Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pietism is a reform movement originating among German Lutherans in the 17th century. It focused on personal faith, reacting against Lutheran Church's emphasis on doctrine and theology over Christian living. The movement quickly expanded, exerting anenormous influence on various forms of Christianity, and became concerned with social and educational matters. Indeed, Piestists showed a strong interest in issues of social and ecclesial reform, the nature of history and historical inquiry, the shape and purpose of theology and theological education, the missional task of the church, and social justice and political engagement. Though, the movement remained largely misunderstood, especially in Anglo-American contexts: negative stereotypes depicted Pietism as a quietist and sectarian form of religion, merely concerned with the 'pious soul and its God'. The main proposal of the editors of this volume is to correct this misunderstanding: assembling a deep collection of essays written by scholars from a variety of fields, this work demonstrates that Piestism was a movement characterized by great depth and originality. Besides, they show the vitality and impulse of Pietism today and emphasize the ongoing relevance of the movement for contemporary problems and questions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford History of Poetry in English is designed to offer a fresh, multi-voiced, and comprehensive analysis of 'poetry': from Anglo-Saxon culture through contemporary British, Irish, American, and Global culture, including English, Scottish, and Welsh poetry, Anglo-American colonial and post-colonial poetry, and poetry in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean, India, Africa, Asia, and other international locales. The series both synthesizes existing scholarship and presents cutting-edge research, employing a global team of expert contributors for each of the fourteen volumes. This volume explores the developing range of English verse in the century after the death of Chaucer in 1400, years that saw both change and consolidation in traditions of poetic writing in English in the regions of Britain. Chaucer himself was an important shaping presence in the poetry of this period, providing a stimulus to imitation and to creative expansion of the modes he had favoured. In addition to assessing his role, this volume considers a range of literary factors significant to the poetry of the century, including verse forms, literary language, translation, and the idea of the author. It also signals features of the century's history that were important for the production of English verse: responses to wars at home and abroad, dynastic uncertainty, and movements towards religious reform, as well as technological innovations such as the introduction of printing, which brought influential changes to the transmission and reception of verse writing. The volume is shaped to include chapters on the contexts and forms of poetry in English, on the important genres of verse produced in the period, on some of the fifteenth-century's major writers (Lydgate, Hoccleve, Dunbar, and Henryson), and a consideration of the influence of the verse of this century on what was to follow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What's this about 'Episodes in a Rich Life?'" asked my Imaginary Friend. I'm always embarrassed when my IF speaks up, but glad that this time we were-that is, that I was-alone. If I ever admitted to the world my IF exists, some would doubt my sanity. Others would have their opinions confirmed. "I can't remember a time," my IF continued, "when you've had enough in your pocket to talk about being rich." I looked around, saw no one in earshot, and broke my rule against replying to my IF. "There are ways of being rich without having much cash," I explained. "You can have friends, enjoy experiences, learn much about a multitude of things . . . all of that, and more. And you can properly consider yourself rich." "When you put it like that," my IF admitted, "I can see your point. One more thing you mustn't forget." "And what's that?" I wondered. "Maybe I should have put it in my book." "You always have me," said my IF. "This conversation is over," I said. "In fact, it never happened." . . . Not long after I retired, I joined a Journal Writers group of senior citizens. Each week, I had to write (and read to the group) a page or so, telling what had happened to me, either during the week previous or sometime in the past. I have bundled many of these Episodes into more-or-less related groups that I call Chapters, but the reader may call them "Aggregations"-I sincerely hope not "Aggravations". The point is, I have experienced these Episodes and enjoyed most of them, and I hope the Reader enjoys them, too, whether reading straight through the book, or doing random sampling

Book excerpt: Olivia Silver directs this coming-of-age indie drama in which a family begins a 3,000 mile road trip to a new life in California. Whisked away by their father Tom (John Hawkes) in the dead of night from their home in New England, twelve-year-old Greta (Ryan Simpkins), her elder sister Caroline (Kendall Toole), and younger brother Nat (Ty Simpkins), find themselves crammed into the family's beat-up station wagon on a cross-country journey to Arcadia, where their father has a new job. Told that their mother will be meeting them there, an initially wary Greta, making her own journey of self-discovery, begins to have her suspicions that is something is wrong, when, with the journey becoming ever more claustrophobic, her father's demeanour descends from a cheery, day-trip dad to that of a belligerently tense hothead, ready-to-snap at any moment.
