Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive account of Carl Nielsen as a composer, viewed from the point of a musicologist with an international background and with considerable insight into Danish language and culture. Anne-Marie Reynolds examines a large portion of Carl Nielsen's songs, both in relation to his own production and in a broader cultural/historical context. This is also the first time in the reception history of Carl Nielsen that an in-depth analysis of his songs is presented. In addition to this analysis, the author provides a stylistic comparative examination of the songs, as well as two of his most important works the first symphony and the opera Masquerade. This is done to demonstrate that the opposition between Carl Nielsen as a composer of songs and Carl Nielsen as the composer of "great" works is only a seeming opposition. The book which is the result of a collaboration with Niels Krabbe, head of the Carl Nielsen Edition at The Royal Library will be published simultane

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a journey through musics that emerged at the turn of the 20th Century and were neither exclusively tonal nor serial. They fall between these labels as they are metatonal, being both with and after tonality, in their reconstruction of external codes and gestures of Common Practice music in new and idiosyncratic ways. The composers and works considered are approached from analytic, cultural, creative, and performance angles by musicologists, performers and composers to enable a deeper reading of these musics by scholars and students alike. Works include those by Frank Bridge, Ferruccio Busoni, Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, Rebecca Clarke, John Foulds, Percy Grainger, Mary Howe, Carl Nielsen, Franz Schreker, Erwin Schulhoff, Cyril Scott and Alexander Scriabin. In the process of engaging with this book the reader, will find an enrichment to their own understanding of music at the turn of the 20th Century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scandinavian art songs are a unique expression of the cultures of Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. Although these three countries are distinct from one another, their languages and cultures share many similarities. Common themes found in art and literature include a love of nature, especially of the sea, feelings of longing and melancholy, the contrast between light and dark, the extremes of the northern climate, and lively folk traditions. These shared sensibilities are reflected and expressed in a tangible way through music. Scandinavian art song has faced several challenges over the years in North America (even in the American Midwest, where descendants of Scandinavian immigrants are concentrated). But matters have changed recently with the recent expansion of diction curricula to cover languages other than English, French, German, and Italian. The primary obstacle remains practical resources for the study of art songs and lyric diction of Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. This guide remedies this problem. Scandinavian Song is a practical guide to the art songs of Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. Unlike other sources that give at best a cursory overview of lyric diction in the Scandinavian languages, this guide provides practical information, enabling teachers and students to render transcriptions of Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish texts into the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)—an absolute necessity for any study of repertoire. An extensive survey of available music, sample IPA transcriptions and translations, as well as a website link with native speakers reciting selected song texts, make this book an invaluable resource for students and professors in North American college, university, and conservatory voice programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western opera is a globalized and globalizing phenomenon and affords us a unique opportunity for exploring the concept of “orientalism,” the subject of literary scholar Edward Said’s modern classic on the topic. Nicholas Tarling’s Orientalism and the Operatic World places opera in the context of its steady globalization over the past two centuries. In this important survey, Tarling first considers how the Orient appears on the operatic stage in Britain, France, Germany, Russia, and the United States before exploring individual operas according to the region of the “Orient” in which the work is set. Throughout, Tarling offers key insights into such notable operas as George Frideric Handel’s Berenice, Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida, Giacomo Puccini’s MadamaButterfly, Pietro Mascagni’s Iris, and others. Orientalism and the Operatic World argues that any close study of the history of Western opera, in the end, fails to support the notion propounded by Said that Westerners inevitably stereotyped, dehumanized, and ultimately sought only to dominate the East through art. Instead, Tarling argues that opera is a humanizing art, one that emphasizes what humanity has in common by epic depictions of passion through the vehicle of song. Orientalism and the Operatic World is not merely for opera buffs or even first-time listeners. It should also interest historians of both the East and West, scholars of international relations, and cultural theorists.

Book excerpt: Honored by UNESCO’s Memory of the World designation, Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala’s Nueva corónica y buen gobierno (1615) rewrites Andean history in accordance with the author’s goals of reforming Spanish colonial rule in the continent-spanning viceroyalty of Peru. Housed at the Royal Library of Denmark since the 1660s, brought to international attention in 1908, and first published in facsimile in 1936, the autograph manuscript has been the topic of research in Andean ethnology and related disciplines for several decades. Now, on the eve of the 400th anniversary of Guaman Poma’s composition of the Nueva corónica, a renowned group of international scholars has focused fresh attention on the work, its author, and its times. Accomplished Andeanists such as R. Tom Zuidema, Frank Salomon, Jan Szeminski, and Regina Harrison are joined by other notable and younger scholars to explore Andean institutions and ecology, Inca governance, Spanish conquest-era history, the transformations of native and European sources in Guaman Poma’s hand, and his multilingual artistic dexterity. The relationship of the manuscript to Fray Martín de Murúa’s chronicles and a critical analysis of claims about the Nueva corónica’s authorship round out the volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When asked to describe what music means to them, most people talk about its power to express or elicit emotions. As a melody can produce a tear, tingle the spine, or energize athletes, music has a deep impact on how we experience and encounter the world. Because of the elusiveness of these musical emotions, however, little has been written about how music creates emotions and how musical emotion has changed its meaning for listeners across the last millennium. In this sweeping landmark study, author Michael Spitzer provides the first history of musical emotion in the Western world, from Gregorian chant to Beyoncé. Combining intellectual history, music studies, philosophy, and cognitive psychology, A History of Emotion in Western Music introduces current approaches to the study of emotion and formulates an original theory of how musical emotion works. Diverging from psychological approaches that center listeners' self-reports or artificial experiments, Spitzer argues that musical emotions can be uncovered in the techniques and materials of composers and performers. Together with its extensive chronicle of the historical evolution of musical style and emotion, this book offers a rich union of theory and history.

Book excerpt: Arrangement can be created in a myriad of ways, both stylistically and compositionally. In this book, I have, for pedagogical and didactic reasons, chosen arrangement on a classical/romantic basis with voicing and dissonance treatment etc. appropriate to this style idiom. The examples in the book have been prepared on the basis of three Carl Nielsen songs with accompanying chords, arranged for string quartet, wind quintet and choir, respectively. In the three arrangements, the classical accompaniment instruments, such as piano, guitar, harp and marimba, etc. are deliberately avoided, instead, the book works with melody instruments. This is done in order to be able to work in depth with the challenges that arise when a melody instrument has to accompany another instrument. The methods and techniques used throughout the book are based on my experiences as a composer and as a teacher of music theory and arrangement at the conservatory for many years. Through analysis and hands-on work, the reader's understanding and craftsmanship are built up in arrangement. The hands-on work is illustrated with numerous examples I have prepared to give a glimpse into the "compositional workshop", and the reader is guided through the compositional process, including the problems that arise as well as testing possible solutions. In this way, he/she can develop and refine his/her craft, in the intense work with both the detail and the broad lines of the form. An important part of acquiring skills in composition and arrangement is listening, analyzing and trying out, and then listening, analyzing and trying out again. For this reason, an audio file in NotePerformer has been created for all relevant examples in the book, which can be heard/downloaded at: www.martinlohse.dk/arrangement/sound.zip
