Book excerpt: The fluid flow through porous media requires understanding the behavior of the capillary properties and pore-size characteristics of the porous medium. The similarity experiment is conducted to study the capillary pressure and saturation relationship using the continuous liquid intrusion and liquid drainage in the Glass bead porous medium and the capillary behavior is compared to the Gas diffusion layer porous medium used in Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell. While the liquid-air capillary pressure curves in the glass bead porous medium are found to depend on the glass bead diameter, surface wettability and pore-size characteristics, they depend on the GDL sample thickness and Teflon content in the GDL. The main objective is to understand the capillary behavior in the porous medium by controlling the surface wettability, pore-size characteristics and glass bead diameter of the porous medium. A capillary pressure - liquid saturation relation is derived based on the experimental data at room temperature and the relative permeability - saturation correlation for the gas diffusion layers under the given conditions was obtained using the Wyllie model. Finally the empirical fit of the capillary pressure-saturation correlations is validated for the GDL porous media and the optimum conditions for the fuel cell operation is evaluated for the efficient fuel cell operation.

Book excerpt: "A capillary pressure curves provides important information about the porous system such as porosity, breakthrough pressure, fluid-solid wettability and capillary hysteresis. The measurement of capillary pressure curves is one of the most commonly adopted methods of measuring wettability in a porous system. However, to date these measurements are done only at room temperature because of the limitations of utilising existing equipment at higher temperatures. The capillary behaviour of liquid in porous system can be a different when subjected to harsh condition such as high temperature and pressure. An experimental setup has been designed and developed to measure air-water capillary pressure curves for gas diffusion layers (GDLs) used in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells at elevated temperatures. Experiments were conducted at various temperatures in the direction of increasing and decreasing temperatures for Toray 120 and Toray090 with varying PTFE loadings. Notable shifts in the capillary behavior were seen and in some cases the shifts were of the same size as PTFE addition. In untreated samples the results suggest that GDL wettability changes with temperature once the temperature dependence of the surface tension has been accounted for. In treated samples, however, the wettability remains more or less constant with temperature. This behavior is in agreement with the temperature dependent values of water contact angle on PTFE and graphite. Observed shift with temperature for treated samples are more or less reversible during decreasing temperatur" --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CLIFFORD K. HOAND STEPHEN W. WEBB Sandia National Laboratories, P. O. Box 5800, Albuquerque, NM 87185, USA Gas and vapor transport in porous media occur in a number of important applications includingdryingofindustrialandfoodproducts,oilandgasexploration,environm- tal remediation of contaminated sites, and carbon sequestration. Understanding the fundamental mechanisms and processes of gas and vapor transport in porous media allows models to be used to evaluate and optimize the performance and design of these systems. In this book, gas and vapor are distinguished by their available states at stan- ? dard temperature and pressure (20 C, 101 kPa). If the gas-phase constituent can also exist as a liquid phase at standard temperature and pressure (e. g. , water, ethanol, toluene, trichlorothylene), it is considered a vapor. If the gas-phase constituent is non-condensable at standard temperature and pressure (e. g. , oxygen, carbon di- ide, helium, hydrogen, propane), it is considered a gas. The distinction is important because different processes affect the transport and behavior of gases and vapors in porous media. For example, mechanisms specific to vapors include vapor-pressure lowering and enhanced vapor diffusion, which are caused by the presence of a g- phase constituent interacting with its liquid phase in an unsaturated porous media. In addition, the “heat-pipe” exploits isothermal latent heat exchange during evaporation and condensation to effectively transfer heat in designed and natural systems.

Book excerpt: An automated system was developed for a rapid measurement of detailed hysteretic capillary pressure-saturation (Pc-S) relationships, including primary drainage, main imbibition, and scanning loops. The method makes use of a slow-dynamic (pseudo-static) measurement method which is able to duplicate static results while expanding the pressure range over which high permeability capillary barriers can be applied, and increasing the quantity of hysteretic data that can be collected. The method is demonstrated for two sands and three silts for capillary pressures as high as 1000 cm water (98 kPa). For the experiments shown, primary drainage and main imbibition loops were completed within approximately 6.5 h for all materials, with full runs, including multiple scanning curves, completed in less than 20 h. A model for selection of pressure rates needed to duplicate static results is presented and is found to produce results consistent with empirically-determined rates. The model also predicts the effects of system resistance on dynamic response and is found to be in good agreement with experimental results, particularly for slower rates approaching those needed for pseudo-static conditions.

Book excerpt: Flow and trapping processes of immiscible fluids in porous materials are regularly encountered in a wide range of applications including soil science, oil and gas recovery, geologic sequestration of CO2, and food processing. Such media are characterized by the existence of pore-scale interfaces which are strongly interrelated with the various phenomena and processes associated with these systems. In this dissertation, we develop and present a comprehensive understanding of several of these interrelationships through robust and cohesive experimental and computational research work. We first develop image analysis platforms for in-situ characterization of capillary pressure and wettability using x-ray computed tomography images of saturated porous media. These platforms incorporate practical high-performance computing and image analysis techniques to enhance their efficacy when applied to large-sized micro-CT images of extremely complex porous media. After a rigorous validation process, we use these platforms to analyze pore-scale fluid occupancy maps acquired during a wide range of multiphase core flooding experiments including complex processes such as steady-state two- and three-phase flow tests and various wettability and stress conditions. Our investigations show that a strong correspondence exists between the micro- (image-based) and macro-scale two-phase capillary pressure functions. However, the intermittent nature of the pore-scale displacement events contributes to the discrepancy between the multi-scale behavior. Similarly, during three-phase flow, the local capillary pressures corresponding to the invading phase comply with the macroscopic flow ratios. Nonetheless, more intricate pore-scale interactions such as hyperactive trapping and double displacement events further impact the local capillary pressure changes. Furthermore, capillary pressure gradients across the porous media are incorporated in the three-phase relative permeability measurements. In-situ capillary pressure measurements are also efficiently used to characterize the hydro-mechanical behavior of porous media under various wettability conditions. We find that wettability plays a crucial role in the interplay between the fluids' volume-pressure functions and the effective stress on sandpack samples. In particular, capillary pressure reductions and increases are observed and associated with interfaces being displaced or hinged in place in response to compression processes under water- and mixed-wet conditions, respectively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A general and introductory survey of foams, emulsions and cellular materials. Foams and emulsions are illustrations of some fundamental concepts in statistical thermodynamics, rheology, elasticity and the physics and chemistry of divided media and interfaces. They also give rise to some of the most beautiful geometrical shapes and tilings, ordered or disordered. The chapters are grouped into sections having fairly loose boundaries. Each chapter is intelligible alone, but cross referencing means that the few concepts that may not be familiar to the reader can be found in other chapters in the book. Audience: Research students, researchers and teachers in physics, physical chemistry, materials science, mechanical engineering and geometry.
