Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative interdisciplinary study compares the uses of painting in literary texts and films. In developing a framework of four types of ekphrasis, the author argues for the expansion of the concept of ekphrasis by demonstrating its applicability as interpretive tool to films about the visual arts and artists. Analyzing selected works of art by Goya, Rembrandt, and Vermeer and their ekphrastic treatment in various texts and films, this book examines how the medium of ekphrasis affects the representation of the visual arts in order to show what the differences imply about issues such as gender roles and the function of art for the construction of a personal or social identity. Because of its highly cross-disciplinary nature, this book is of interest not only to scholars of literature and aesthetics, but also for scholars of film studies. By providing an innovative approach to discussing non-documentary films about artists, the author shows that ekphrasis is a useful tool for exploring both aesthetic concerns and ideological issues in film. This study also addresses art historians as it deals with the reception of major artists in European literature and film throughout the 20th century.

Book excerpt: Murder on the Eiffel Tower is painstakingly researched, an effortless evocation of the glorious City of Light, and an exciting opening to a promising series featuring Victor Legris. The brand-new, shiny Eiffel Tower is the pride and glory of the 1889 World Exposition. But one sunny afternoon, as visitors are crowding the viewing platforms, a woman collapses and dies on this great Paris landmark. Can a bee sting really be the cause of death? Or is there a more sinister explanation? Enter young bookseller Victor Legris. Present on the tower at the time of the incident, and appalled by the media coverage of the occurrence, he is determined to find out what actually happened. In this dazzling evocation of late nineteenth-century Paris, we follow Victor as his investigation takes him all over the city and he suspects an ever-changing list of possible perpetrators. Could mysterious Kenji Mori, his surrogate father and business partner at the bookstore Legris operates, be involved in the crime? Why are beautiful Russian illustrator Tasha and her colleagues at the newly launched sensationalist newspaper Passepartout always up-to-date in their reporting? And what will Legris do when the deaths begin to multiply and he is caught in a race against time? Winner of the prestigious Michel Lebrun French Thriller Prize

Book excerpt: Francisco Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828) created magnificent paintings, tapestry designs, prints, and drawings over the course of his long and productive career. Women frequently appeared as the subjects of Goya's works, from his brilliantly painted cartoons for the Royal Tapestry Factory to his stunning portraits of some of the most powerful women in Madrid. This groundbreaking book is the first to examine the representations of women within Goya's multifaceted art, and in so doing, it sheds new light on the evolution of his artistic creativity as well as on the roles assumed by women in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Spain. Many of Goya's most famous works are featured and explicated in this beautifully designed and produced book. The artist's famous tapestry cartoons are included, along with the tapestries woven after them for the royal palaces of the Prado and the Escorial. Goya's infamous Naked Maja and Clothed Maja are also highlighted, with a discussion on whether these works were painted at the same time and how they might have originally hung in relation to one another. Focus is also placed on Goya's more experimental prints and drawings, in which the artist depicted women alternatively as targets of satire, of sympathy, or of admiration. Essays by eminent authorities provide a historical and cultural context for Goya's work, including a discussion on the significance of fashion and dress during the period. The resultant volume is surely to be treasured by all who admire Goya's art and by those who are interested in women's issues of his time.

Book excerpt: The full, ancient text: Historia Regum Britanniae.Historia regum Britanniae (or The History of the Kings of Britain) is a supposedly historical account written by Geoffrey of Monmouth in 1136. Though much of the text is largely considered fiction, it does pull from several ancient texts and true historical events/personas.It is notable for being the first, major blockbuster-like success of the Arthurian legends, bringing the character to widespread popularity for the first time. Many of our modern myths (and ancient ones) have drawn from this text.

Book excerpt: Goya ranks as one of the finest exponents of intaglio engraving in the history of art. His consummate mastery of the techniques of etching and aquatint, and of lithography - the latter a recent invention when he turned to it - was placed at the service of imagery that provides an intimate record of the artist's response to the times in which he lived, as full of conflict and upheaval as our own. Alongside single prints of sacred and profane subjects, it is above all on four major series of etchings that Goya's reputation as a print-maker rests. The biting social criticism of Los caprichos, the savage indictment of war and violence in Los desastres de la guerra, the intense drama of the bullfight in La tauromaquia and the elusive symbolism of Los disparates speak to us with undiminished power across two centuries. For the most part, Goya's prints, which provided unequivocal evidence of his Enlightenment sympathies, were denied the wide circulation he intended for them. The artist's privileged position as Court Painter did not place him outside the orbit of the repressive regime in Spain before, during and after the Peninsular war with Napoleonic France; indeed, the Desastres series was not published until almost forty years after his death. This volume, previously published in Spanish by the Fundacion Juan March in Madrid, reproduces all known etchings and lithographs by Goya, including some rare impressions rejected by the artist. Following a general appraisal, the authors provide introductory texts to each chapter and commentaries on all the prints. A note on print-making techniques used by Goya, an extensive bibliography and a detailed chronology of Goya's life and works and ofcontemporary political and cultural events complete a book that will delight both the general art lover and the connoisseur.

Book excerpt: Like no other medium in which he worked, Picasso's lithography only began to realize its full potential in the decades after 1945. This new volume presents Picasso's entire lithographic oeuvre, consisting of 855 pieces -- for the first time in full color throughout the book. Assembled over the course of three decades, this collection is unmatched, impossible to be repeated or recreated in the same way. Its uniqueness lies in the rarity of its test and state printings, and its numerous single printings and unpublished sheets. Pablo Picasso: The Lithographs is the first collection of such work to list every printed sheet as an individual work and thus constitutes the most reliable reference work for the artist's lithographic oeuvre. An interview with printer Henri Deschamps offers an immediate, contemporary account of the process of creating the sheets, and Erich Franz's illuminating introduction to Picasso's lithography sharpens the viewer's eyes to the innovative diversity of this master artist whose importance has still yet to be completely accounted for.

Book excerpt: Structuralism and the Logic of Dissent is a fascinating and lucid exploration of the seminal writings of four eminent French structuralists that sheds new light on influential theoretical texts. Eve Tavor Bannet discusses the work of Barthes, Derrida, Foucault, and Lacan as coherent philosophical fictions, showing their contradictory political, social, and pedagogical implications and their complex historicity.
