Book excerpt: The previously reported catalytic reaction between CO2, H2, and (CH3)2NH to yield N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) has been found to produce also trimethylamine (TMA) in the presence of several Ru, Os, Rh, Ir and Pt complexes. In separate experiments, the hydrogenation of DMF, catalyzed by the same or other complexes, also gave TMA. Thus, evidence is presented for the overall catalytic reduction of CO2 the the methyl group ( -CH3, incorporated in TMA). Keywords: Carbon dioxide, Hydrogenation, Homogeneous catalysis, N, N Dimethylformamide, Ethyl radicals.

Book excerpt: The series Topics in Current Chemistry Collections presents critical reviews from the journal Topics in Current Chemistry organized in topical volumes. The scope of coverage is all areas of chemical science including the interfaces with related disciplines such as biology, medicine and materials science. The goal of each thematic volume is to give the non-specialist reader, whether in academia or industry, a comprehensive insight into an area where new research is emerging which is of interest to a larger scientific audience. Each review within the volume critically surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years are presented using selected examples to illustrate the principles discussed. The coverage is not intended to be an exhaustive summary of the field or include large quantities of data, but should rather be conceptual, concentrating on the methodological thinking that will allow the non-specialist reader to understand the information presented. Contributions also offer an outlook on potential future developments in the field.

Book excerpt: During the oil embargo, in the winter 1973174, parts of Western Europe present ed an almost war-like aspect on Saturdays and Sundays: no traffic on the high ways, no crowds at ski resorts and other weekend entertainment places, no gaso line at the pumps. Living and teaching then in that part of the world, and discussing the situa tion with our students, we came to the conclusion that it would be timely to col lect the fine chemistry already known at the time in the field of conversion of coal to gasoline and other chemicals, and by this way help to draw the attention to this important alternative to crude oil. The idea of this book was born. The energy shock of the early seventies has been healthy and of great conse quences in chemistry. Large amounts of research money have been put to work since, and our knowledge of the possibilities and limitations of coal-based chemistry has increased enormously. During several years it appeared inap propriate to write a monograph about a topic which was in the midst of such an impetuous development. Nevertheless, we collected, and critically selected, the upcoming work as it appeared in the literature, and also tried to provide some modest input ourselves. Now, ten years later, the situation seems to be settled to a certain degree.

Book excerpt: A platinum complex,?Pt2(u-PCP)3 (PCP = (C6H5)2PCH2P(C6H6)2, catalyzes the synthesis of N, N-dimehtylformamide (DMF) from CO2, H2 and (CH3)2NH in toluene solution at 25-100C and total pressures of 0.96-114 atm of the three reactant gases. The turnover numbers, DMF/complex/day, range from 9 at 25C and 0.96 atm to 1375 at 100 C and 114 atm. The homogeneous synthesis of DMF is readily reversible by either increasing the temperature, lowering the pressure of the reactants, or both, during the catalytic reaction. The formation of DMF appears to be dependent on the partial pressures of the individual reactants. Separate reactions of the three reactants with (Pt2(u-PCP)3) at ambient conditions (25C, 700 torr) give adducts with (CH3)2NH, but not with CO2 or H2. Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, Hydrogenation, Homogeneous Catalysis, N, N dimethylformamide, Platinum, Phosphine Complex.

Book excerpt: Formamide, HC(O)NH2, is catalytically synthesized from Carbon dioxide, Hydrogen and Ammonia in homogeneous toluene or alcohol solutions mediated by Ir(Cl)(CO)(Ph3P)2. The same iridium compound is used in the catalytic hydrogenation of neat formamide which leads to methane and N-methylformamides. The latter overall reaction is complicated due to the concurrent thermal decomposition of formamide yielding carbon black, NH3, Carbon monoxide, CO2, and water. The various possible steps in this complex catalytic system are briefly examined. Keywords: Trans-chlorocarbonylbis(triphenylphosphine)iridium. (aw).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any mention of the "greenhouse effect" tends to ignite controversy. While the rising atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases-especially carbon dioxide- are certainly among the most pressing issues today, theoretical and perceived consequences have been subject to conjecture and misinformation. That raging debate has obscured an important fact: scientists and engineers are hard at work on methods to reduce CO2 emissions, and devise practical methods for their remediation. Greenhouse Gas Carbon Dioxide Mitigation: Science and Technology sheds light on the most recent advancements, documented by two of the world's leading researchers on CO2. Aware of the complexity and still-unknown factors behind climatic change, the authors consider the need to make CO2 mitigation viable for both environmental and economic gain. To that end, Professor Halmann offers new insights into interesting chemical pathways for the conversion of CO2 to useful products. Steinberg adds real-life engineering solutions, applicable to heavy CO2-producing industrial processes, and improving efficiency of energy conversion. Exciting theories and pilot projects are also testing the potential for CO2 utilization, conversion, reduction, and disposal. Greenhouse Gas Carbon Dioxide Mitigation: Science and Technology reports on the use of biomass, such as ocean fertilization and "energy farms," to put CO2 to practical and safe use. Professional and academic readers involved with CO2 research will find Greenhouse Gas Carbon Dioxide Mitigation: Science and Technology an invaluable roadmap for information and inspiration-a way to move beyond argument, and into action.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Homogeneous hydrogenation is one of the most thoroughly studied fields of homogeneous catalysis. The results of these studies have proved to be most important for an understanding of the underlying principles of the activation of small molecules by transition metal complexes. During the past three decades homogeneous hydrogenation has found widespread application in organic chemistry, including the production of important pharmaceuticals, especially where a sophisticated degree of selectivity is required. This volume presents a general account of the main principles and applications of homogeneous hydrogenation by transition metal complexes. Special attention is devoted to the mechanisms by which these processes occur, and the role of the recently discovered complexes of molecular hydrogen is described. Sources of hydrogen, other than H2, are also considered (transfer hydrogenation). The latest achievements in highly stereoselective hydrogenations have made possible many new applications in organic synthesis. These applications are documented by giving details of the reduction of important unsaturated substrates (alkenes, alkynes, aldehydes and ketones, nitrocompounds, etc.). Hydrogenation in biphasic and phase transfer catalyzed systems is also described. Finally, a discussion of the biochemical routes of H2 activation highlights the similarities and differences in performing hydrogenation in both natural and synthetic systems. For researchers working in the fields of homogeneous catalysis, especially in areas such as pharmaceuticals, plastics and fine chemicals.
