Book excerpt: The study was designed to obtain information that would be of value to secondary school personnel who provide career counseling and guidance to high school students preparing for post-secondary education, training, and employment. The study attempted to determine if African-American, Anglo, and Hispanic students varied significantly on characteristics that could potentially inhibit career decision-making. The characteristics investigated included career indecision and self-efficacy. Participants included 74 sophomore and senior students from three rural high schools in South Central Texas. Two research questions were investigated to determine if there were significant differences among Anglo, African-American, and Hispanic students on measures of career indecision and self-efficacy. A third research question was investigated to determine if significant differences existed on measures of career indecision and self-efficacy by ethnicity, gender, and grade level, as well as for the interaction of ethnicity, gender, and grade level. A supplementary analysis of the three research questions was conducted including school as an independent variable. The Career Decision Scale and Career Decision Self-Efficacy Scale were administered to the participants and the data were analyzed with ANOVA and MANOVA statistical tests. No significant differences were obtained for the three research questions. When the school variable was included in the data analysis, significant main effects differences were found for grade level on self-efficacy and for school on career indecision. The combination of ethnic groups, genders, and grade levels indicated significant differences for the interaction of gender and grade level on self-efficacy and for the interaction of ethnicity and gender on self-efficacy. Middle to high levels of career indecision were reported by 90% of the seniors and 79% of all students in the study. The researcher recommended that career interventions would be valuable to sophomores and seniors in helping them prepare for post-secondary career choices.

Book excerpt: The exploration of African American adolescents' career development has gained increasing attention in light of literature describing various barriers impacting their educational and career development and goals. Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) was used as a theoretical framework to help shed light on the contextual factors that influence their career development. This study examined the relationship between career decision self-efficacy, ethnic identity, academic self-concept, and achievement of African American high school students. The sample consisted of African American high school students enrolled in Upward Bound programs. Through quantitative methods, this study adds to the career development literature by including ethnic identity, academic self-concept, and achievement as combined factors that may impact the career development of African American adolescents. Specifically, the results of this study assists teachers, administrators, parents, and school counselors with understanding career decision self-efficacy as it relates to ethnic identity, academic self-concept, achievement, and demographic variables. This study also provides implications for career counseling interventions in schools designed to assist with career development.

Book excerpt: This volume presents the single most comprehensive source of knowledge on the career development of racial and ethnic minorities. In so doing, it serves as a resource to graduate students learning about career development and career counseling, counselors and psychologists providing career counseling to racial and ethnic minorities, and psychologists and counselors doing research on the career development of these diverse groups. In recognition of the value of both culture-specific and culture-general information about the vocational psychology of racial and ethnic minorities in the United States, the book has a dual focus. The first eight chapters are devoted to culture-specific information about career development and vocational behavior. The final two chapters synthesize and integrate the materials presented in the eight culture-specific chapters. The text has been divided into three sections. The first section focuses on career theory and research with racial and ethnic minorities. It consists of a review of the relevance and utility of various career theories and models from mainstream vocational psychology to our understanding of the vocational behavior and career development of racial and ethnic minorities -- African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, and American Indians. These chapters also summarize other theories from ethnic minority psychology that add to our understanding of minority career development. Finally, they review the existing empirical literature on the career development of these groups and provide a critique of this literature with recommendations for future research. The second section focuses on assessment and intervention with racial and ethnic minorities. The inclusion of the assessment dimension is very important because assessment is such a large and significant component of the career counseling process with these groups. The chapter authors offer guidelines and recommendations for providing career interventions with racial and ethnic minorities. In presenting these guidelines, they also address some of the cultural factors unique to each group that may serve either as facilitators or as inhibitors in the career counseling process. The third section includes commentaries, suggestions, reactions, and syntheses of the previous sections from scholars in the field of vocational psychology. These authors identify and examine the common principles, problems, and themes running across the chapters, and offer suggestions for advancing the field of racial and ethnic minority vocational psychology. This book will become both a valuable source of current information about the vocational psychology of racial and ethnic minorities as well as an inspiration for future research into the career development and vocational behavior of these culturally different individuals.

