Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Participation in athletics at both the recreational and competitive levels has grown enormously over the last decade, and now involves a substantial segment of the population of many countries, particularly those in Europe and North America. This change in the life-style of many individuals has been accompanied by the desire and necessity on the part of physicians to define the consequences of chronic athletic training and competition to the participant. Coincident with the of public interest in sporting competition has been the evolution and growth development of new non-invasive technologies in cardiology (such as M-mode and two-dimensional echocardiography and radionuclide angiography) which have permitted investigators to study directly and more precisely the morphology and function of the heart and cardiovascular system. Hence, over the past several years our knowledge has been greatly enhanced with regard to the features of the normal 'athlete heart' and the relationship of athletic conditioning to preexistent cardiovascular disease, as well as the causes of sudden death in athletes. The present treatise on 'Sports cardiology: Exercise in Health and Cardio vascular Disease' is an impressive reference document which is also timely. It fulfills an important role in summarizing most of the available data that has been accumulated over the last 10 years in a large number of athletes participating in a variety of different sports. Drs. I. Bekaert and R.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sudden death in athletes is a global problem. Although it is a relatively rare phenomenon (1/100,000 persons), when it does occur, it is often as an incomprehensible event. In fact, it strikes subjects who presumably should be much healthier than the general population. In the previous 20 years, many authors have studied this problem in an attempt to understand the causes and prevent these events, and it has been determined that, in the vast majority of cases, athletes who die suddenly have an underlying heart disease (arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, coronary anomalies, channelopathies, etc.). In most cases these diseases do not produce major symptoms and do not preclude sports activity even at the highest levels, although they do increase the incidence of sudden death. How to discover these diseases in asymptomatic athletes is a hotly debated issue. In particular, there is controversy as to whether all athletes should undergo detailed medical screening, including electrocardiogram, or whether the costs of this screening are too high in relation to the event incidence. The purpose of this book is to accurately analyze the causes of sudden death in athletes and to provide cardiologists and sports physicians with useful tips on how to identify at-risk individuals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mastery of ECG interpretation is achieved not only by pattern recognition, but equally importantly, by a clear, practical understanding of how electricity moves through the heart and how disruption of that movement manifests itself via ECG tracings. ECGs for Beginners, written by one of the world's most respected electrophysiologists with over 40 years experience of training clinicians, will provide cardiology and electrophysiology trainees with an easy to follow, step-by-step guide to the topic, thus enabling them to both understand and interpret ECG readings in order to to best manage their patients. Packed with over 250 high-quality ECG tracings, as well as management algorithms and key points throughout, every chapter also contains self-assessment questions, allowing the reader to test themselves on what they've just learnt. All kinds of arrhythmias will be covered, as well as morphological abnormalities such as atrial and ventricular problems. Importantly, normal ECG readings will be presented alongside abnormal readings, to best demonstrate how and why abnormalities occur. ECGs for Beginners is an essential purchase for all cardiology and electrophysiology trainees, as well as being a handy refresher guide for the experienced physician.

Book excerpt: A fresh assessment of ischemic electrocardiography, its prognostic correlations, and the concepts and principles that underlie its use The electrocardiogram (ECG) is integral to the accurate diagnosis and optimal management of patients with ischemic heart disease. Picking up a wide range of indicators, it provides valuable prognostic data to cardiologists and emergency medicine specialists for whom ECG readings are a trusted and everyday resource. Electrocardiography in Ischemic Heart Disease is designed to help enhance such clinicians' understanding of ECG recordings and their relationship to anatomical patterns of myocardial ischemia, thereby facilitating the continued improvement of patient care. For this new edition, the book's globally recognized team of authors has revised and expanded the original text to bring it up to date with the cardiology of today. Practical explanations of electrophysiological mechanisms, ischemic insults, and arterial occlusions are placed in the context of the ECG's day-to-day use, while full-color images illustrate core concepts in a vivid and instructive manner. This essential guide: Demonstrates correlations between ECG recordings and anatomical patterns of myocardial ischemia Covers STEMI, special forms of NSTEMI, and Q waves Describes electrocardiographic patterns of ischemia, injury, and infarction Includes full-color images Explores advanced techniques such as contrast-enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance Electrocardiography in Ischemic Heart Disease is an indispensable resource for both trainee and practicing cardiologists, emergency medicine physicians, and any clinicians involved in the diagnosis and management of ischemic heart disease.
