Book Synopsis Painting Borges by : Jorge J. E. Gracia
Download or read book Painting Borges written by Jorge J. E. Gracia and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking book, Jorge J. E. Gracia explores the artistic interpretation of fiction from a philosophical perspective. Focusing on the work of Jorge Luis Borges, one of the most celebrated literary figures of Latin America, Gracia offers original interpretations of twelve of Borges's most famous stories about identity and memory, freedom and destiny, and faith and divinity. He also examines twenty-four artistic interpretations of these stories—two for each—by contemporary Argentinean and Cuban artists such as Carlos Estévez, León Ferrari, Mirta Kupferminc, Nicolás Menza, and Estela Pereda. This philosophical exploration of how artists have interpreted literature contributes to both aesthetics and hermeneutics, makes new inroads into the understanding of Borges's work, and introduces readers to two of the most vibrant artistic currents today. Color images of the artworks discussed are included.

He arrived in the United States with just a few spare belongings and his mother's diamond ring secured in a hole in one of his shoes. With a Diamond in My Shoe tells the story of Gracia's quest for identity—from his early years in Cuba and as a refugee in Miami to his formative role in institutionalizing the field of Latin American philosophy in the US academy. Committed to integrating into Anglo America without forgetting his roots, Gracia reflects on his struggles and successes as an immigrant and academic, bringing a philosopher's eye to bear on his personal and professional development as a leading Latinx scholar.

Book Synopsis Out of the Shadow by : Julie Gibbings
Download or read book Out of the Shadow written by Julie Gibbings and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2020-07-20 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guatemala’s “Ten Years of Spring” (1944–1954) began when citizens overthrew a military dictatorship and ushered in a remarkable period of social reform. This decade of progressive policies ended abruptly when a coup d’état, backed by the United States at the urging of the United Fruit Company, deposed a democratically elected president and set the stage for a period of systematic human rights abuses that endured for generations. Presenting the research of diverse anthropologists and historians, Out of the Shadow offers a new examination of this pivotal chapter in Latin American history. Marshaling information on regions that have been neglected by other scholars, such as coastlines dominated by people of African descent, the contributors describe an era when Guatemalan peasants, Maya and non-Maya alike, embraced change, became landowners themselves, diversified agricultural production, and fully engaged in electoral democracy. Yet this volume also sheds light on the period’s atrocities, such as the US Public Health Service’s medical experimentation on Guatemalans between 1946 and 1948. Rethinking institutional memories of the Cold War, the book concludes by considering the process of translating memory into possibility among present-day urban activists.
Book Synopsis Polypoetry 30 years 1987 – 2017 by : Enzo Minarelli
Download or read book Polypoetry 30 years 1987 – 2017 written by Enzo Minarelli and published by SciELO - EDUEL. This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to draw maps about Polypoetry manifestations around Europe and Americas. It gathers scholars and artists who dedicated their work for understanding the avant-garde expressions in print, sound, and visual languages, as well as to demonstrate how the experimentalism affects the world in a political and aesthetical perspective. In order to put different ideas in a framework, the first part of this book ("European Maps of Polypoetry") brings a debate about the space of Polypoetry in relationship with other avant-garde manifestations. The second one ("Intertwining voices") drives our attention to the Americas, focusing on how visual and digital poetry, music, and festivals embraced Polypoetry ideas, in a way to build a broaden art network between Europe and the Americas.
