Book excerpt: O presente trabalho teve como objetivos principais, o estudo das caracteristicas morfologicas, fisicas, quimicas, mineralogicas e geomorficas de dois solos sob cerrado do municipio de Rio Paranaiba - MG. O estudo dos perfis de solos foi efetuado em trincheiras com 2 metros de profundidade, utilizando-se descricoes de acordo com metodos comumente utilizados. A paisagem da regiao e formada por extenso chapadao praticamente plano onde ocorre a unidade Latossolo vermelho-amarelo e em cujas encostas, entre as bacias Parana-Sao Francisco e o planalto, se distribui o Latossolo Roxo. As analises quimicas evidenciaram que o Latossolo Vermelho Amarelo apresenta fertilidade natural extremamente baixa e os elevados teores de gibsita atestam o avancado estagio de intemperismo em que se encontra este solo. Ja o Latossolo Roxo, em virtude do relevo ingreme, dificultando a mecanizacao, podera ser utilizado mais racionalmente com pastagens e culturas perenes, desde que se tome os devidos cuidados para reduzir o processo erosivo. Os solos foram classificados conforme o SOIL SURVEY STAFF (67), respectivamente como Typic Acrustox e, de acordo com os criterios propostos por Bennema e Camargo (11) para a Classificacao Brasileira, como Latossolo Vermelho Amarelo distrofico textura muito argilosa relevo plano substrato sedimentos argilosos e Latossolo Roxo Distrofico textura argilosa relevo forte ondulado substrato tufos vulvanicos.
