Book excerpt: In the late 14th century, the German swordsman Johannes Liechtenauer developed and codified a system of armed combat with sword, spear, and dagger that spread through the Holy Roman Empire and dominated German martial arts for nearly 300 years. By the end of the 15th century, a fellowship of swordsmen in Frankfurt known as "the Brotherhood of Saint Mark," or Marxbruder, had been granted an imperial charter to train and test swordmasters. Peter Falkner was a long-time member and sometime captain of this famed fencing guild, and it was during this tenure that he set about creating an illustrated fight book of his own; colorful, painted figures and short captions depict combat with a wide variety of weapons: the longsword, dagger, staff, poleaxe, halberd, dueling shield and mounted combat. Where his work excels, however, is in its extensive treatment of the falchion-like messer, and the unique variations of core techniques of the Liechtenauer canon. In this first, printed edition of Falkner's work, German martial arts teacher and scholar Christian Tobler includes a full translation, transcription, and analysis, combined with a photographic reproduction of the original manuscript. The end result is a lovingly rendered, English translation of a 500 year old picture-book that shows an adaptation of the Liechtenauer tradition, by a known master of its most prestigious school, as taught over a century after its foundation.

When Tom Folger's father is lost during a whaling expedition, the young Nantucketer is forced to put aside thoughts of his printer's apprenticeship to support his mother. In keeping with the family's sea-faring tradition, he joins a whaler's crew and sets out on his first cruise, but an encounter with a bull sperm whale changes everything. Not only does Tom find himself promoted third mate, a position not without its difficulties, but it leads to a chance encounter with the enigmatic Captain Paul.An ex-slaver and merchantman, the fugitive Scottish buccaneer's path becomes entwined with that of Tom. With conflict brewing the two join the fledgling Continental Navy.Through trials and tribulations, politicking and treachery, Tom sails with Captain Paul from Nassau to France and on into the home waters of the feared Royal Navy.As the Revolutionary War rages on, a legend will be born. With echoes of Moby Dick and Hornblower, Captain Paul is an enthralling fictional biography of John Paul Jones that vividly brings to life the brotherhood of the sea. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WELCOME TO A SWEET DELIGHT Heris Serrano was an officer from a family with a long tradition of distinguished service in the Fleet. So when a treacherous superior set her up and forced her to resign her commission, she thought life had lost all meaning. But she still needed to pay the bills¾which was how she ended up as "Captain" of a rich old lady's interstellar luxury yacht, the Sweet Delight, which just added insult to injury ... or so she thought. But Cecelia, the rich and exceedingly well-born old lady, turned out to have more brains than most admirals Heris had known, and when the pair ran into a secret society whose idea of "fun" was hunting and killing people, they quickly put a stop to that blood sport. But that was only the beginning. The heir to the throne himself was involved with the society, and Heris soon uncovered a plot against the royal family and a conspiracy within the Fleet itself. And whoever controlled the Fleet controlled the galaxy . . . Before it was all over, Heris would be given a chance to rejoin her beloved space navy ... if she could manage to stop an invading armada with only one destroyer, two PT boats, one ore scow, and¾oh, yes¾an old lady's space yacht Sweet Delight. Impossible Not for Heris Serrano. At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management). "... dazzling ... Moon's mastery of contemporary science fiction is evident in every line. The characters spring to life on the page ... the action never flags... riveting..." ¾Booklist "One of the best-known and most acclaimed writers of SF adventure...." ¾Publishers Weekly "... excellent world building and appealing characters...." ¾Science Fiction Age
