Book excerpt: It is essential to capture carbon dioxide from flue gas because it is considered one of the main causes of global warming. Several materials and various methods have been reported for the CO2 capturing including adsorption onto zeolites, porous membranes, and absorption in amine solutions. All such methods require high energy input and high cost. New classes of porous materials called Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) exhibit excellent performance in capturing carbon dioxide from a gas mixture. In the course of the current research, a novel MOF synthesis method using combined microwave and ultrasound, and microwave only was introduced and successfully applied to synthesize two different MOFs named IRMOF-1 and CPM-5. The scope of the research focuses on: 1) synthesis of two different MOFs (e.g. IRMOF-1 and CPM-5) using innovative non-traditional methods including microwave and ultrasound irradiation, and employing the optimization of three synthes is conditions: synthesis temperature, time and solvent ratio, 2) testing the MOFs for carbon dioxide adsorption to obtain the adsorption properties such as adsorption equilibrium isotherm, CO2 diffusivity coefficient, adsorption kinetics and isosteric heat of adsorption, 3) testing of the best MOF for CO2 adsorption using fixed bed adsorption micro-reactor column configuration at different experimental conditions such as adsorption temperature, feed concentration and feed flowrate, 4) modeling of the breakthrough curve using COMSOL simulation and comparing it with the experimental breakthrough curves. The microwave irradiations drastically reduce the synthesis time of CPM-5 samples from 5 days using a traditional method (e.g. conventional oven) to 10 min. The outcome of the research indicated that the IRMOF-1 and CPM-5 samples synthesized using the novel synthesis methods exhibit unique properties compared to traditional synthesis method. The improved properties of the final product such as: lower particle size and narrower size distribution, more constructed crystallites, high surface area, high CO2 adsorption isotherm capacity (e.g. 2.3 mmol CO2/ g), high selectivity factor of CO2 over N2 (e.g 16.1 at 298 K), low isosteric heat of adsorption, and a high CO2 dynamic adsorption capacity (e.g. 11.9 wt. % at 298 K), were noted. As a result the microwave synthesized CPM-5 samples can be considered as an attractive adsorbent for the separation of CO2 from flue gas.

MOFs have been proposed in use for gas adsorption, purification, and separation applications. This work combines MOFs with 3D printing technologies, in which 3D printed plastics serve as a mechanical structural support for MOFs powder, in order to realize a component design for gas adsorption. The objective of the thesis is to understand the gas adsorption behavior of MIL-101 (Cr) MOF coated on 3D printed PETG, a glycol modified version of polyethylene terephthalate, through a combined experimental and modeling study. The specific goals are: (1) synthesis of MIL-101 (Cr) MOFs; (2) nitrogen gas adsorption measurements and microstructure and phase characterization of the MOFs; (3) design and 3D printing of porous PETG substrate structures; (4) deposition of MOFs coating on the PETG substrates; and (5) Monte Carlo (MC) modeling of sorption isotherms of nitrogen and carbon dioxide in the MOFs. The results show that pure MIL-101 (Cr) MOFs were successfully synthesized, as confirmed by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and X-ray diffraction (XRD), which are consistent with literature data. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area measurement shows that the MOFs samples have a high cover- age of nitrogen. The specific surface area of a typical MIL-101 (Cr) MOFs sample is 2716.83 m2/g. MIL-101 (Cr) also shows good uptake at low pressures in experimental tests for nitrogen adsorption. For the PETG substrate, disk-shape plastic samples with a controlled pore morphology were designed and fabricated using the fused deposition modeling (FDM) process. MOFs were coated on the PETG substrates using a layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly approach, up to 30 layers. The MOFs coating layer thicknesses increase with the number of deposition layers. The computational model illustrates that the MOFs show increased outputs in adsorption of nitrogen as pressure increases, similar to the trend observed in the adsorption experiment. The model also shows promising results for carbon dioxide uptake at low pressures, and hence the developed MOFs based components would serve as a viable candidate in gas adsorption applications.

Metal-organic frameworks are permanently porous, crystalline solid phase materials composed of organic molecules connected together by metal-based nodes into ordered structures. Generally exhibiting very high gravimetric surface areas, the pore surfaces of metal-organic frameworks can be rationally designed to allow for highly specific interactions between the adsorbent and guest species. Through chemical modifications of the pore surfaces, metal-organic frameworks were designed to adsorb CO2 over other small molecules. Chapter 1 begins with background information on carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) and the role it can potentially play in slowing anthropogenic CO2 emissions. An analysis of desirable metal-organic frameworks properties is presented along with a summary of the most significant work in the field of developing new metal-organic frameworks as CO2 adsorbents. Finally, a summary of amine-functionalized solid adsorbents that have directly influenced the synthesis and characterization methods reported in this investigation is presented. Chapter 2 reports the synthesis and characterization of the metal-organic framework mmen-CuBTTri. At the time it was first synthesized, mmen-CuBTTri exhibited some of the best CO2 adsorption properties of any metal-organic framework, including the highest selectivity for CO2 over N2 yet measured. The sorbent was the first to demonstrate that aliphatic amines could significantly improve the CO2 adsorption properties of metal-organic frameworks with open metal sites. Furthermore, despite an enthalpy of CO2 adsorption of nearly -100 kJ/mol at zero coverage, it was shown that the sorbent could be effectively cycled with modest temperature swings. Chapter 3 reports the original synthesis and characterization of mmen-Mg2(dobpdc). Utilizing the same diamine as the sorbent in Chapter 2, it was demonstrated that the nature of metal-organic framework support, and not just the amine functional groups, affects the CO2 adsorption properties. In this case, the high density of amines within the pores resulted in a material that could effectively remove CO2 at very low concentrations; it was the first metal-organic framework studied for its ability to remove CO2 directly from air. Furthermore, mmen-Mg2(dobpdc) was the first amine-functionalized solid sorbent to exhibit steps in its pure component CO2 isotherm. Finally, it was shown that the adsorption properties of the material, especially the regeneration energy, make it competitive with aqueous amine solutions. Chapter 4 builds upon the work of Chapter 3. The adsorption mechanism of mmen-Mg2(dobpdc), which was studied by infrared spectroscopy, solid state NMR spectroscopy, and in situ powder X-ray diffraction measurements was revealed to be a previously unprecedented cooperative insertion mechanism. The origin of the unusual isotherm steps was revealed to be a phase transition of the amines attached to the pore surface. In Chapter 4, a method of controlling the position of isotherm steps is described. Finally, the superior carbon capture characteristics of phase change adsorbents are enumerated. Chapter 5 is a departure from the previous chapters and describes a simple and convenient method of utilizing a commercially available thermogravimetric analyzer to assess the porosity and activation conditions of metal-organic frameworks. The importance of identifying proper activation is discussed and a suggested protocol for researchers to use is given. Lastly, the ability of the method to improve the reported gas adsorption properties of the metal-organic framework Mn-BTT is reported.