Book excerpt: The study examined the short-term effects of a career education intervention on participant's self-reported career self-efficacy, while also considering gender, income levels, mothers' education levels, and treatment condition as potential moderators of the participants' career-self efficacy. Sited in a rural Texas community and utilizing a posttest only design, the study used the Career Decision Self-Efficacy Scale -- Short Form as the posttest instrument to measure participants' self-reported career self-efficacy levels. Demographic information was obtained from the students and parents who agreed to participant [sic] in the study. A 4-way ANOVA was conducted to determine the main effect for the independent variables and the interaction effect between the independent variables that would indicate a moderating effect from any demographic variables. Results indicated that the only statistically significant variable was the treatment (intervention) itself; no other variables indicated a statistical significance, most likely due to the limited variability within the sample regarding ethnicity, mothers' education levels, and socioeconomic status. In addition, the five subscales of the posttest instrument were examined to determine practical application for the study sample. The Planning subscale was the only subscale that yielded statistical significance. Most students expressed already knowing their goals for the future, but indicated they needed assistance with planning for those goals. Based on these and additional results, implications and recommendations include working with this population to focus more efforts on planning, and future similar studies with larger samples that contain more variability to better examine the interaction between the independent variables. More importantly, a recommendation is made for future research with rural areas populations that contain little variability.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to determine if there is a significant relationship between (a) career self-efficacy and vocational interest, (b) career self-efficacy and career consideration, and (c) vocational interest and career consideration among African-American female adolescents. African American female students from two comprehensive high schools and one magnet high school in a large metropolitan school district were selected for study participation. To evaluate the relationship of level of career self-efficacy, degree of vocational interest, and range of career consideration, the investigator modified three career assessment questionnaires. The study utilized Pearson product-moment correlation for testing three null hypotheses at the.05 level. Conclusions were: (a) On an aggregate level, there is not a significant relationship between career self-efficacy and vocational interest among African American female adolescents. However, career self-efficacy is related to vocational interest when segmented into gender-neutral occupations, male dominated occupations, and occupations that require postsecondary education. (b) On an aggregate level, there is not a significant relationship between career self-efficacy and career consideration among African American female adolescents. However, career self-efficacy is related to career consideration when segmented into gender-neutral occupations, male dominated occupations, and occupations that require postsecondary education. (c) On both an aggregate level and individually all vocational interest and career consideration categories (female, male, gender-neutral, secondary, and postsecondary) were significantly correlated among African American female adolescents.

Book excerpt: The Latino population in the United States is growing rapidly along with the number of Latino college entrants. However, a significantly smaller percentage of Latino college students go on to graduate with four-year degrees when compared to other racial/ethnic groups. Career decision-making self-efficacy (CDMSE) has been identified as an important variable to consider given its empirically supported associations with academic persistence and lower college dropout rates. While research has supported the academic and career benefits of higher CDMSE levels, gaps in the literature exist regarding CDMSE and sociocultural factors among Latino university students. Utilizing Social Cognitive Career Theory as the theoretical framework, this study explored multiple sociocultural variables (i.e., acculturation, college generational status, and cultural congruity) and their associations with CDMSE among a sample of 260 Latino college students at a Hispanic-Serving Institution and Land Grant University in the southwestern United States. Regression analyses confirmed that both Anglo-oriented acculturation and cultural congruity significantly and positively predicted CDMSE. A hierarchical regression analysis determined that cultural congruity contributed unique and significant variance in CDMSE after accounting for the influences of acculturation and college generational status. A t-test analysis found no significant differences in CDMSE scores between first-generation and continuing generation college students. Implications for counseling psychology, study limitations, and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Projected increases of Hispanics in the U.S. and their contribution to the labor force have created concerns for the future of the U.S. labor market due to their low educational attainment rates. While the proportion of women in the workforce is projected to increase, Mexican American women specifically are underrepresented at all levels of education and overrepresented in low-paying occupations. Due to the notion that the quality of the U.S. labor market will depend on this group's education and job skills, the career development of Hispanics has become a salient issue in research literature. This study sought to expand a theoretical model of career and achievement motivation by testing its generalizability to Mexican American women. The principal purpose of this study was to investigate the contribution of mastery motivation and career aspirations as predictors of nontraditional career self-efficacy in Mexican American adolescent women, and the moderating effect of ethnic identity on these relationships. Participants in this study consisted of 121 adolescent high school females from two public high schools in south Texas. Participants responded to each of the instruments: Occupational Self-Efficacy Scale, Career Aspiration Scale, Work and Family Orientation Questionnaire, and Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure, followed by a demographic questionnaire. The data indicated that while there was a significant relationship between Career Aspirations and non-traditional career self-efficacy (NTCSE), the addition of Ethnic Identity as a moderator did not add to the strength of the relationship. Data indicated a positive, significant relationship between mastery motivation and non-traditional career self-efficacy (NTCSE) as well as evidence of a significant moderation effect of Ethnic Identity between Mastery Motivation and NTCSE. Findings suggest that there are other factors that may be impeding the actualization of these student's aspirations. While their aspirations are high, their belief in themselves to successfully accomplish the education requirements and job duties for non-traditional careers is less than their aspirations. Due to the age of this sample, it is possible that ethnic identity may not be a salient factor influencing their self-efficacy, but instead may be a dominant cultural worldview. Limitations of this study and future research directions are discussed.
