Book Synopsis Captain Pamphile by : Alexandre Dumas
Download or read book Captain Pamphile written by Alexandre Dumas and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2022-10-14 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Captain Pamphile of the title is one of Dumas’ most intriguing creations. An anti-hero, the Captain is a rogue and a swindler who decides to exploit the demand for exotic animals that was prevalent in the early 19th century. However, Pamphile’s methods are unconventional, to say the least. If you like your adventures on the high seas served up with betrayal, intrigue, mutiny, and a liberal dose of sardonic humour, then this is the book for you. A satirical tale with a twist, ‘Captain Pamphile’ is the perfect read for fans of seafaring adventures. Alexandre Dumas (1802 – 1870) was one of the most popular French authors and playwrights of the 19th Century. After the death of his father, Dumas travelled to Paris where he eventually decided to work in the theatre. He first came to public attention at the age of 27 with his first play, ‘King Henry III and his Courts.’ After a succession of successful stage plays, Dumas turned his hand to writing novels. Many of these were serialised in newspapers, such as ‘La Comtesse de Salisbury; Édouard III,’ and ‘Le Capitaine Paul.’ Many of Dumas’ later works have been hailed as timeless classics and adapted for television and the silver screen, such as ‘The Three Musketeers’, starring ‘Lord of the Rings’ ́ Orlando Bloom, and ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’, starring ‘Superman’ star, Henry Cavill.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Adventures of Captain Pamphile, and Delaporte's Little Presents Alexandre Dumas had learned the great art of exciting no jealousy by his success. Simple and friendly with great writers, familiar with the less known, he gained the confidence of the one class and aroused the enthusiasm of the other, so that both those whose career was beginning and those who had succeeded were on his side. His exquisite courtesy, while it stifled envy in the germ, fascinated young writers, who were delighted to be met with such friendliness by the lion of the day. 'The Adventures of Captain Pamphile and Delaporte's Little Presents' is a must read for fans of the author who brought us 'The Three Musketeers', 'The Count of Monte Cristo', and many more. Alexandre Dumas was born in Villers-Cotterets, France in 1802. His parents were poor, but their heritage and good reputation - Alexandre's father had been a general in Napoleon's army - provided Alexandre with opportunities for good employment. In 1822, Dumas moved to Paris to work for future king Louis Philippe I in the Palais Royal. It was here that he began to write for magazines and the theatre. Dumas made a lot of money from his writing, but he was almost constantly penniless as a result of his extravagant lifestyle and love of women."
Download or read book Sex Dolls at Sea written by Bo Ruberg and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-06-14 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigating and reimagining the origin story of the sex doll through the tale of the sailor’s dames de voyage. The sex doll and its high-tech counterpart the sex robot have gone mainstream, as both the object of consumer desire and the subject of academic study. But sex dolls, and sexual technology in general, are nothing new. Sex dolls have been around for centuries. In Sex Dolls at Sea, Bo Ruberg explores the origin story of the sex doll, investigating its cultural implications and considering who has been marginalized and who has been privileged in the narrative. Ruberg examines the generally accepted story that the first sex dolls were dames de voyage, rudimentary figures made of cloth and leather scraps by European sailors on long, lonely ocean voyages in centuries past. In search of supporting evidence for the lonesome sailor sex doll theory, Ruberg uncovers the real history of the sex doll. The earliest commercial sex dolls were not the dames de voyage but the femmes en caoutchouc: “women” made of inflatable vulcanized rubber, beginning in the late nineteenth century. Interrogating the sailor sex doll origin story, Ruberg finds beneath the surface a web of issues relating to gender, sexuality, race, and colonialism. What has been lost in the history of the sex doll and other sex tech, Ruberg tells us, are the stories of the sex workers, women, queer people, and people of color whose lives have been bound up with these technologies.
