Book excerpt: 'When I play with my cat, who knows if I am not a pastime to her more than she is to me?' - Michel de Montaigne. Why do we live with pets? Is there something more to our relationship with them than simply companionship? What is it we look for in our pets and what does this say about us as human beings? In this fascinating book, Erica Fudge explores the nature of this most complex of relationships and the difficulties of knowing what it is that one is living with when one chooses to share a home with an animal. Fudge argues that our capacity for compassion and ability to live alongside others is evident in our relationships with our pets, those paradoxical creatures who give us a sense of comfort and security while simultaneously troubling the categories human and animal. For what is a pet if it isn't a fully-fledged member of the human family? This book proposes that by crossing over these boundaries pets help construct who it is we think we are. Drawing on the works of modern writers, such as J. M. Coetzee, Elizabeth Marshall Thomas and Jacques Derrida, Fudge shows how pets have been used to think with and to undermine our easy conceptions of human, animal and home. Indeed, "Pets" shows our obsession with domestic animals that reveals many of the paradoxes, contra - dictions and ambiguities of life. Living with pets provides thought-provoking perspectives on our notions of possession and mastery, mutuality and cohabitation, love and dominance. We might think of pets as simply happy, loved additions to human homes but as this captivating book reveals perhaps it is the pets that make the home and without pets perhaps we might not be the humans we think we are. For anyone who has ever wondered, like Montaigne, what their cat is thinking, it will be illuminating reading.

Book excerpt: Marion Nestle, acclaimed author of Food Politics, now tells the gripping story of how, in early 2007, a few telephone calls about sick cats set off the largest recall of consumer products in U.S. history and an international crisis over the safety of imported goods ranging from food to toothpaste, tires, and toys. Nestle follows the trail of tainted pet food ingredients back to their source in China and along the supply chain to their introduction into feed for pigs, chickens, and fish in the United States, Canada, and other countries throughout the world. What begins as a problem "merely" for cats and dogs soon becomes an issue of tremendous concern to everyone. Nestle uncovers unexpected connections among the food supplies for pets, farm animals, and people and identifies glaring gaps in the global oversight of food safety.

This charming tale promises to whisk young readers away to a fantasy realm where pets live happily ever after, and adventures abound. But how? Imagine a place where your beloved pets, even those who have crossed the rainbow bridge, can frolic and play once more. That’s exactly what Didi, a clever engineer, envisioned when she created Pet Paradise. Using a powerful computer program, Didi brings pets back to life, giving them a second chance at happiness. “What if you could see your pets again, even after they die?” she muses. "If you could hug them, play with them, and love them forever, what would you be willing to give to make that happen?" Didi’s creation, an AI supercomputer named Groccolli, is tasked with maintaining this paradise. Groccolli’s mission is simple yet profound: to bring back as many pets as possible and ensure they live happily and healthily. From monarch butterflies to praying mantises, Groccolli’s efforts are nothing short of miraculous. “Every pet deserves a second chance at happiness,” he declares. “And I’m here to make that happen.” But Pet Paradise isn’t without its challenges. The pets must navigate pesky mosquitoes, pollution, and even the fear of death. Didi and Groccolli are determined to create a true paradise, where no pet ever gets sick, grows old, or dies. “We want a place of happiness, peace, and love for everyone, forever,” Didi explains. Their ultimate goal is The Real Pet Paradise, a utopia where every pet and animal can live in perfect harmony. Pet Paradise is more than just a story; it’s a celebration of love, friendship, and the unbreakable bond between humans and their pets. Ahuruonye’s witty and poetic prose brings this surreal world to life, making it a joy for young readers. The book is filled with memorable quotes and highlights, such as: “In Pet Paradise, every wag of a tail and every purr is a symphony of joy.” “Happiness is a warm, furry friend by your side.” “Love knows no bounds, not even the boundaries of life and death.” Parents, this book is a must-have for your child’s bookshelf. It’s educational, entertaining, and beautifully written. It encourages children to cherish their pets, to dream big, and to believe in the power of love and imagination. Plus, it’s packed with humour and wit, making it a delightful read for both kids and adults. So why wait? Dive into the pages of Pet Paradise and unleash your child’s imagination. This is a book that promises to leave them smiling, laughing, and longing for more; especially if they had or have pets. Get your copy today and embark on an unforgettable journey to a place where every pet’s dream comes true!

Book excerpt: Although scholars in the disciplines of law, psychology, philosophy, and sociology have published a considerable number of prescriptive, normative, and theoretical studies of animals in society, Pet Politics presents the first study of the development of companion animal or pet law and policy in Canada and the United States by political scientists. The authors examine how people and governments classify three species of pets or companion animals-cats, dogs, and horses-for various degrees of legal protection. They then detail how interest groups shape the agenda for companion animal legislation and regulation, and the legislative and administrative formulation of anticruelty, kennel licensing, horse slaughter, feral and roaming cat, and breed ban policies. Finally, they examine the enforcement of these laws and policies by agencies and the courts. Using an eclectic mix of original empirical data, original case studies, and interviews-and relying on general theories and research about the policy process and the sociopolitical function of legality-the authors illustrate that pet policy is a unique field of political struggle, a conflict that originates from differing perspectives about whether pets are property or autonomous beings, and clashing norms about the care of animals. The result of the political struggle, the authors argue, is difficulty in the enactment of policies and especially in the implementation and enforcement of laws that might improve the welfare of companion animals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the publisher of Pipette Magazine, discover a natural wine-soaked memoir about finding your passion—and falling in love. It was Rachel Signer's dream to be that girl: the one smoking hand-rolled cigarettes out the windows of her 19th-century Parisian studio apartment, wearing second-hand Isabel Marant jeans and sipping a glass of Beaujolais redolent of crushed roses with a touch of horse mane. Instead she was an under-appreciated freelance journalist and waitress in New York City, frustrated at always being broke and completely miserable in love. When she tastes her first pétillant-naturel (pét-nat for short), a type of natural wine made with no additives or chemicals, it sets her on a journey of self-discovery, both deeply personal and professional, that leads her to Paris, Italy, Spain, Georgia, and finally deep into the wilds of South Australia and which forces her, in the face of her "Wildman," to ask herself the hard question: can she really handle the unconventional life she claims she wants? Have you ever been sidetracked by something that turned into a career path? Did you ever think you were looking for a certain kind of romantic partner, but fell in love with someone wild, passionate and with a completely different life? For Signer, the discovery of natural wine became an introduction to a larger ethos and philosophy that she had long craved: one rooted in egalitarianism, diversity, organics, environmental concerns, and ancient traditions. In You Had Me at Pét-Nat, as Signer begins to truly understand these revolutionary wine producers upending the industry, their deep commitment to making their wine with integrity and with as little intervention as possible, she is smacked with the realization that unless she faces, head-on, her own issues with commitment, she will not be able to live a life that is as freewheeling, unpredictable, and singular as the wine she loves.
