Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work affects most of us at some point in our lives. Work can be a source of growth, connection, and purpose, but too often it is a source of feeling aimless, bullied or manipulated. Sometimes it comes through overarching ambition, striving to climb up the corporate ladder only to find it is leaning in the wrong direction. There are degrees of emotional and physical suffering when we feel anger, misery and unhappiness with unenlightened work. The Enlightenment of Work is about ending that suffering. This book is essential for anyone wishing to: Transform your suffering at work: Suffering can come in many ways. It can come through feeling aimless and bored where the only reason for being there is to collect a salary each month. It can come through stress, overwork and burnout. This book offers a simple philosophy: suffering happens - but we can transform that suffering. Realise their innate gifts, talents and purpose: Most work disconnects us from knowing our authentic self - our essence or soul. Trust your courage, ideas, intuition, and discover your true self. Reclaim their time: Time is your most precious resource and one you cannot afford to waste. However, many of us work in busy environments that leave little time for real thinking or reflection, or for doing anything very new or interesting. Busy and idle minds can get locked into different forms of anxiety about the past and the future. The changing world of work demands emotional and spiritual intelligence. No one has to stay with work that oppresses the spirit. This new world is about choice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians of the intellectual and literary culture of the Enlightenment have recognised the importance of Andrew Millar (1705-68). His publisher's imprint adorned the title-pages of the most important works of the eighteenth century, in fiction, poetry, drama, medicine, and philosophy. This is the first extended study of Millar's commercial and social role in the commissioning, production, circulation, and consumption of Enlightenment literature in Britain. Providing a new intervention on the culture of Enlightenment this study shows how and why Millar provoked major controversies through his role as friend, patron, and publisher to great rivals in the republic of letters. An unprecedent analysis of publishing and authorship at the intersection of politics, business, visual arts, moral debate, and literary self-fashioning, this study of Andrew Millar also shows the degree to which Scottish identity shaped a professional career within London's rise as the cosmopolitan centre of learning and trade at the heart of the British empire. This volume presents hundreds of previously unpublished letters that passed between Millar and his literary network, and includes the 52 letters that passed between Millar and David Hume, the majority of which have been edited for the first time since 1931. This is a major contribution to the material and intellectual worlds that defined the culture of Enlightenment in Britain during the eighteenth century, casting new light in the history of publishing and authorship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an idea that just might save the world. It is that science, properly understood, provides us with the methodological key to the salvation of humanity. A version of this idea can be found in the works of Karl Popper. Famously, Popper argued that science cannot verify theories but can only refute them, and this is how science makes progress. Scientists are forced to think up something better, and it is this, according to Popper, that drives science forward. But Nicholas Maxwell finds a flaw in this line of argument. Physicists only ever accept theories that are unified – theories that depict the same laws applying to the range of phenomena to which the theory applies – even though many other empirically more successful disunified theories are always available. This means that science makes a questionable assumption about the universe, namely that all disunified theories are false. Without some such presupposition as this, the whole empirical method of science breaks down.By proposing a new conception of scientific methodology, which can be applied to all worthwhile human endeavours with problematic aims, Maxwell argues for a revolution in academic inquiry to help humanity make progress towards a better, more civilized and enlightened world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience a profound shift in consciousness, one meditative step at a time. A Year to Enlightenment is a first-of-its-kind, holistic approach to a complete meditation experience. It is divided into 365 “days”—each composed of an Insight, a Reflection, and a Meditation—which will help awaken your intuition, insight, and inner knowledge to reach that state sought after by mystics and seekers throughout the ages: enlightenment. Moving gradually from simple relaxation into the deepest, most profound areas of meditation and spirituality, A Year to Enlightenment encourages you to read only one page at a time, practicing a single technique until a personal insight arises. Only then do you turn the page and go on to the next, as your own insights become your personal teacher. Though former monk E. Raymond Rock uses Buddhist meditation principles, A Year to Enlightenment is nondenominational. People of all religions and at any level of spiritual development can use it to: Awaken natural creativity and begin your new life Become more loving, generous, and tolerant Show courage in trying situations Find meaning and significance in your life Change aspects of your life and personality for the better Reduce stress and worry Eliminate fear and uncertainty Find acceptance and love Feel better mentally and physically Deepen and improve your relationships with others Reach your maximum potential The most revolutionary aspect of this practical book is not how it awakens each practitioner’s unique intuition, but how it uses that intuitive event as a signal to move forward. Those who follow the day-by-day program can find an endless stream of love to enrich their lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely book explores how Buddhist-inflected thought has enriched contemporary American literature. Continuing the work begun in The Emergence of Buddhist American Literature, editors John Whalen-Bridge and Gary Storhoff and the volume's contributors turn to the most recent developments, revealing how mid-1970s through early twenty-first-century literature has employed Buddhist texts, principles, and genres. Just as Buddhism underwent indigenization when it moved from India to Tibet, to China, and to Japan, it is now undergoing that process in the United States. While some will find literary creativity in this process, others lament a loss of authenticity. The book begins with a look at the American reception of Zen and at the approaches to Dharma developed by African Americans. The work of consciously Buddhist and Buddhist-influenced writers such as Don DeLillo, Gary Snyder, and Jackson Mac Low is analyzed, and a final section of the volume contains interviews and discussions with contemporary Buddhist writers. These include an interview with Gary Snyder; a discussion with Maxine Hong Kingston and Charles Johnson; and discussions of competing American and Asian values at the Beat- and Buddhist-inspired writing program at Naropa University with poets Joanne Kyger, Reed Bye, Keith Abbott, Andrew Schelling, and Elizabeth Robinson.

Book excerpt: Cognastro is a symbol of the things we bring upon ourselves. Created in the unbearable fires of the glass maker, accompanied by the pleading incantation of Kabbalistic priests; he stands dispassionately by, watching—while we undergo the catharsis of our own destiny. Conrad Lucas is a quiet courageous man, who, like Cognostro, was seared by the not so different fires of wartime experiences that disgraced and humiliated him. Surprised by the mysterious death of an old friend, he becomes enmeshed in a revealing adventure. The police announce that Enrico Monteverdi, a shop-keep, and Meiken Pietry, a dancer half his age, were poisoned by her jealous husband. The police shut the case against Carl Pietry, because in 1924 America, insanity caused by infidelity is a reasonable defense for a crime of passion. The story was sensationalized by the media, and in Conrad's view, maliciously distorted. Intimate knowledge about his friend Enrico, from a far–off time, reveals that Enrico could not consummate a love relationship. Conrad Lucas resolves to expose the truth, but what exactly is the truth? How is it that his old friend, a purveyor of fine glass, could become so tragically entwined with a delicate ballerina? Thus Conrad plunges into a private investigation of the case. The reader must draw his own conclusions, for it seems, truth is in the eye of the beholder. Conrad's odyssey leads to the enrichment of his own life, and the expiation of burdens. Only Cognostro could tell you what those were, and how they are not unlike our own—those that we must carry to our graves.
