Book excerpt: Abstract: Dental hygienists with varying entry-level degrees can attain many of the same jobs within the profession of dental hygiene. Limited data are available regarding the types ofjobs dental hygienists with varying entry-level degrees obtain throughout their careers. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the entry-level degree (s), pursuit of advanced education, and career paths of dental hygienists. Determining the factors that affect career paths can provide insight to past, present, and future; including trends, patterns, and goals of the profession. A survey was developed and administered to a random sample of dental hygienists holding a license in the state of Ohio. In general, no differences in the career paths of graduates with varying entry-level degrees were found. No relationship between entry-level dental hygiene degree and highest degree; or between highest degree and profession attrition (leaving the profession due to lack of satisfaction or to pursue an non- Dental Hygiene job) were identified. Overall, the perceived preparedness of all entry- level degree graduates was the same (p=.14). The presence of a mentoring experience before or after graduation was shown to be a factor in the pursuit of advanced education. With the lack of a defmitive career ladder within the profession and poorly delineated curriculum guidelines between the varying entry-level programs, progressive attempts must be made to secure the integrity of the profession. It is the responsibility of both dental hygiene professionals and educational institutions to advocate for this structure by focusing on cohesive academic and career advising, comprehensive dental hygiene curricula (clinical and non-clinical aspects), and mentoring.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "With the increase in the number of dental hygiene schools, and decline in graduating dentists, the potential for an excess supply of dental hygienists could result in increased difficulty for dental hygienists to gain employment. Using a quantitative research design in the form of a cross sectional, Likert style survey, this study targeted desirable employability characteristics of dental hygienists by dental employers. The sample was randomly selected from five regions in the US. Each participant was sent three emails containing an introductory letter, consent form, and survey link with a response rate of 5.70% (N=53). Data was analyzed using frequency statistics. Demographically the majority of respondents were Caucasian, male dentists, with an average age of 56.75. Geographically, all five regions responded to the survey, with the majority (81.13%) from a population greater than 50,000. The average number of dental hygienists employed in a practice was 2.11. Over one third, 33.96%, of respondents state they would prefer a dental hygienist with a baccalaureate degree, 52.83% would consider paying a higher salary for this level of education, and 66.04% would hire a new graduate with limited clinical experience. Interpersonal skills showed the highest frequency for the most important or important ranking. The majority also identified the remaining characteristics of level of education, leadership skills, appearance, critical thinking skills, salary, and clinical experience to be very important to somewhat important. Results are in direct correlation with the American Dental Hygienists' Association 2011-2015 Strategic Plan, Commission on Dental Accreditation standards for accreditation for dental hygiene programs, and assumptions of the primary investigator"--Document.

It offers a clear approach to science and theory, a step-by-step guide to core dental hygiene procedures, and realistic scenarios to help you develop skills in decision-making. Comprehensive coverage addresses the need-to-know issues in dental hygiene — from the rationale behind the need for dental hygiene care through assessment, diagnosis, care planning, implementation, pain and anxiety control, the care of individuals with special needs, and practice management. Step-by-step procedure boxes list the equipment required and the steps involved in performing key procedures. Rationales for the steps are provided in printable PDFs online. Critical Thinking exercises and Scenario boxes encourage application and problem solving, and help prepare students for the case-based portion of the NBDHE. Client Education boxes list teaching points that the dental hygienist may use to educate clients on at-home daily oral health care. High-quality and robust art program includes full-color illustrations and clinical photographs as well as radiographs to show anatomy, complex clinical procedures, and modern equipment. Legal, Ethical, and Safety Issues boxes address issues related to risk prevention and management. Expert authors Michele Darby and Margaret Walsh lead a team of international contributors consisting of leading dental hygiene instructors, researchers, and practitioners. NEW chapters on evidence-based practice, the development of a professional portfolio, and palliative care provide research-based findings and practical application of topics of interest in modern dental hygiene care. NEW content addresses the latest research and best practices in attaining clinical competency, including nutrition and community health guidelines, nonsurgical periodontal therapy, digital imaging, local anesthesia administration, pharmacology, infection control, and the use of the electronic health record (EHR) within dental hygiene practice. NEW photographs and illustrations show new guidelines and equipment, as well as emerging issues and trends. NEW!
