Download or read book Training for Work in the Informal Sector written by International Labour Office and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has become increasingly clear in the light of recession and economic adjustment that large numbers of those who enter the labour market of developing countries will not find wage-employment in the "modern" sector, even if they are educated. As the situation is not expected to improve in the near future, young people will increasingly have to create their own jobs in what has come to be called the informal sector. It is an important issue whether they can be assisted in doing so and, in particular, whether training of one sort or another can help them and those who already work in the inform.
Book Synopsis The World's Scavengers by : Martin Medina
Download or read book The World's Scavengers written by Martin Medina and published by Rowman Altamira. This book was released on 2007-05-03 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medina tells us that up to 2% of the urban population in developing countries survives by salvaging materials from waste for recycling, which represents up to 64 million scavengers in the world today. Despite these numbers, we know little about the impact of scavenging on global capitalism development. The author examines its historical evolution and its linkages with formal and informal sector productive activities in capitalist and non-capitalist societies, in case studies from Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Egypt, the Philippines, and India. His new book radically alters popular perceptions on scavenging, demonstrating that many widely-held beliefs are wrong: scavenging is not primarily the activity of the poor nor is it a strictly marginal activity; the economic impact of scavenging is significant and can increase industrial competitiveness; and scavenging can be compatible with a sustainable waste management system. Scavenging represents an adaptive response to poverty, yet at the same time it can be a resource to cities, whose contributions should be recognized and understood.
Book Synopsis Urban Plots, Organizing Cities by : Claudio Coletta
Download or read book Urban Plots, Organizing Cities written by Claudio Coletta and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-11 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By focusing on the interplay between material, social and narrative dimensions of the city, this book examines urban complexity, namely the dynamic and entangled nature of urban issues, and puts forward a notion of the city as an urban texture. Taking an innovative interdisciplinary approach, it perceives the way cities are organized as a restless stratification of materials, meanings and uses, and deals with the interrelationships between actors, places, administrative rationalities and artefacts. It argues that urban fabric is 'manufactured' in this interplay between imagery and practices (of all the stake-holders, including planners, city managers and city users). Illustrated by in-depth empirical studies from across Europe and Latin America, the book explores material and symbolic aspects of the urban experience. In particular, the contributors focus on the less visible ways of organizing urban spaces, such as those enacted and embodied by local news, artefacts such as signals, maps, regulations, public acts, artistic performances, sensory experience and collective memories. The book offers an articulated discussion on these various means of spatial organisation, thereby providing insights into situations of conflict and proposing innovative ways forward for enhancing urban sociability.
