Book excerpt: A two-dimensional numerical sea breeze model that includes radiation and heat budget physics is used to study sea breeze circulations affected by South Florida surface and cloud conditions. Sensitivity experiments show major differences in the intensities and inland penetrations that result from prescribed distributions of surface and cirrus cloud properties. A case study experiment for July 16, 1975, provides a measure of the importance of surface and cumulus cloud properties that were observed or deduced for this one day. Significant differences exist between the model version using a surface heat budget formulation and the version using prescribed thermal forcing. The strength of the sea breeze predicted with the heat budget formulation decreases with increasing initial basic state wind speeds, while the opposite effect occurs with thermal forcing. Soil moisture is the dominant controlling surface property, followed by albedo and thermal inertia. Cirrus clouds can prevent the evolution of the sea breeze when the geometric thickness of cirrus exceeds 2 km. A case study demonstrates the importance of cumulus cloud shielding of the surface from solar radiation. The mesoscale sea breeze convergence zone is seen to evolve adjacent to organized cloud fields, but not necessarily coincident with them. This is an important consideration when sea breeze models are verified with observed cloud fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrometeorology presents an introduction to relevant topics in the interdisciplinary fields of hydrology and meteorology. This book is one of the few books aiming to provide a balance between aspects of meteorological and hydrological processes. The transfer of energy and water between the land surface and lower atmosphere within the hydrological cycle is addressed followed by a description of the nature of precipitation, and how it is formed. Forecasting precipitation is reviewed on all scales, and the range of rainfall-runoff models and coastal surge models and forecasts (including tsunamis) which have been, and are being, used are discussed. The mechanisms of snow, ice (glacier, sea and tundra), evaporation and transpiration, how drought occurs and the representation of wind are described. How rainfall (including radar measurements) and river flow information is gathered and analysed (including, frequency analysis, Probable Maximum Precipitation and Flood) are presented. Satellite measurements of precipitation are discussed. Examples of major past floods and droughts are given. Past and future climate change, which is included, underpins the importance of hydro-meteorological processes. The structure of the general circulation of the atmosphere and how it influences weather and climate including the Hadley, Ferrel and Polar cells, the Trade winds and the El Nino, is outlined. Finally, the influence of urban areas on rainfall formation, dealing with urban drainage and air quality are described. Each chapter ends with one or two specific points as appendices, elements discussed in the chapter and a list of sample problems to aid understanding. Readership: This book is aimed at 3rd year undergraduate and postgraduate students on hydrology/hydrometeorology, environmental science and geography courses. Professionals in environmental protection agencies and consultancies will also find the book of great interest. It contains a balance of both the physics and mathematics which underpin such courses and activities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic costs of frosts in agriculture and horticulture in many parts of the world can be very significant. Reports in the media include accounts on how frosts have devastated coffee crops in Brazil or in Papua New Guinea, and how frosts have seriously damaged the Florida citrus industry. Frost may cause losses in current harvests or a decline in future yields through more permanent damage to trees and bushes. Damaging frosts may occur as infrequent, short-term events with sub-zero temperatures or with unusually severe winter temperatures which extend over long periods. In this book we have aimed at providing a comprehensive review of recent advances in the area of frost research. The stimulus for writing this book has come from the recognition that there is a shortage of recent texts which deal exclusively with the bioclimatology of frost. Bioclimatology deals with the relations between climate and life and the present text is particularly concerned with the effects of low temperatures on plants. Our purpose has been to assist researchers, engineers, extension officers and students in understanding the physical aspects of frost occurrence and frost distribution as well as the biological and phenological aspects of frost damage and to provide an overview of direct and indirect methods of frost pro tection and prevention.
