and twelve countries, looking across the UK, Spain, Portugal, France, Estonia, USA, Canada, Colombia, Brazil, Japan, India, and Russia.
