Book Synopsis The Turn to Provisionality in Contemporary Art by : Raphael Rubinstein
Download or read book The Turn to Provisionality in Contemporary Art written by Raphael Rubinstein and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-12 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his influential essay “Provisional Painting,” Raphael Rubinstein applied the term “provisional” to contemporary painters whose work looked intentionally casual, dashed-off, tentative, unfinished or self-cancelling; who appeared to have deliberately turned away from "strong" painting for something that seemed to constantly risk failure or inconsequence. In this collection of essays, Rubinstein expands the scope of his original article by surveying the historical and philosophical underpinnings of provisionality in recent visual art, as well as examining the works of individual artists in detail. He also engages crucial texts by Samuel Beckett and philosopher Gianni Vattimo. Re-examining several decades of painting practices, Rubinstein argues that provisionality, in all its many forms, has been both a foundational element in the history of modern art and the encapsulation of an attitude that is profoundly contemporary.
Book Synopsis Cultures of Colour by : Chris Horrocks
Download or read book Cultures of Colour written by Chris Horrocks and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colour permeates contemporary visual and material culture and affects our senses beyond the superficial encounter by infiltrating our perceptions and memories and becoming deeply rooted in thought processes that categorise and divide along culturally constructed lines. Colour exists as a cultural as well as psycho-physical phenomenon and acquires a multitude of meanings within differing historical and cultural contexts. The contributors examine how colour becomes imbued with specific symbolic and material meanings that tint our constructions of race, gender, ideal bodies, the relationship of the self to others and of the self to technology and the built environment. By highlighting the relationship of colour across media and material culture, this volume reveals the complex interplay of cultural connotations, discursive practices and socio-psychological dynamics of colour in an international context.

Book Synopsis Women Art Dealers by : Véronique Chagnon-Burke
Download or read book Women Art Dealers written by Véronique Chagnon-Burke and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-12-14 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women Art Dealers brings together fascinating case studies of galleries run by women between the 1940s and 1980s. It marks a departure from other work in the field of art markets, challenging male-dominated histories by analyzing the work of female dealers who anticipated the global model, worked to promote art across continents, and thus developed an international art market. Part 1 focuses on the women gallerists behind the promotion of modern art after World War II who participated in important research about the neo-Avant-Garde. Part 2 examines the contributions by women art dealers toward the birth of new markets – through establishing the reputation of artistic genres, such as video art and photography, and working at the forefront of advancing contemporary art. Finally, Part 3 analyzes case studies from the southern European art scene, paying fresh attention to several under-researched markets in the region like Italy and Portugal. Each chapter study provides a historiographic profile of the gallery under discussion and critical analysis is supported with a wide range of visual material including portraits of the women art dealers, photographs of the exhibitions they managed, and printed documentation like catalogues, invitations, and posters that were often used to support artists on display in experimental ways.

Book excerpt: Challenging the notion of feminism as a unified discourse, this book assembles writings that address art, film, architecture, popular culture, new media, and other visual fields from a feminist perspective. The book combines classic texts with six newly commissioned pieces. Articles are grouped into thematic sections, each introduced by the editor. Providing a framework within which to understand the shifts in feminist thinking in visual studies, as well as an overview of major feminist theories of the visual, this reader also explores how issues of race, class, nationality, and sexuality enter into debates about feminism in the field of the visual. -- book cover.
