Book excerpt: Most of the HIV/AIDS caregivers in Kenya live in various parts of the country and share many of the trials and tribulations associated with providing care to someone suffering from a terminal illness. Some have been forced into the role due to the death of their love one, while others may have voluntarily taken on the responsibility on a firm belief that the care they provide will make a difference. The experiences shared in this book capture some of day-to-day political, social, economic, cultural challenges and obstacles encountered by the HIV/AIDS caregivers in Nairobi, Kenya. Caregiver challenges are reviewed and recommendations are offered on the way forward. It also explores the role of the church and international social work in addressing international issues.

The normative roles of women extend from reproductive role to the raising of children and caring for sick family members. These roles are very unique and are dictated by culture, religion and beliefs. Despite these, their contributions in caregiving remain unrecognized except by the beneficiaries. Caregivers of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) experience high level of burden due to the expanded role and inadequate preparation for the caregiver,Äôs duty. A descriptive cross-sectional research design was utilized to elicit data from 260 participants in Calabar municipality, Nigeria. Caring for PLWHA is an exceptional service due to exacerbation of symptoms and co-morbidities peculiar to terminal phase of HIV. The study revealed gender inequalities in burden levels. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In sub-Saharan Africa, older people make up a relatively small fraction of the total population and are supported primarily by family and other kinship networks. They have traditionally been viewed as repositories of information and wisdom, and are critical pillars of the community but as the HIV/AIDS pandemic destroys family systems, the elderly increasingly have to deal with the loss of their own support while absorbing the additional responsibilities of caring for their orphaned grandchildren. Aging in Sub-Saharan Africa explores ways to promote U.S. research interests and to augment the sub-Saharan governments' capacity to address the many challenges posed by population aging. Five major themes are explored in the book such as the need for a basic definition of "older person," the need for national governments to invest more in basic research and the coordination of data collection across countries, and the need for improved dialogue between local researchers and policy makers. This book makes three major recommendations: 1) the development of a research agenda 2) enhancing research opportunity and implementation and 3) the translation of research findings.

Book excerpt: This book vividly describes family care in HIV/AIDS through the lived experiences of caregivers and care receivers. It contributes to our knowledge not only because of the contemporary relevance of family caregiving, but also because of its focus on HIV/AIDS which, being a relatively new disease, is little understood yet poses unique challenges due to its stigmatising, long-drawn, debilitating and terminal nature. Based on a study conducted in Mumbai, Family Care in HIV/AIDS captures the lived experiences of 10 caregivers and seven care receivers belonging to diverse socio-economic groups and traditional as well as non-traditional family settings. Overall, the book provides valuable insights into a range of important issues related to caregiving in family settings while identifying areas for intervention and further research. In addition, it overcomes many gaps identified in the substantive area of family care by Western researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HIV/AIDS poses unique challenges and creates unique needs for the care provider, whether that person is a professional, family member, or a friend. This book is designed to examine the major issues affecting those caregivers. The book begins with a thorough survey of the HIV/AIDS caregiving context. Then some of the major stresses in HIV/AIDS caregiving are identified. The special issues and challenges confronted by female, African-American, and gay caregivers are then reviewed. The next essay examines how the caregiver can approach questions from both clients' and patients' perspectives and the caregiver's sero-status. After focusing on the key issues of spirituality in HIV/AIDS care, the issue of multiple loss, and the grieving process, the book concludes with a synthesis and suggestions for new perspectives on the caregiving process. The collection is intended to be a major resource for professional caregivers as well as family members and loved ones.

Book excerpt: The International Christian AIDS Network (ICAN) seeks to promote a non-judgmental approach and, by also involving churches, acts as an advocate for those infected with and affected by HIV or AIDS (www.icannetwork.org). ICAN produced this manual to support programs that care for the caregivers: people working in hospices caring for the dying, family members caring for their sick and dying relatives, home-based caregivers, grandparents caring for orphans and other vulnerable children, heads of child-headed households, and many others. Ricus Dullaert, executive director of ICAN, is an HIV and AIDS consultant in St. Joseph's Care and Support Centre at Sizanani, South Africa.
