This book was released on 1991-01-15 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report focuses on preventing potentially disabling conditions from developing into disabilities and on minimizing the effects of such conditions on a person's productivity and quality of life. It describes disability as a social and public health issue and not just a physical condition. The report begins with an executive summary, an introduction which discusses prevention issues in general and defines concepts, and a list of 27 recommendations. Subsequent chapters discuss: (1) the magnitude and dimensions of disability in the United States; (2) a conceptual approach to disability prevention and use of the tools and principles of epidemiology; (3) major areas of disability (developmental disabilities, injury-related disabilities, chronic diseases and aging, and secondary conditions associated with primary disabling conditions); (4) government and private sector programs concerned with disability prevention; and (5) conclusions and recommendations in the areas of a national program for the prevention of disability, surveillance, research, access to care and preventive services, and professional and public education. Appendixes contain a paper by Saad Z. Nagi titled "Disability Concepts Revisited: Implications for Prevention"; a statement of one committee member dissenting from this majority report of the Committee on a National Agenda for the Prevention of Disabilities; a response to the dissenting statement by committee members; and committee biographies. The analysis is based on a broad range of measurements, including anthropometric dimensions, somatotype photographs, hand-wrist radiographs in young athletes, and menarche questionnaires for females. The second volume uses the methods of kinanthropometry to provide an integrated study of the physique and performance of Olympic athletes. All accumulated data, derived from measurements of athletes at Olympic Games from 1928 to 1976, have been collected, reviewed and analysed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Randomized controlled trials are one of the most powerful and revolutionary tools of research. This book is a convenient and accessible description of the underlying principles and practice of randomized controlled trials and their role in clinical decision-making. Structured in a jargon-free question-and-answer format, each chapter provides concise and understandable information on a different aspect of randomized controlled trials, from the basics of trial design and terminology to the interpretation of results and their use in driving evidence-based medicine. The authors end each chapter with their musings, going beyond the evidence or citations, and sometimes even beyond orthodox correctness to share their thoughts and concerns about different aspects of randomized controlled trials, and their role within the health system. Updated to include insights from the last decade, this second edition challenges over-reliance on randomized controlled trials by debating their strengths and limitations and discussing their optimal use in modern healthcare. It also includes a new and increasingly relevant chapter on the ethics of randomized trials. World renowned writers and thinkers Drs Jadad and Enkin bring you this invaluable book for busy health professionals who wish to understand the theory of randomized controlled trials and their influence on clinical, research or policy decisions.

Book excerpt: Nurse-led intervention research is a core component of the global initiative to improve quality of care. Though research in this area has already contributed much to the advancement of patient care, future strides depend on the dissemination of practical, how-to instruction on this important area of research. Design, Evaluation, and Translation of Nursing Interventions aids in this endeavour by presenting both general approaches and specific methods for developing nursing interventions. Logically organized to facilitate ease of use, the book is divided into four sections. The introduction provides a firm grounding in intervention science by situating it within the broader topics of evidence-based practice, client-centred care, and quality of care. Section Two describes each step of intervention design, including correct identification of the health issue or problem, clarification of the elements comprising an intervention, and application of theory. Section Three is centred on implementation, highlighting such topics as development of the intervention manual, training interventionists, and intervention fidelity. The book concludes with methods to evaluate interventions enacted and suggestions for their translation into practice. Design, Evaluation, and Translation of Nursing Interventions distills the authors’ years of expertise in intervention research into comprehensive, easy-to-follow chapters. It is a must-have resource for students, researchers and healthcare professionals wishing to impact the future of patient care.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “ I applaud [this] book for providing a much needed overview of the entire “behavioral intervention pipeline.” It fills a unique niche in its coverage of key theoretical and methodological aspects as well as its case examples and professional development considerations, which makes the content accessible and practical for a broad audience.” -Marcia Ory, PhD From the Foreword This unique text provides comprehensive coverage of one of the most neglected—yet vitally important--areas of public health research: developing, evaluating, and implementing novel behavioral interventions in service and practice settings. Written for Masters- and Doctoral-level courses as well as novice and expert researchers in this area, the book examines the most critical issues surrounding this form of research in order to maximize the ability of intervention researchers to successfully implement current and future evidence-based protocols in practice settings. Expert contributors embrace key challenges —the complexities of health care delivery, disease management and prevention, rising costs, and changing population demographics—in shaping the push toward advancing more efficient and effective behavioral interventions and methodologies. Tackling numerous topics that have been neglected in traditional randomized trial handbooks, methodology texts, and books on dissemination and implementation science, the book addresses: ways to develop and advance an intervention, emerging hybrid trial designs - theories and new models for integrating behavioral interventions with implementation science - - recruitment and retention strategies for inclusion of diverse samples - research designs for different stages of intervention development - treatment fidelity models and measures - novel measurement and analytic strategies - cost analyses - selection of control groups - use of mixed methodology - ethics and informed consent - technology-based intervention approaches – professional considerations. Abundant case examples from successful behavioral intervention trials—both national and international--illustrate key concepts. Key Features: Includes examples of a wide range of interventions including individuals across the life span and of diverse communities and health systems Replete with case examples from successful behavioral intervention trials Presents the challenges of and strategies for advancing behavioral interventions for immediate use in practice Written by world-recognized expert authors and contributors Provides novel coverage of a great variety of important—but previously neglected--topics

Book excerpt: Accelerated population ageing, long a significant issue for developed countries, is now becoming important in the developing world too. Population ageing is one of the great achievements of the past century - although it brings its own social, economic, political and cultural challenges. The quality of life of older people is strongly conditioned by their capacity to manage opportunities and risks. Social protection, both formal and informal, can be critical. This book examines the links between well-being and development, drawing on examples from low, middle and high-income countries. It examines ageing in a number of very different development contexts - Argentina, Brazil, China, Ghana, Japan, Mexico, Thailand, Ukraine, UK and USA. It highlights the complexity of relationships between development and the way later life is experienced, identifies key priorities for policy-makers, and maps out an urgent research agenda.

At poor levels, it is associated with such health outcomes as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Physical fitness testing in American youth was established on a large scale in the 1950s with an early focus on performance-related fitness that gradually gave way to an emphasis on health-related fitness. Using appropriately selected measures to collected fitness data in youth will advance our understanding of how fitness among youth translates into better health. In Fitness Measures and Health Outcomes in Youth, the IOM assesses the relationship between youth fitness test items and health outcomes, recommends the best fitness test items, provides guidance for interpreting fitness scores, and provides an agenda for needed research. The report concludes that selected cardiorespiratory endurance, musculoskeletal fitness, and body composition measures should be in fitness surveys and in schools. Collecting fitness data nationally and in schools helps with setting and achieving fitness goals and priorities for public health at an individual and national level.
