Book Synopsis The Contemporary Arab Contribution to World Culture by : Magdi Youssef
Download or read book The Contemporary Arab Contribution to World Culture written by Magdi Youssef and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprises a selection of papers delivered at a research meeting of the International Association of Intercultural Studies (IAIS) which took place in Paris in March, 2009. As suggested by its title, it addresses prejudices prevailing not only in Western societies, but also in marginalized ones, especially among their Western-oriented intelligentsia. It is often claimed that there exists no ‘serious’ contribution to world culture that is not based on the Western models that prevail worldwide, especially in the aftermath of globalization. This book challenges the projected image of a dominant West serving as a necessary and indispensable model for a dependent, receptive ‘rest of the world.’ It can be read as a necessary decolonization of today’s human knowledge in all disciplines by taking as an example recent Arab contributions in many areas of human knowledge, from the natural sciences to the political economy or architecture. Other marginalized socio-cultures worldwide, like those of Africa, India, Thailand, Persia, and Ireland, should follow suit in presenting an alternative to the extant globalization of Western norms, by offering a truly equal open exchange of human inventions on a world scale.
Book Synopsis The History of Financial Management and Accounting Practice in the North Borneo 1881-1963 by : Rasid Mail
Download or read book The History of Financial Management and Accounting Practice in the North Borneo 1881-1963 written by Rasid Mail and published by Universiti Malaysia Sabah Press. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discipline of financial management and accounting practices as part of the society’s social structure has evolved rapidly, in line with changing times, environmental pressures, technological developments and the needs of society. From a critical and behavioural perspective, both are neither isolated phenomena nor separated from the overall socioeconomic and political structure of society. In fact, these two disciplines interact with the surrounding conditions, either socioeconomic and political changes of the society or technological changes, in symbiotic and mutually influential forms. An understanding of how financial management disciplines and accounting practices change and evolve is necessary to enable both of their current practices to be understood for their origins and their relevance to the past. This need can only be met through a historical approach by examining past events and evidence, based on clues in the form of archive documents, cross-sectional studies on comparative research, reasoning processes based on theoretical formulas and the like. An explanation of related past phenomena will enable current practices of financial management and accounting practices to be understood and appreciated more. History can explain the origins of current phenomena, especially to the new generation who need to understand their identity and appreciate the contributions of past society. This book offers an explanation of the past regarding financial management practices and accounting practices in North Borneo (now known as the state of Sabah). As a branch of knowledge and practice of society which is more inclined to analyze the current situation and explore the future, through economic models, mathematical formulas and statistical forecasts, historical perspectives on financial management practices and accounting practices represent an outlook that is very rarely explored by researchers of accounting practices, nor is it a popular choice among historical writers. This book, which chose North Borneo during the colonial era (1881 – 1963) as the study background, is very useful as reference material by researchers and students as well as reading material to the public, especially those interested in understanding the development of past financial management practices and accounting practices, and their association to current practices. The coverage of this book is very comprehensive, covering 83 years period and presents reviews of the socioeconomic and political development of North Borneo related to the development of financial management practices and accounting practices.

Book Synopsis Third-Party Litigation Finance by : Anthony J. Sebok
Download or read book Third-Party Litigation Finance written by Anthony J. Sebok and published by Aspen Publishing. This book was released on 2024-01-31 with total page 864 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buy a new version of this textbook and receive access to the Connected eBook on Casebook Connect, including lifetime access to the online ebook with highlight, annotation, and search capabilities. Access also includes an outline tool and other helpful resources. Connected eBooks provide what you need most to be successful in your law school classes. Litigation finance sits at the intersection of many well-known subjects within the law school curriculum: contracts, torts, civil procedure, evidence, professional responsibility, insurance, and capital markets. There are no professionally produced materials for a professor who wants to teach an entire semester-long course on litigation finance. This casebook is an attempt to fill that gap. Its ten chapters provide a foundation for a two- or three-credit class, although many of the chapters could also be used individually as supplemental material for a free-standing unit on litigation finance in another course, such as torts, civil procedure, or the law of lawyering. Notwithstanding the fact that the law of litigation finance is rapidly developing as investment in litigation and legal services grows, the cases and other materials contained in this book will remain relevant and useful to anyone trying to teach students about this important new body of law. Benefits for instructors and students: Careful selection of the leading cases in the United States about the development and current law of assignment and litigation finance. Diverse selection of secondary source material, including major law review articles, as well as reports and advocacy materials from supporters and critics of litigation finance. Notes following the readings help the student progress through the materials in a logical and coherent manner.

Book Synopsis The Economics of Financial Turbulence by : Bill Lucarelli
Download or read book The Economics of Financial Turbulence written by Bill Lucarelli and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This challenging book examines the origins and dynamics of financialeconomic crises. Its wide theoretical scope incorporates the theories of Marx, Keynes and various other Post Keynesian scholars of endogenous money, and provides a grand synthesis of these theoretical lineages, as well as a powerful critique of prevailing neoclassical/monetarist theories of money. Bill Lucarelli provides detailed historical analyses of the causes of the current international financial crisis, and offers alternative heterodox theories with more coherent and rigorous theoretical frameworks than existing economic orthodoxies. He illustrates that the very assumptions of neoclassical theory - informed by the efficient markets hypothesis - tend to rule out the very possibility of endogenous financial crises. Consequently, he argues, the endogenous causes of these crises are either ignored or simply treated as random, extraneous historical events. In stark contrast to these neoclassical/monetarist views, this book seeks to explain the recurrence of these financial crises as a result of the inner workings of the capitalist system.
Book Synopsis The Crisis of Neoliberalism by : Gérard Duménil
Download or read book The Crisis of Neoliberalism written by Gérard Duménil and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-18 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines “the great contraction” of 2007–2010 within the context of the neoliberal globalization that began in the early 1980s. This new phase of capitalism greatly enriched the top 5 percent of Americans, including capitalists and financial managers, but at a significant cost to the country as a whole. Declining domestic investment in manufacturing, unsustainable household debt, rising dependence on imports and financing, and the growth of a fragile and unwieldy global financial structure threaten the strength of the dollar. Unless these trends are reversed, the authors predict, the U.S. economy will face sharp decline.Summarizing a large amount of troubling data, the authors show that manufacturing has declined from 40 percent of GDP to under 10 percent in thirty years. Since consumption drives the American economy and since manufactured goods comprise the largest share of consumer purchases, clearly we will not be able to sustain the accumulating trade deficits.Rather than blame individuals, such as Greenspan or Bernanke, the authors focus on larger forces. Repairing the breach in our economy will require limits on free trade and the free international movement of capital; policies aimed at improving education, research, and infrastructure; reindustrialization; and the taxation of higher incomes.
