This book was released on 2001 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: The general concern about the state of the environment has focused the attention of many countries in recent years on the need to remediate areas affected by radioactive residues. The present assessment was requested by the Government of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, with the purpose of obtaining an independent view of the radiological situation on Bikini Atoll, the site of nuclear weapons testing in the period 1946 -1958. In particular, questions were posed about whether the former inhabitants should be permitted to return to their homes and about the nature and extent of any remedial actions which might be necessary. This report presents the results and conclusions of a meeting of international experts convened by the IAEA and chaired by K. Lokan, Australia, in December 1995 to review the available information on the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October 1982, a small international symposium was held at the Gesellschaft fUr Strahlen- und Umweltforschung mbH (GSF) in Munich as a satellite meeting of the IX International Conference on Analytical Cytology. The symposium focussed on cytometric approaches to biological dosimetry, and was, to the best of our knowledge, the first meeting on this subject ever held. There was strong encouragement from the 75 attendees and from others to publish a proceedings of the symposium. Hence this book, containing 30 of the 36 presentations, has been assembled. Dosimetry, the accurate and systematic determination of doses, usually refers to grams of substance administered or rads of ionization or some such measure of exposure of a patient, a victim or an experimental system. The term also can be used to describe the quantity of an ultimate, active agent as delivered to the appropriate target material within a biological system. Thus, for mutagens, one can speak of DNA dosimetry, meaning the number of adducts produced in the DNA of target cells such as bone-mar row stem cells or spermatogonia.

Book excerpt: This Safety Guide provides recommendations on meeting the requirements established in IAEA Safety Standards Series No. SSR-6 (Rev. 1), Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material, 2018 Edition, for a radiation protection programme for the transport of radioactive material. The objectives of a radiation protection programme for the transport of radioactive material are to provide for adequate consideration of radiation protection measures in transport; to ensure that the system of radiological protection is adequately applied; to enhance a safety culture in the transport of radioactive material; and to provide practical measures to meet these objectives. The recommendations provided in this Safety Guide are applicable to the transport of radioactive material by all modes on land, water, or in the air, including transport that is incidental to the use of the radioactive material. The intended audience for this Safety Guide includes competent authorities, consignors, carriers, consignees, and operators of ports (e.g. harbours, seaports and airports). It will also be of interest to the employees of public authorities (customs authorities, harbour authorities, port authorities) concerning activities associated with the transport of radioactive material that involve radiation exposure.

Book excerpt: The International Chernobyl Project was launched in 1990 at the request of the Government of the USSR to assess the environmental and health situation in the areas of the Soviet Union contaminated by the Chernobyl accident and to evaluate the measures taken by the authorities to safeguard the health of the population still living in these areas. Some 200 scientists from 25 countries and 7 international and regional organizations participated in this Project. An International Advisory Committee was set up to oversee the Project and approve its conclusions and recommendations. Almost 50 missions to the USSR were carried out in order to obtain the best available information and to make an independent assessment of the situation. The results of the International Chernobyl Project are presented in two main documents: The full Technical Report, which contains, in addition to the conclusions and recommendations of the Project, all the relevant methodologies and the data upon which they are based, and the Overview, which gives a summary of the methodologies presented in the Technical Report together with the conclusions and recommendations. While the Technical Report is intended for the scientific community, the Overview is intended for decision makers, concerned groups and the informed public. Three maps showing the distribution of surface ground contamination by plutonium, strontium and caesium released by the Chernobyl accident and deposited in the Byelorussian SSR, the Russian SFSR and the Ukraine are attached to the Overview. A third document, containing the proceedings of an International Conference which took place in Vienna in May 1991, presents the Project results to the scientific community and to the media. The Proceedings should be read in conjunction with either the Overview or the Technical Report.
