This book was released on 2008-04-25 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you a fan of Black Friday shopping? I'm not, but that didn't stop my wife from taking me with her on a journey with all the pushing, shoving, biting, screaming and kicking of the post-Thanksgiving rush. How about the Missouri State Fair? No time? Too far away? Too hot and humid? We will journey to the fair from the comfort of your home. Take in the sights and sounds of not only attending the fair, but partaking in it. There will be a little of everything: the attack of the giant wienie, sneaky underwear, memories of playing in pig dirt, and racing barrels... or is that barrel racing? We'll roll our trailer... clean over the guard rail, enter our roosters, Cocky-did-a-do-do and Breaking Wind, in the rooster crowing contest, and learn if there is such thing as chicken Viagra. We can go trout fishing at a state park. Who fell in? Do fish like minnows better if they are kept warm in your mouth? One thing is certain, we will have fun.
Book Synopsis Envy Up, Scorn Down by : Susan T. Fiske
Download or read book Envy Up, Scorn Down written by Susan T. Fiske and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 2011-04-21 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An insightful examination of why we compare ourselves to those above and below us. The United States was founded on the principle of equal opportunity for all, and this ethos continues to inform the nation's collective identity. In reality, however, absolute equality is elusive. The gap between rich and poor has widened in recent decades, and the United States has the highest level of economic inequality of any developed country. Social class and other differences in status reverberate throughout American life, and prejudice based on another's perceived status persists among individuals and groups. In Envy Up, Scorn Down, noted social psychologist Susan Fiske examines the psychological underpinnings of interpersonal and intergroup comparisons, exploring why we compare ourselves to those both above and below us and analyzing the social consequences of such comparisons in day-to-day life. What motivates individuals, groups, and cultures to envy the status of some and scorn the status of others? Who experiences envy and scorn most? Envy Up, Scorn Down marshals a wealth of recent psychological studies as well as findings based on years of Fiske's own research to address such questions. She shows that both envy and scorn have distinctive biological, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral characteristics. And though we are all "wired" for comparison, some individuals are more vulnerable to these motives than others. Dominant personalities, for example, express envy toward high-status groups such as the wealthy and well-educated, and insecurity can lead others to scorn those perceived to have lower status, such as women, minorities, or the disabled. Fiske shows that one's race or ethnicity, gender, and education all correlate with perceived status. Regardless of whether one is accorded higher or lower status, however, all groups rank their members, and all societies rank the various groups within them. We rate each group as either friend or foe, able or unable, and accordingly assign them the traits of warmth or competence. The majority of groups in the United States are ranked either warm or competent but not both, with extreme exceptions: the homeless or the very poor are considered neither warm nor competent. Societies across the globe view older people as warm but incompetent. Conversely, the very rich are generally considered cold but highly competent. Envy Up, Scorn Down explores the nuances of status hierarchies and their consequences and shows that such prejudice in its most virulent form dehumanizes and can lead to devastating outcomes—from the scornful neglect of the homeless to the envious anger historically directed at Tutsis in Rwanda or Jews in Europe. Individuals, groups, and even cultures will always make comparisons between and among themselves. Envy Up, Scorn Down is an accessible and insightful examination of drives we all share and the prejudice that can accompany comparison. The book deftly shows that understanding envy and scorn—and seeking to mitigate their effects—can prove invaluable to our lives, our relationships, and our society.
Book Synopsis Why Software Sucks-- and what You Can Do about it by : David S. Platt
Download or read book Why Software Sucks-- and what You Can Do about it written by David S. Platt and published by Addison-Wesley Professional. This book was released on 2007 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I've just finished reading the best computer book [ Why Software Sucks...] since I last re-read one of mine and I wanted to pass along the good word. . . . Put this one on your must-have list if you have software, love software, hate programmers, or even ARE a programmer, because Mr. Platt (who teaches programming) has set out to puncture the bloated egos of all those who think that just because they can write a program, they can make it easy to use. . . . This book is funny, but it is also an important wake-up call for software companies that want to reduce the size of their customer support bills. If you were ever stuck for an answer to the question, 'Why do good programmers make such awful software?' this book holds the answer." -- John McCormick, Locksmith columnist, TechRepublic.com "I must say first, I don't get many computing manuscripts that make me laugh out loud. Between the laughs, Dave Platt delivers some very interesting insight and perspective, all in a lucid and engaging style. I don't get much of that either!" -- Henry Leitner, assistant dean for information technology and senior lecturer on computer science, Harvard University "A riotous book for all of us downtrodden computer users, written in language that we understand." -- Stacy Baratelli, author's barber "David's unique take on the problems that bedevil software creation made me think about the process in new ways. If you care about the quality of the software you create or use, read this book." -- Dave Chappell, principal, Chappell & Associates "I began to read it in my office but stopped before I reached the bottom of the first page. I couldn't keep a grin off my face! I'll enjoy it after I go back home and find a safe place to read." -- Tsukasa Makino, IT manager "David explains, in terms that my mother-in-law can understand, why the software we use today can be so frustrating, even dangerous at times, and gives us some real ideas on what we can do about it." -- Jim Brosseau, Clarrus Consulting Group, Inc. A Book for Anyone Who Uses a Computer Today...and Just Wants to Scream! Today's software sucks. There's no other good way to say it. It's unsafe, allowing criminal programs to creep through the Internet wires into our very bedrooms. It's unreliable, crashing when we need it most, wiping out hours or days of work with no way to get it back. And it's hard to use, requiring large amounts of head-banging to figure out the simplest operations. It's no secret that software sucks. You know that from personal experience, whether you use computers for work or personal tasks. In this book, programming insider David Platt explains why that's the case and, more importantly, why it doesn't have to be that way. And he explains it in plain, jargon-free English that's a joy to read, using real-world examples with which you're already familiar. In the end, he suggests what you, as a typical user, without a technical background, can do about this sad state of our software--how you, as an informed consumer, don't have to take the abuse that bad software dishes out. As you might expect from the book's title, Dave's expose is laced with humor--sometimes outrageous, but always dead on. You'll laugh out loud as you recall incidents with your own software that made you cry. You'll slap your thigh with the same hand that so often pounded your computer desk and wished it was a bad programmer's face. But Dave hasn't written this book just for laughs. He's written it to give long-overdue voice to your own discovery--that software does, indeed, suck, but it shouldn't.

Book excerpt: This is an intercultural narrative in the form of a first person contemporary chronicle between a struggling university instructor and the re-embodied Roman writer Tacitus. The projected series completion is ten books - depending on the life of the author. In other words, the reader will know - literally - when the actual author dies as soon as the last incomplete book appears. The narrator meets a "beggar" at the Hamburg Main railway station on the way to work as a university instructor. The homeless man is a refugee from Roman Cyrenaica who has shamanic qualities. He makes the outrageous claim that he is the ancient writer Tacitus. The autobiographical writer is a New Yorker struggling in his "new home" - modern "Germania." The main character considers his role as father to be his most important mission and role in life. He is convinced that his life should already have ended, if it were not for the existence of his two children. He attempts to start a new life in Europe (Hamburg) against all the odds.
