Book excerpt: During a series of tests to provide operational and technical data for evaluating the capabilities of surface-based air defense systems against attacks by low-altitude high-performance aircraft, the capabilities of ground observers to detect and estimate the range to aircraft flying attack missions against prebriefed ground targets were examined. Observer performance was obtained for three aircraft flying three programmed speeds and two programmed altitudes. Sixteen observers searched a 180 deg sector for each trial, with early warning of an aircraft approach being provided for some trials. Three real time events--time at detection, time when the aircraft was at the estimated inbound range, and time when aircraft was at the estimated outbound range--were recorded for each observer for each trial. Book Synopsis Aircraft Detection, Range Estimation, and Auditory Tracking Tests in a Desert Environment by : Edward W. Frederickson

This book was released on 1967 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detection tests with low-flying jet aircraft were conducted to determine the effect of (a) varying the location of observers from the flight path, (b) using optical aids vs. unaided observation, and (c) varying the amount of temporal early warning. Also tested were man's ability to (a) visually estimate the distance to high-speed jets, (b) track aircraft by ear, and (c) determine the distances at which various aircraft structural features were recognized. When distant terrain masking existed, unaided and optically aided detections occurred at approximately the same time. However, when near terrain masking existed, unaided detections occurred sooner. Using binoculars resulted in earlier recognition of structural features. A change from one minute to five minutes of temporal early warning did not affect detection range. As offset increased from 200 meters to 3,300 meters, detection range increased. The range estimation tests were inconclusive. The results of the auditory tracking tests suggest that it may be possible to extend the capabilities of some fair weather air defense systems to poor visibility conditions. The order in which structural features were recognized was different between fighters and bombers, but there were consistencies within each class of aircraft.

Book Synopsis Studies on Training Ground Observers to Estimate Range to Aerial Targets by : Michael R. McCluskey
Download or read book Studies on Training Ground Observers to Estimate Range to Aerial Targets written by Michael R. McCluskey and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six pilot studies were conducted to determine the effects of training on range estimation performance for aerial targets, and to identify some of the relevant variables. Observers were trained to estimate ranges of 350, 400, 800, 1,500, or 2,500 meters. Several variations of range estimation training methods were studied, including immediate knowledge of results after making an estimation, 'paired associate' presentation of observed aircraft position with actual range information, and the use of an occluding object as a range estimation aid. Two variables that tended to influence performance were aircraft elevation and incoming-outgoing directions of flight. (Author).

This book was released on 1967 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of man's ability to visually detect, recognize, and estimate range to low-altitude military aircraft is described. Twenty-seven Army enlisted men, who were given training and field experience in detecting and recognizing aircraft, served as observers. Observers were randomly assigned to the nine combinations of observer offset from the aircraft flight path (head-on, 650-, and 1,400-meter offset) and use of binoculars (binoculars for detection and recognition, binoculars for recognition, and no binoculars). Jet and propeller aircraft provided the low-altitude targets. Observers were provided early warning in time and aircraft position prior to each trial. Results of the study are presented. (Author).

Book Synopsis Determination of Distance from Ground Observer to Aircraft for Acoustic Tests by : A-21 Aircraft Noise Measurement Aviation Emission Modeling
Download or read book Determination of Distance from Ground Observer to Aircraft for Acoustic Tests written by A-21 Aircraft Noise Measurement Aviation Emission Modeling and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document describes a practical system for a user to determine observer-to-aircraft distances. These observer-to-aircraft distances can be either closest point of approach (CPA) distances during field measurements or overhead distances during acoustic certification tests. The system uses a digital camera to record an image of the subject aircraft. A method of using commercial software to obtain the distance from such an image is presented. Potential issues which may affect accuracy are discussed. This revised version replaces AIR902 issued May 1966. This version discusses the use of digital imaging equipment and software which did not exist when the previous AIR902 was written. This version also contains added information on using the distance determination during acoustic tests. The original version used the phrase Minimum Distance' in the title, but the techniques discussed in this AIR allow users to determine general distances, not just minimums.
