Apparently this hat was several sizes too large, and Carlton smiled as he thought of the preceding generations that might have worn it before it had descended to its present owner. A celluloid collar adorned the neck of the new boy, his shirtsleeves, without cuffs, extended several inches below those of his coat, and there was a gap of several inches between the shoes he wore and the bottom of his trousers. Tall, plainly not less than six feet in height, and yet so slight that his tallness was accentuated, the new boy evidently was one certain to have experiences that he would remember long, before he had been enrolled in the school many days. Carlton Hall, faultlessly clad, self-possessed, familiar with the ways of the world as well as with the school ways, a senior now that his preceding three years as a student had been safely passed, was the embodiment of self-possession and good nature.
