Book Synopsis The Costs and Benefits of Price Stability by : Martin Feldstein
Download or read book The Costs and Benefits of Price Stability written by Martin Feldstein and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the Federal Reserve and central banks worldwide have enjoyed remarkable success in their battle against inflation. The challenge now confronting the Fed and its counterparts is how to proceed in this newly benign economic environment: Should monetary policy seek to maintain a rate of low-level inflation or eliminate inflation altogether in an effort to attain full price stability? In a seminal article published in 1997, Martin Feldstein developed a framework for calculating the gains in economic welfare that might result from a move from a low level of inflation to full price stability. The present volume extends that analysis, focusing on the likely costs and benefits of achieving price stability not only in the United States, but in Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom as well. The results show that even small changes in already low inflation rates can have a substantial impact on the economic performance of different countries, and that variations in national tax rules can affect the level of gain from disinflation.

Book excerpt: "From adjusted gross income to zoning and property taxes, the second edition of The Encyclopedia of Taxation and Tax Policy offers the best and most complete guide to taxes and tax-related issues. More than 150 tax practitioners and administrators, policymakers, and academics have contributed. The result is a unique and authoritative reference that examines virtually all tax instruments used by governments (individual income, corporate income, sales and value-added, property, estate and gift, franchise, poll, and many variants of these taxes), as well as characteristics of a good tax system, budgetary issues, and many current federal, state, local, and international tax policy issues. The new edition has been completely revised, with 40 new topics and 200 articles reflecting six years of legislative changes. Each essay provides the generalist with a quick and reliable introduction to many topics but also gives tax specialists the benefit of other experts' best thinking, in a manner that makes the complex understandable. Reference lists point the reader to additional sources of information for each topic. The first edition of The Encyclopedia of Taxation and Tax Policy was selected as an Outstanding Academic Book of the Year (1999) by Choice magazine."--Publisher's website.

Book Synopsis The Taxation of Income from Business and Capital in Colombia by : Charles E. McLure
Download or read book The Taxation of Income from Business and Capital in Colombia written by Charles E. McLure and published by Fiscal Reform in the Developin. This book was released on 1990 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over the years Colombian tax officials have received the benefit of first-class advice of leading foreign scholars. In return, these scholars--and indeed everyone concerned with development policy--have gained a great deal both from the unusual willingness of Colombians to consider new ideas in detail and then, after full public discussion, drawing on the work of these experts to design a 'made-in-Colombia' solution. "[The book's] most important contribution, however, is undoubtedly with respect to consumption taxes. No one, anywhere, has thought through with such care just how the so-called 'simplified alternative tax' (essentially a direct personal consumption tax combined with a cash-flow corporate tax) might work in the real world. Since such taxes are increasingly being considered--if not adopted--all over the world, in developing and developed countries alike, for this reason alone this book should be high on the reading list of all those concerned with the design and implementation of efficient and equitable direct tax systems."--From the Foreword by Richard M. Bird

Download or read book Macroeconomics written by David Miles and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-04-09 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macroeconomics: Understanding the Global Economy, 3rd Edition is to help students – and indeed anyone – understand contemporary and past economic events that shape the world we live in, and at a sophisticated level. But it does so without focusing on mathematical techniques and models for their own sake. Theory is taken seriously – so much so that the authors go to pains to understand the key aspects of theories in a way that will not put people off before they see how theories are useful to analyse issues. The authors believe that theories are essential to better understand the world, thus the book includes a wealth of historic and current episodes and data to both see how theories can help interpret the world and also to judge their validity. Economies today are very inter-connected; what happens in China matters pretty much everywhere; and what happens in one (even small) country in the euro zone has implications for the whole euro area and beyond, consequently Macroeconomics, 3rd Edition adopts a very international focus.

Book Synopsis A New View of Economic Growth by : Maurice FitzGerald Scott
Download or read book A New View of Economic Growth written by Maurice FitzGerald Scott and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a major new theory of economic growth. Orthodox theories explain both the level and growth of output by three main variables: employment, the capital stock, and technical progress. The new theory does not attempt to explain the level of output, only its change over a givenperiod, and so is more historical. The capital stock is not of central interest, and there is no separate rate of technical progress. The two main explanatory variables are the growth of employment and the rate of investment. As well as demolishing existing orthodox theories, the book demonstrates that the new theory can be used to explain why growth rates differ between different countries (mainly the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom) and periods, and why the shares of profits and wages differ. Verdoon'sand Fabricant's Laws relating to productivity growth in different industries; taxation; optimum growth; and the productivity slow-down after 1973 are also discussed.
